The U.N. on Wednesday released stark satellite images showing the most recent destruction of Syria's embattled northern city of Aleppo, which has been pounded by Syrian and Russian airstrikes since the collapse of a U.S.-Russia brokered cease-fire two weeks ago.

The release coincided with a stepped-up offensive by Syrian pro-government forces attacking the city from the south in a bid to penetrate opposition-controlled areas, where the U.N. estimates 275,000 people are trapped in a government siege.

In Geneva, an official with the U.N.'s satellite imagery program said the new pictures from the rebel-held areas in the eastern half of the city show much destruction, presumably caused by airstrikes.

"Since the cease-fire has broken down, you certainly see an awful lot of new damage," said Lars Bromley, a research adviser at UNOSAT.

The images primarily consist of before-and-after pictures from mid to late September showing the destruction of buildings, including houses, after the short-lived cease-fire broke down. Several images are from northern Aleppo neighborhoods, where government forces have advanced against rebel fighters who are battling back.

UN: Satellite images show Aleppo aid attack was airstrike

Analysis of satellite imagery has determined that an attack on an Aleppo aid convoy was an airstrike, the UN said.

The September 19 attack on a Red Crescent convoy of 18 lorries carrying food and medical supplies to Aleppo killed 21 people, including an aid director.

"With our analysis we determined it was an airstrike and I think multiple other sources have said that as well," Lars Bromley, research adviser at UNOSAT, said.

The attack sparked global outrage with some officials saying it could constitute a war crime.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Friday he would establish an internal UN board of inquiry to investigate the attack.

Both the Syrian government and its Russian allies insisted they were not responsible for the attack.

Walking through the home of one of the families, an RT cameraman filmed bits of shrapnel scattered across the terrace and holes in the shutters left by bullets, as Phelan described what she saw as “a deadly place to call home.” The family that occupies the building did not wish to be filmed, but told RT off-camera that, despite the sound of explosions and shooting heard outside, it’s not the worse they have seen over the last six years.

Before the fighting began a little over three weeks ago, this neighborhood was one of the safer parts of Aleppo, and many buildings here were used for housing refugees displaced from the city’s other neighborhoods. Some of them still live here, with no place else to go.

‘I was playing with friends when it hit me’

“We were refugees from the Karm al-Myasser area close to Aleppo airport. We fled from there three-and-a-half years ago,” one of the inhabitants told RT.

The boy Ahmed says that some of his friends left the neighborhood and went to “safer areas like al Furgan and Salah Eddin,” but as Phelan noted, these areas can hardly be considered safe, as Salah Eddin was one of Aleppo’s most gruesome battlegrounds, and is largely in ruins after battles between the Syrian government forces and the rebels.

“Before the situation was better. I used to go to work, but now I can’t. I can only go out for two hours, then I have to come back,” Ahmed complains.

The children hardly ever go outside now that there is fighting here. Five-year-old Safer told Phelan that all she does is tidy the house and play with her friends indoors. But the children – as children do – remain hopeful that one day the sounds of battle will cease and peace will return to their neighborhood.

“First of all, I will clean the street. Then I will call all my friends and tell them to come back so we can play together, play football in the square, it will be amazing,” Ahmed says with tears in his eyes, dreaming of the day the war will be over.

Aid workers in eastern Aleppo
have distributed food rations for 13,945 children under 6 years old,
but a lack of cooking gas makes it difficult to cook what little food remains.

"Reports of civilians rummaging through the rubble of destroyed buildings
to salvage any flammable material that can be used for cooking are common," the report said.

"Poor-quality fuel, which is made from burning plastic, is available in limited amounts."

A litre of diesel fuel costs about 1,300 Syrian pounds or about $2.25,
while a litre of petrol costs 7,000 Syrian pounds or about $13.70.

Psychological health is also suffering....

"Moreover, arguments among spouses have reportedly increased
as many women are blaming their husbands for choosing to stay
while it was possible to leave the city."

Civilians are walking up to 2 km to fetch water,
which is available from boreholes,
and the water situation across the city is "of grave concern".

"Local authorities in charge of the Sulaiman Al-Halabi water station
shut off the electrical power to the station to prevent extensive damage
should hostilities impact the water station directly," it said.
