Ted Cruz To Make "Major Announcement" At 4 PM

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, and arguably the biggest loser from last night's "Acela Primary", said he will make a major announcement at 4 p.m. on Wednesday but gave no other details.

Based on tangential evidence, however, Cruz will most likely announce that he has picked Carly Fiorina as a vice presidential candidate, even though he no longer has even a mathematical chance of winning enough delegates to be given the nomination.

According to Reuters, speaking to reporters in Indianapolis, Cruz's comments come amid reports that the U.S. senator from Texas is vetting former business executive Carly Fiorina as a possible vice presidential pick.

Earlier, CNN reported that Carly Fiorina and a handful of other possible vice presidents for Ted Cruz are submitting tax returns, said a source familiar with the process Tuesday, another step in the Texas senator's vetting process.

Cruz's campaign has not ruled out naming a vice presidential candidate before he wins the GOP nomination. And Fiorina, a popular Cruz surrogate and a former presidential candidate, quickly emerged this week as someone the Cruz campaign confirmed it was vetting.

Fiorina's team said Monday that she was being vetted and going through the "standard stuff," but a Fiorina spokesman on Tuesday did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Earlier on Tuesday, however, Cruz distanced himself from another possible vice president: Ohio Gov. John Kasich, with whom Cruz has struck an unusual pact in several of the remaining states on the calendar.

"I think that is very, very premature. I respect John Kasich, he is a good and capable man, but I think at this point we've made a decision about allocation of resources," Cruz said to Indiana radio host Tony Katz, pushing back on the idea that the alliance could be a precursor to a ticket. That's an idea that has been pushed by at least one major Cruz donor.

Is it just me, or does announcing your VP running mate the day after being mathematically eliminated smack of desperation?

I really hope it's because he's dropping out and endorsing his best good friend Donald Trump.

There is nothing to gain announcing Carly as VP at this point. Not only would it reek of desperation it would be laughable, in effect making a fool of himself.

Announcing Kasich as a VP pick may gain him a few delegates, some noise in the news cycle, add some weight to a contested convention but not enough to make a difference. Cruz's strategy at this point is not to win but rather be disruptive and cause chaos within the party. Yet ultimately no chance of him winning a contested convention regardless. What would shock the media and be more disruptive for a contested convention is if he picked Rand or Ron as his VP pick which would be doubtful.

He should just drop out at this point. Cruz is going to become even more of a pariah in the Senate should Trump win in November.

LOL - naming a VP who has gotten half-million from the Cruz superPAC and is already under investigation

Better to just call off the deal with Kasich

More than 66,000 Indianans had returned their ballots as of Tuesday, according to the secretary of state,
almost all of whom had voted before the accord.

Kasich was still telling supporters after the deal that they “ought to vote for me,”
as pro-Cruz super PACs rain down anti-Kasich TV ads statewide.
At least some of those spots are presumably spilling into Kasich's home state.

lol there is no way he could name Carly as his VP choice now

Carly isn't even popular, her record is awful and without staged rehearsed debate answers she's useless.

I hope he names Donald Trump as his running mate. I hear that guy has some support among idiots. And Cruz needs all the idiots he can muster.

I'm putting my money that he's announcing Rubio as his running mate. Only thing that makes sense. he needs his delegates and support/endorsement. Rubio is still popular in many republican circles. It's a powerful coalition, if you think about it...

More than desperation -- also self-delusion and arrogance.

Carly is on a flight to Indianapolis...
Hope it is not for sports "fan" advice either - recall the Rose Bowl
Carly, the second wealthiest of candidates in 2016 behind Trump and ahead of old money Democrat Lincoln Chaffee flying coach . . .

Matt Viser, a journalist with The Boston Globe, also reported that Fiorina flew to Indiana yesterday.

Carly Fiorina apparently flew in coach yesterday, en route to Indianapolis... https://twitter.com/BlindGazza/status/724925362627555329 …

It's a good move imo. Hillary is now the presumptive dem nominee, so any decisions by GOP candidates will now be seen in the context of a race against her. Choosing Fiorina as a female running mate before Trump chooses anyone pre-empts him. Kind of blocks him from choosing a woman himself or at least takes away the attention from it. And now if he picks any man as a VP- even Ben Carson (who is laughably inept anyway)- it will gain him nothing against Hillary.

Basically, Cruz is positioning himself as the guy who can beat Hillary, while Trump has never shown any sign whatsoever of being able to do that. Cruz choosing a woman VP is one of the few ways Trump could have earned better support amongst women, where his favorability is abysmal.

I pray to the gods, old and new, that Trump picks Christie as his running mate. That guy is such a cartoon character it will be hours of entertainment.

lol

This doesn't do anything but make Cruz an even worse option for my support, however tactically maybe it's a good idea? I dunno, I don't see it. Clearly it's a choice made in a desire to increase his chances against Hillary.

He gets Trump off the front page as they move into more favorable contests. It may help him in CA as well, I doubt it will help a lot though.

It is going to make him a laughing stock. Fiorina is the last woman you pick if you going for the female votes from the left. Her record at HP will only bring Cruz down and rules out any chance of picking up independents or Democrats.

The MSM and the late night TV is going to have a field day mocking this move. Fiorina and Cruz must be living in some sort of bubble detached from reality.

Alas, I am inclined to agree with your analysis. Announcing Carly as VP is a huge tactical error that won't gain him much and cost him a great deal....

And thus the Cruz campaign ended with a Cruz/Fiorina banner waving in the background...
