THE DEFINITIVE THREAD Breaking-Santorum calls news conference for 2:00 Is he dropping?

All unbound, free to vote as they wish on the floor!

I'm not sure that's true - they aren't unbound until he formally RELEASES them, and if you notice, he officially SUSPENDED his campaign, he didn't end it.
I wonder if Huntsman still has his two delegates from when he suspended his campaign...

It's amazing how much more of a doomsday scenario this appears to be to those who haven't been around here as long, as opposed to those who have.

Yeah, a bunch of us were predicting that once the caucus states were over the two establishment side shows would wind down.... but it is what it is. We need to be concerned with TONIGHT's caucus for starters, and move on from there. It is worst case because a ton of Santa/Grinch delegatess are really party tools and will have no shifting of gears to do at all to flow from Santa to Romney. I wonder what the delegates in Iowa are thinking however? The evangelicals who supposedly absolutely didn't want Romney?

We'll see who meant it.

Wonder what Erickson will be saying at redstate?

Not that Santorum endorsing Romney means jack about delegates, but why would it make no sense for Santorum to endorse Romney? He has bashed him in the past, yes, but he also supported individual mandates before he didn't, disliked the Tea Party movement until he didn't, he was for spending before he was ....no he still likes spending. Anyway, he has a history of conveniently flipping. Supporting Romney is kinda the expected move now, right?

Even if it is monumental there is no guarantee that the media will report it anyway.

But if we make the April 15 moneybomb the biggest one of them all, hopefully people still realize that we are still fighting and not giving up and that the anti-Romney candidate is still out there. Show Santorum supporters that we are the next best thing, even though we were the best to begin with.

Huntsman does, but since Huntsman cannot be nominated from the floor, his delegates will become unbound.

Same thing could happen to Newt's delegates if he does not get his 5 states.

Fools abound. the game is NEVER over for RP.......WE are RP and WE will prevail

I agree with you. There are 2 1/2 men who remain standing (Newt being the 1/2). If you look at how big the field was from the start and now it is between Romney and Paul; how in the world could anyone be discouraged?

I think it's great Santorum is out. Through the next states, we have a two man race.

[cheesy] Much like the Austrian School Of Economics, we must focus on the long term and disregard the short term! [/cheesy]

It's my understanding those 2 Huntsman delegates from NH went to Romney.

The In-It-T-Win-It Money Bomb on April 15th now becomes absolutely HUGE to show that Ron Paul Supporters are re-energized and ready to take on Romney.

The 2 Million Dollar Goal must now be just the floor. Spread the word NOW!!!! Ron has a fighting chance IF HE HAS THE RESOURCES TO COMPETE!!!

You can bank on Santorum using his bound delegates to support Romney. UNLESS, they all quit and alternate delegates take over.

Did anyone actually think that Santorum was going to stay in the race along with Newt?

Say what you will, but the Santorum and Gingrich were 'blockers' for Paul. Think about it, the polls had Ron winning IOWA and he almost did...then he comes in second in NH but Huntsman, the moderate, pulls just enough away from Ron...think about it, NH voters went for Huntsman instead of Romney?? They rejected Romney and would have went for Paul in large numbers...then you have Santorum blocking Paul in the mid-west in MN again. Gingrich pulls many a percentage point away from Paul and cumulatively Ron loses a few close races.

Anyway, this is what we really want. Paul v Romney down the stretch. We want a reinvigorated Paul campaign to fight in the remaining states no matter what the odds are. Win or lose. Contest the GOP primary all the way to the convention. Get the message out to as many people as possible. Ron should issue a live statement wishing Rick Santorum well and encourage his voters to stay in the process etc...remind them that they still have a conservative choice. That would be the smart thing to do. He should say something about how family is important and show some class by saying I respect Santorum for putting his family above his campaign etc...remind people that Ron is a family man and a man of faith etc...he should scratch that Texas ad now, take Santorum out of it...you don't hit a man when he is down.

Texas is now in play for Ron as long as it remains proportional.

Most of us were aware that this was going to happen. The campaign was also well aware and is prepared.

Only if he officially drops.

"Suspending" means (I am pretty sure) he can control his 1) money and 2) delegates.

He can't exactly control his delegates, he just keeps those bound to him. To ask them to vote for anyone else, he'd have to release them and then they could vote their conscience. He can't transfer the 'binding quality' of his delegates to someone else. They all will be unbound if he doesn't get nominated for contention at the RNC.

Dr Paul said it's like a track race, you stay the distance because others may stumble. Now Santorum is withdrawing it's only Romney ahead that is left to stumble.
