Which is utterly impossible in a continent-spanning nation of a third of a billion people.

At such a scale, democracy (whether "representative", or "direct", or of any other kind) cannot yield anything but a severely dysfunctional, steaming-hot mess.

It must inevitably either break up and fall apart, or become mere window-dressing for some flavor of authoritarian totalism (left-socialism, right-fascism, etc.).
