Will it hold?

A cessation of hostilities has come into effect in Syria, although it is unclear how widely it will be observed.

The Syrian army says it is observing the truce, which began at sunset, but rebel groups have been more guarded.

US Secretary of State John Kerry, who helped broker the deal, warned it could be the last chance for peace in a united Syria.

Humanitarian groups are hoping to make aid deliveries to the worst-hit areas, especially the war-torn city of Aleppo.

Mr Kerry, speaking at the state department in Washington, said early reports indicated "some reduction in violence".

But he said that it was too early to draw a definitive conclusion about how effective the truce would be.

Just after the ceasefire came into effect at sunset on Monday, the Syrian army announced a seven-day "freeze" on military operations.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group reported that calm appeared to be prevailing on most front lines.

The deal was struck on Friday in Geneva after months of talks between Russia and the US. It also requires both sides to allow unhindered access for humanitarian aid to besieged areas.

If the truce holds for seven days, the US and Russia will carry out co-ordinated air strikes on militant groups.

The opposition Free Syrian Army group has said that while it will "co-operate positively" with the ceasefire, it was concerned it would benefit the government.

Another major rebel group, the hardline Islamist Ahrar al-Sham, initially rejected the deal but later appeared to have softened its stance.

Opposition sources quoted by Reuters said a forthcoming statement supporting the cessation "with harsh reservations" would be backed by "the largest groups", including Ahrar al-Sham.

Speaking earlier, President Bashar al-Assad welcomed the deal but said the Syrian state was still "determined to recover every area from the terrorists, and to rebuild".

The cessation of violence is due to be renewed every 48 hours.

The truce followed a weekend of air strikes by government forces on several rebel areas that killed about 100 people.

Russian warplanes were also in action in the provinces of Idlib and Aleppo, say Syrian activists.

Such intensification of violence has occurred before other, aborted, ceasefires in Syria.

"We hope there will be a ceasefire so that civilians can get a break. The shelling goes on night and day, there are targeted killings, besieged cities," said Abu Abdullah, who lives in Aleppo's rebel-held east.

"Civilians have no hope any more."

US walks back Kerry Ceasefire Comments

Spox Kirby called his boss' remarks "incorrect..

Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States and Russia
could permit President Bashar Assad's government
to launch new airstrikes against al-Qaida-linked militants.
The State Department quickly reversed itself.
"Assad is not supposed to be bombing the opposition, because there is a cease-fire,"
Kerry told journalists at the State Department.
"Now he is allowed ... to target Nusra.
But that will be on strikes that are agreed upon with Russia
and the United States in order to go after them."

Later, Kerry's spokesman Kirby said
"a primary purpose of this agreement, from our perspective,
is to prevent the Syrian regime air force from flying or striking in any areas in which the opposition or Nusra are present."

Once U.S.-Russian military cooperation is established, Kirby said,
the focus would be to "coordinate military action between the U.S. and Russia, not for any other party."
("Oh.. of course we didn't mean
what our Secretary of Sate said earlier about Nusra.
Why would we allow Syria's President
to target the self proclaimed and documented terrorists
who have been beheading his own law abiding citizens?"
Don't be silly.")

Over 20 militant groups reject the Syrian ceasefire agreement.

Over 20 militant groups in Syria have rejected
the US-Russian brokered ceasefire that came into effect at dusk on Monday evening.

This announcement was made by the Free Syrian Army
but many of the groups rejecting the ceasefire are not a part of that groups umbrella.

Some of the major factions rejecting the ceasefire include
Failaq Al-Sham , Nour Al-Deen Al-Zanki, Jaish al-Islam, Shamia front, Ajnad al-Sham, Jaish Al-Nasr and Jaish al-Tahrir.

They site that the major reasons for the rejection of the ceasefire
is that it benefits the Syrian Army more so then their own militant factions.
They also state that because it excludes Jabhat Fateh Al-Sham,
formerly known as al-Nusra, from the ceasefire, they cannot agree to those terms.

This announcement follows on from Ahrar al-Sham rejecting the ceasefire on Sunday

Israel attacks Syrian post after stray shell crosses border

Israeli aircraft attacked a Syrian artillery post on Saturday after a stray shell from fighting in Syria's civil war landed inside the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, Israel's military said.

