WASHINGTON — Some Texas tea partiers are prodding Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Tyler, to challenge Sen. John Cornyn next year.

Gohmert ruled out a run last month, telling the Washington Examiner that “it’s not on my radar” to run against Cornyn, a well-funded incumbent who serves as deputy Senate GOP leader.

But that hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm for a Gohmert bid among some tea partiers. JoAnn Fleming, executive director of Tyler–based Grassroots America We The People, told National Review Online that problems with Cornyn have existed for a while.

“This didn’t just start with the Mike Lee letter, this has been going on for quite some time,” she said. “I’ve had people ask me to ask him.”

Some tea partiers are disappointed that Cornyn withdrew support from Utah Sen. Mike Lee’s demand to shut down the government if the Affordable Care Act receives funding in next month’s budget showdown. Sen. Ted Cruz, the junior senator from Texas, has been beating the drum for that tactic.

Fleming also cited a lack of town hall meetings by Cornyn. On August 17, some tea partiers will represent him with a cardboard cut-out at a mock town hall in Dallas, NRO reported.

Democratic operatives eagerly flagged the story as a sign of internal GOP strife, playfully labeled “GOP TEA PARTY PRIMARY-PALOOZA.”

Cornyn has opposed the Affordable Care Act from the outset. And he is eager to cut funding and eventually repeal it. But he views the Lee-Cruz approach as flawed.

“Even if you were to shut down the government … that mandatory spending will continue,” he told KSEV’s Edd Hendee. “You can’t shut off Obamacare by stopping discretionary spending, which Congress appropriates.”

I think it is highly unlikely an incumbent Congressman would primary an incumbent Senator.

I have friends that know Gohmert personally and tell me he doesn't want to be a senator. That's why he didn't run for the Kay Bailey Hutchison seat last year.

That being said, I think he would be better than Cornyn.

Anyone would be better than Cornyn. That guy has been on the wrong side of just about every crucial vote. An upset in his election would send a statement to the Neocons but we are all tapped out of Liberty Candidates here. Maybe Debra Medina. She can probably pull it off is and get more votes since there would be any other GOP primary candidates.

What do people here think about the "mandatory" vs. "discretionary" spending argument with respect to "defunding" Obamacare?

Medina's already running for something else in 2014. There are a few state legislators that backed Ron, maybe one could enter this race?

She is running for comptroller.

Gohmert is similar to Stockman in a lot of weighs. I'd like to get a provacatour like him in the Senate to rally the base.

If Mitch goes down, Cornyn will likely be second in line.

I think Cornyn is a lot more vulnerable because he's of limited strategic benefit. He doesn't seem to be helping Rand nearly as much as McConnell so Rand (and Cruz) have no reason to back him. FreedomWorks are also already targeting Cornyn with attack ads.

If Gohmert isn't interested, then Stockman would also be a great choice. I still can't see an incumbent Congressman running, though.

State Rep. David Simpson endorsed Ron in 2012. Is he interested in higher office?

Idk. I see Cornyn in a similar position as Mitch, which is trying to stay popular when the young hotshot steals the show. Rand is the most popular pol in Kentucky, and I'm pretty sure Cruz is in Texas. Cornyn has also been dragged to the right this year on many issues. Will be interesting to see.
