I tried that angle, couldn't make it work, looked at pictures of slaughtered and dissected turtles (yuck) and do not believe this is a turtle.

From my research turtles do not have a skin, like depicted in the pic, inside a shell. The shell is part of their "skin".

That said, I'm no expert and I haven't stayed in an HIExpress for months

Whatever it is. I'd bet chopped up it would fit in some RV fridges. Looks like a good protein source after a long day of walking...