The shell landed just across the border, causing no injuries, and in retaliation the air force targeted "artillery positions of the Syrian regime", the military said.

The Israeli military has responded similarly in the past when mortar fire from Syria's war has landed in the Golan, territory that Israel captured from Syria in a 1967 war.

Syrian state television quoted a Syrian military source as saying the Israeli strike was aimed at helping an offensive by hardline Islamist rebels who had launched an offensive against Syrian troops.

Israel has largely stayed on the sidelines of Syria's civil war, keeping watch over the Golan Heights frontier and occasionally carrying out air strikes or returning mortar fire if there is a specific threat.

Mortar reportedly hits Israel's Golan shortly after Syrian ceasefire starts

Just hours after a nationwide ceasefire went into effect in Syria mortar fire reportedly landed in the Golan Heights, according to residents in the area.

Eli Malka, head of the Golan Regional Council responded to the fire saying, "There is no difference between spillover fire and intentional fire, a bomb is a bomb and poses a risk to human life."

"It is the responsibility of the Minister of Defense and the IDF to convey a clear message to all parties on the other side of the border that all shots fired in the Golan will be treated as firing on Israel and the IDF will respond by destructing the source of the fire," Malka added.

The nationwide ceasefire brokered by the United States and Russia came into effect in Syria on Monday evening, the second attempt this year by Washington and Moscow to halt the five-year-old civil war.

The Syrian army, announced the truce at 7 pm (1600 GMT), the moment it took effect, saying the seven-day "regime of calm" would be applied across Syria. It reserved the right to respond with all forms of firepower to any violation by "armed groups".

Hama, Syria (7:00 A.M.) - The Free Syrian Army (FSA), backed by Jund Al-Aqsa (Al-Qaeda franchise),
launched a new assault in the northern Hama countryside on Tuesday,
targeting the small town of Zour Al-Masalq near Khattab.

According to a field source in northern Hama, the Free Syrian Army's "Jaysh Al-Izza,"
alongside Jund Al-Aqsa, stormed their Syrian Arab Army's defenses at Zour Al-Masalq this morning,
resulting in the second violation of this ceasefire by the rebel forces.

No gains have been reported thus far; however, the jihadist rebels
have forced to the Syrian Arab Army to strengthen their positions all over northern Hama
in anticipation for another attack.

The ceasefire in Hama lasted for a total of 12 hours
before the jihadist rebels broke the agreement by launching their offensive.

Syrian Army sends large convoy of reinforcements to Golan Heights after Israeli attack

SAA.jpg

Golan Heights, Syria (2:15 P.M.) - The Syrian Arab Army's (SAA) High Command
sent a large convoy of reinforcements from Damascus to the Golan Heights this afternoon,
following the Israeli airstrikes that struck their positions last night.

According to a military source in Damascus,
most of the reinforcements were sent to the Golan Heights,
while a small unit was deployed to the northern Dara'a countryside.

Recently, the jihadist rebels attempted to capture the strategic hilltop of Tal Taranjeh
on three different occasions this past weekend;
however, they were repelled after a violent battle with the Syrian Armed Forces.

Most of the groups involved in this jihadist offensive
were supposed to partake in the nationwide ceasefire,
but they later opted out in order to attack the government forces in the Golan Heights.

FSA/Qaeda rebels beg Israel for help against the Syrian army in south Syria

(oops! Rebels posted the video yesterday, was downloaded & translated by Al-masdar :) )

Islamist rebels fighting the Syrian Army in southwestern Syria
are desperately seeking more support from neighboring Israel.

In a phone call made between an Israeli reporter
and a field commander from the Saudi-backed Jaish al-Islam,
the latter confirmed that they are not abiding by the ceasefire with the Syrian government,
offering the reporter – who spoke fluent Arabic– to send him combat footage from the battlefield.
Then...
When asked to address the government of Israel,
the rebel commander demanded a full support of arms, food and all kinds of aid.

"I call on our brothers the Israelis to support the revolution in Syria,
and provide us with everything; weapons, food, aid…anything brother".

