The attack on the Blue Line Subway in Chicago, IL was horrible. But knowing how the Cook County judges did next to nothing to stop the suspect from re-offending is worse. How did he get arrested 72 times, but was free to do this again?

Question: when was the last time a white person screamed "Burn, bitch, burn!" at a Black woman and then set her on fire? Or slashed open the throat of a Black girl on a subway and then wandered around mumbling to himself "I got that black girl, I got that black girl"?

There is a dramatic asymmetry in the pattern of interracial violence. It's in a symmetry we're not supposed to notice or comment on.

I think a limit is being pushed, and it's being pushed faster because incidents like these are now frequently caught on video and can be reviewed in horrifying living color.

One way or another, we're headed for a reckoning. I hope it will be a relatively peaceful one, mediated by institutions who have rediscovered that it is their job to keep violent crazies off the streets, even when the crazies happen to be Black.

Because if that doesn't happen, things are going to get really ugly.
