Seeing so much speculation around the possibility of a Romney / Paul alliance led me into some critical thinking. I'd like to share my thoughts and speculations on whats happening here. Mostly because I think this can spiral out of control in a heartbeat. My biggest fear is that Ron has a surge in the polls and the media uses a "Ron Paul is surging because he's backing Romney, and still not a serious candidate for the Nomination" meme to quell his surge and detour voters to another candidate like they did in the week prior to Iowa.
What we know:
Ron Paul has only attacked Romney in passing or as a package slam against the establishment choices. On many occasion Ron tosses Romney a bone on his work as a business man and Governor. This plays very well into the states rights and the message that states should be granted these kinds of powers so long as no funding or federal intervention is needed in enforcing the policies. Massachusetts health care package or "Romneycare" is often used as a bludgeon against Mitt. Despite the fact that he was exercising the will of his state. The states right's argument is why I believe Dr. Paul gives Mitt a pass on this one.
Romney has never gone after Paul. Point blank Romney needs us. this movement is a political phenomenon considering our candidate and his message. It's more than likely that Romney thinks he can somehow win us over. What I don't understand his how he plans to do that. He has been given many chances and openings on topics like the NDAA and Federal Reserve system. Both topics hold little concern to the republican base, so pursing those Paul votes would have been an easy way to score points with the R3volution and not hurt his primary poling. Yet he declined. I attribute this to his campaigns oversight. More than likely he'll pivot on one or both of the issues for the general if he's the nominee.
Romney thinks Paul isn't a threat. What I think Romney is trying to do is keep Ron right where he is until its too late for Paul to become the anti-Romney. It's possible that Romney isn't part of what we consider to be the evil part of the establishment. He just looks and smells the part of a corrupt politician because he flips and flops for every voting block placed in front of him. It's entirely possible that Romney doesn't believe in a single thing he's talked about this entire election season. And the establishment KNOWS that. And that's why they haven't fallen in "rank and file" behind him. This could possibly also explain why Dr. Paul hasn't gone for Romney's throat "Yet".
What I hope happens: The post 2008 Dow-Jones like spikes continues in the republican field polling. leaving Conservatives voters sea-sick from the front runner roller-coaster, Ron holds onto a strong second place in delegates right up until the convention amassing a good deal of speculation around his roll in the party. But a few weeks before the convention he condemns what the party has became, Drops out and picks up a 3rd Party Americans Elect, libertarian, or other 3rd party ticket. Ron charging into the general with a completely broken and disgusted GOP will pick up disfranchised dem's, a large majority of Indy's and the most important vote left. the "Anti-Obama" vote.
I'll end with this: Ron Paul is not working ANY kind of backroom deal with Romney, its simply just not in either of their interest to attack one another. And its certainly not in Paul's interest to make a deal after decades of fighting against them. While Romney may contemplate giving Ron or Rand something like chairman of the Federal Reserve or Secretary of the Treasury. Romney will inevitably awake to the cold hard hard fact that its...