"You – Israeli – must attack the Syrian Army and help us defeat this 'infidel regime'," he added.

The video was released yesterday as the hardline militants
launched a wide-scale offensive against government troops in the area,
with the aim to take over the Druze town of Hadar and nearby villages.
The Syrian government has long accused Israel of backing up the militants operating near the borders.

Rebels open fire on the Russian Marines in Aleppo During LIVE Broadcast

Aleppo, Syria (6:50 P.M.) - During a live broadcast with the Russian Defense Ministry on Tuesday,
a Russian Marine and Syrian Arab Army (SAA) commander
came under heavy gunfire along the Castillo Highway in northern Aleppo.

The SAA commander and Russian Marine were speaking to the Defense Ministry
when a rebel group attacked the Russian forces that were positioned along the Castillo Highway.

No one was reportedly hurt; however, this attack raised concerns
about the Syrian opposition's level of commitment to the nationwide cease.

The Castillo Highway is supposed to be a demilitarized zone
that is used to deliver humanitarian aid to the civilians in Aleppo.

According to the Russian military, the so-called moderate rebel forces in Syria
have violated the nationwide ceasefire on 23 occasions

since it was put in place on Monday.
Six people died in Aleppo overnight while 10 others have been wounded.

The Syrian government is abiding by the ceasefire, Russian General Staff official Viktor Poznikhir said.

"Syrian government forces have completely stopped [their] shelling,
except for the areas occupied by ISIS [Islamic State/IS] and Jabhat al-Nusra militants.
Unfortunately that can’t be said about the armed forces of the moderate opposition,
backed by the United States,”
he said.

"We strongly call on all those who have influence on these ceasefire violators,
first and foremost the American side, to finally deal with their clients,"
Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"One should not allow their expected provocative actions
to derail a chance for a turn to a political resolution of the Syrian crisis."

UK HEGEMON: Syrian regime is blocking aid from entering eastern Aleppo, claims UN

(See those BIG Red Crescents? That's right, they're from Turkey the KNOWN proxy supplier. This is BURIED deep w/ only a 'brief mention'.)

The first serious hurdle since a ceasefire in Syria came into effect on Monday
has emerged after the UN said the regime was not giving permission to allow
20 UN aid trucks into eastern Aleppo. (THAT is a COMPLETE LIE.. they're not 'UN Aid Trucks'.)

UN special envoy Staffan de Mistura said the ceasefire agreement signed last week
clearly stated that the government should simply be notified of aid entering the city.

As many as 20 trucks are ready to move and the agreed procedure
is that the government is given details of the content of the trucks.
Syrian government permission or inspections by its officials should not be required.

(Not only is it REQUIRED... you/they were given WARNING by the Syrian FM before they ever arrived.
and now... the 'spin' by the Western propaganda machines begin to spew their poison. )

Damascus rejects humanitarian aid delivery to Aleppo without coordination
SANA also said that the Syrian Foreign Ministry
would not permit the delivery of humanitarian aid, particularly that from Turkey,
to Aleppo without coordination with the Syrian government and the United Nations.

"In reply to reports Turkey is going to dispatch certain items,
allegedly humanitarian assistance, to Aleppo
the Syrian government declares that no deliveries, especially those from Turkey,
will be allowed into Syrian territory without coordination
with the Syrian government and the United Nations," SANA quotes the Foreign Ministry as saying.

Earlier, Reuters said that trucks carrying Turkish humanitarian aid
had crossed into Syria earlier on Tuesday.
Some twenty trucks proceeded to Syria’s northern areas through the checkpoint in the Turkish city of Cilvegozu.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday
declared a humanitarian convoy had been dispatched to Aleppo.

"After the sunset the United Nations and our Red Crescent
will dispatch truckloads of toys, clothing and foods to Aleppo.
The aid will be delivered through agreed humanitarian corridors," he said.

Damascus warns Turkey against flights over Syrian territory

Damascus will respond adequately to the actions of Turkish warplanes over the Syrian territory,
including Turkish air strikes disguised as fight on the Islamic State terrorist group,
SANA news agency said on Tuesday citing a Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman.

