Swiss vote to ban construction of minarets on mosques

I think my computer is goofy as it takes forever to post what I wrote so I rewrite it. Ha

...

*sigh*

In other news, Sherry Jackson is still in jail, Peter Schiff looks like he needs some help in CT, Copenhagen is just around the corner, Rand is having a money bomb on the 16th, and the Federal Reserve will most likely face an audit whether the bill is passed seperately from the Barney Frank bill or not.

In other words, should we really be wasting 12 bloody pages talking about a ban that Switzerland is imposing when their problems are incredibly minimal to ours!?

MOVING ON.

46% of French would favor banning Mosques. Note that this is much higher than pre-election Swiss polling on the Minarets (people are usually ashamed to admit it) meaning that a vote to ban Mosques in France would most likely pass a popular vote.

I have a feeling some ugly shit is going to down in Europe.

That doesn't mean we should ignore the issues that you brought up Ricky. But it is important to keep an eye on.

That is what I am thinking. Probably go down there before it goes down in the USA. Thay have been practicing for years and are professionals, while we have just had amatuers going at it so far.

UPDATE: Swiss minaret ban reversal vote in pipeline

ZURICH — Swiss liberals are considering a new referendum to overturn the ban on building new minarets in the country, Sunday papers reported, as Libya's Muamar Gaddafi warned the ban played into the hands of terrorists.

Club Helvetique, a group of over 20 Swiss intellectuals, will draw up an action plan to overturn the ban, which has drawn widespread criticism abroad and prompted hundreds of people to take to the streets this weekend in Zurich, Basel and Berne.

"A new initiative is the most democratic way of achieving this," constitutional lawyer Joerg Mueller told Sonntag.

Voters adopted the ban in a referendum a week ago, defying the government and parliament which had warned the right-wing initiative violated the Swiss constitution, freedom of religion and a cherished tradition of tolerance.

Two complaints questioning the legality of ban had already been handed to Switzerland's Federal Court, Sonntag said.

Libya leader Gaddafi said the ban had done a great favor to al Qaeda militants, who would use it to attract recruits in a holy war against Europe, news agency SDA reported.

"The activists are now saying: 'we told you that they are our enemies...join al Qaeda and declare jihad on Europe '."

Politicians from the SVP, Switzerland's biggest party, and the conservative Federal Democratic Union gathered enough signatures to force the referendum on the initiative which opposed the "Islamisation of Switzerland."

Its campaign poster showed the Swiss flag covered in missile-like minarets and the portrait of a woman covered with a black chador and veil associated with strict Islam.

"The Club Helvetique is an association of bad losers," Sonntag reported SVP Vice-President Christoph Blocher as saying.

NO TERRORIST THREAT

So basically Gaddafi is saying "change this law or we'll blow you up" - he's definitely not helping.

A poll in Belgium shows that 57% would vote to ban Mosques and a poll in Spain shows 75% would vote the same way. The only thing keeping the rest of Europe from doing what Switzerland is that they don't have the kind of "direct democracy" that Switzerland does.

We're sitting on a powder keg.

He's telling the truth. It does give motivation to extremists. What's he supposed to do? Lie? It's basically the same as how our bombing of villages gives more motivation and recruiting strength to extremists. A form of blowback, in other words.

Those Europeans are just all about freedom of religion.

Not that I would defend this but some one banning minarets is not the same thing as bombing a village. Guess which one will yield a shit ton more recruits.

Perhaps. Although I would argue that laws discriminating against Christians in Saudi Arabia don't cause Christians to blow themselves up in protest.

Not necessarily saying Ghadaffi is wrong. But if he is right then that isn't good for anybody. Basically the Swiss, with this vote, said "we don't like Muslims and we're going to limit their rights". Now Ghadaffi is saying "you don't like us, well we're going to blow you up then". That isn't going to bring these people any closer together.

Those Europeans are just all about freedom of religion.

They haven't changed much in the past few hundred years have they? There's a reason a few hundred years ago a bunch of dudes got in rickety boats and risked their lives sailing to North America so they could practice their religion in peace.