"The Syrian government reiterates that any combat flights by Turkish warplanes
over the Syrian territory under a pretext of fighting Islamic State
performed without coordination with the Syrian government and the command of the Russian contingent
are seen as aggression against Syria, a violation of its sovereignty and inviolability of its borders,"
the ministry said in a statement.

Syria will repel any such aggression
and will "respond to it by relevant means to protect its national sovereignty," the ministry stressed.

[Breaking] Russia kills 250 ISIS terrorists near Palmyra

Russian-TU-22M3-longe-range-bomber-696x463.jpg

PALMYRA, SYRIA (5:40 P.M.) - Minutes ago, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported
that on Tuesday, their Air Force killed 250 Islamic State terrorists and destroyed 15 of their vehicles
near the ancient city of Palmyra (Tadmur) in the Homs Governorate.

Pre-Emptive Strike

"Anti-Daesh fight is going on. Yesterday, the Russian Aerospace Forces
conducted airstrikes to the north of Palmyra where a group of Daesh terrorists
were preparing offensive on the city,"

The Islamic State was expected to launch a large-scale offensive at Palmyra in the coming days
after they conducted several small attacks near the International Highway over the last two weeks.

Lt. Gen.Poznikhir did not specify which airport the Russian Air Force used to launch this attack; however,
several reports last week indicated that Moscow and Tehran
are once again negotiating the use of the Hamedan Airbase in western Iran.

managed to capture a large chunk of territory in the southwestern countryside of Deir Ezzor on Wednesday,
forcing the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) to retreat towards the Tayyim Valley.

According to a military source in Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Armed Forces
killed more than 50 Islamic State fighters over the last 24 hours,
while also capturing the imperative hilltop of Tal Sannouf near the 137th Brigade's headquarters.

The Syrian Armed Forces are still advancing at the moment,
capturing most of the checkpoints around the strategic hilltop of Tal Kroum
near the 137th Brigade's headquarters in southwest Deir Ezzor.

Constant Assault

Meanwhile, inside the provincial capital, the Syrian Armed Forces
are attempting to repel the Islamic State's offensive at the Industrial District.
(see map - the ISIS next to 'heart' of city/bank of Euphrates)

So far, the Islamic State forces have been unable to breach

however,
the terrorists continue to send wave-after-wave of militants towards the government's positions.

(It has been a VALIANT white knuckle life & death struggle for month after month after month now. )

Around 100,000 civilians live under ISIS siege in Deir Ezzor's government-held districts.

Meat Hooks

In a sickening new propaganda video, ISIS henchmen slit the throats
of a dozen Syrian men who depicted hanging handcuffed from meat hooks in a slaughter house.
The men, shown in orange jumpsuits, are alleged to be spies from Syria's eastern city of Deir Ezzor.

Kurd vs Kurd (Barzani comes out of the closet.)

Barzani-affiliated forces fighting with Turkey against Syrian Kurds: PYD
KOBANI, Syrian Kurdistan,—
The representative of Syrian pro-Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) in Syrian Kurdistan (northern Syria)
stated that Peshmerga forces affiliated with the Iraqi Kurdistan’s Massoud Barzani
are fighting against the PYD’s military wing, the Kurdish YPG forces
in Jerablus, northern Syria... [and] have sent a group of Peshmerga fighters to Rojava.

The forces are in the ranks of Free Syria Army (FSA)
and are fighting against the PYD, but their language is Kurdish,
adding that
if the issue is confirmed it would be a great treason against Syrian Kurds,

As Cease-Fire Starts, Russia Tells Free Syrian Army to Stop Fighting Kurds

Syrian Kurds have established three autonomous zones, or Cantons of Jazeera, Kobani and Afrin
and a Kurdish government across Syrian Kurdistan (northern Syria) in 2013.
On March 17, 2016 Syria’s Kurds declared a federal region in Syrian Kurdistan.
(... but was anybody LISTENING?? )

Barzani’s KDP which opposite the ruling PYD party doesn’t recognize
the autonomous Kurdish government in Syrian Kurdistan.
Political experts say Massoud Barzani, sees Syrian Kurdistan
as potential political competition.
(This was the US/CIA 'plan' all along... Rojavans were JUST being used. Guaranteed.
Barzani and the mercenary Peshmerga troops have been the hegemon lapdogs...
designed to SPLIT Iraq as well..... Baghdad KNOWS it. Iran KNOWS it. and I know it. :) )

Reinforcements from Sweida pour into the Golan Heights

golan1.jpg

GOLAN HEIGHTS, SYRIA (8:50 P.M.) - A massive convoy of reinforcements from the Al-Sweida Governorate
arrived in the Golan Heights today after the jihadist rebels mobilized more fighters
to launch a 4th offensive.
(Amazing isn't it? The headchoppers keep getting resupplied... I wonder where from? )

According to a Syrian Arab Army (SAA) source,
the government convoy was made up of fighters from:
the National Defense Forces (NDF),
Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP),
Jaysh Al-Muwahiddeen (Druze militia),
and the 5th Armored Division.

Most of the non-army reinforcements are volunteers from the Al-Sweida Governorate
that traveled to the Golan Heights to protect their people from the jihadist rebels.

Similar to Al-Sweida, Jabal Al-Sheikh's (Mount Hermon) population is mostly Syrian Druze,
making their communities very close.

On Day 3, Syrian Truce Still Largely Holds But Aid Trucks Languish At Border

A cessation of hostilities in Syria that took effect Monday appears to be largely holding, though the U.N. says further assurances are required before humanitarian vehicles can deliver aid to those in need.

The U.S. and Russia announced the deal on Friday, as NPR's Alice Fordham reported. If the weeklong cessation holds and aid is distributed to besieged areas, the two powers intend to coordinate strikes against the Islamic State and a rebel group that has had ties to al-Qaida.

The two countries back different parties to the conflict — the U.S. supports opposition fighters, while Russia is allied with the Syrian government.

The United Nations said the fighting has "declined substantially" since the truce went into effect. U.N. Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura told reporters on Tuesday that "calm seems to have prevailed across Hama, Latakia, Aleppo City and rural Aleppo and Idlib — with only some allegations of sporadic and geographically isolated incidents."

In the embattled city of Aleppo, de Mistura said people on the ground say "the situation has 'dramatically improved' with no airstrikes."

However, efforts to bring aid into the country have shown little progress.

"Things are taking longer than we hoped," David Swanson of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs told Reuters. There are at least 20 aid trucks waiting at the country's northern border, he told the wire service, and "disagreements between the warring sides were blocking aid getting into opposition-held eastern Aleppo."

According to the wire service, "the Syrian government has said it will reject any aid deliveries to the city not coordinated through itself and the United Nations, particularly from Turkey, which has backed the rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad."

In his remarks Tuesday, de Mistura said that "regarding humanitarian assistance, there is some homework to be done." He called on the Syrian government to allow "unhindered access" for humanitarian trucks to these hard-to-reach areas, involving only a simple notification to the government with no further searches.

Aleppo

A previous 24hr summary:

SAA started, in accordance with the ceasefire agreement,
the withdrawal from the Castello road
which was then under joint control of the Russian army and Syrian red crescent.
After start of this withdrawal
US supported "rebels" refused to withdraw (actually advanced)
then carried out attack(s) on the road.
(you may have seen the 'live' video during roadside 'conference' w/ Russian MoD)
Current situation now is:

Syrian Army returns to strategic Aleppo highway after rebel attack
ALEPPO, SYRIA (6:30 P.M.) - Minutes ago,
the Syrian Arab Army' (SAA) returned to the strategic Castillo Highway
after the Islamist rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA)
opened fire on the Russian military and Syrian Red Crescent Society.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry,
the Syrian Arab Army returned to the Castillo Highway
after rebel fighters attacked the government controlled portion of the roadway.

The return of the Syrian Arab Army to the Castillo Highway
comes just two hours after they withdrew
as far north as 3.5 km in the Al-Malaah Farms area of northern Aleppo.

A military source in Aleppo city told Al-Masdar News
that the Russian Marines near the Castillo Highway
are furious with the Americans over their failure to control their "moderate" rebels.

Making matters worse,
the people of east Aleppo will go another day without humanitarian aid,
thanks in large part to the Free Syrian Army's refusal
to open their portion of the Castillo Highway.
