can you admit the possibility that it is a newly discovered species? I have been trying to see a de-shelled turtle as an explanation, but it does not seem so...

It could be, but it's probably not. More likely is that it is an everyday species that has been disfigured somehow, or it is a manipulated photo. There is also the possibility that the thing is a hoax dummy, made of silicone or something similar.

Those are all possibilities. I do wonder why you assume it is a hoax with a common explanation. A comment on the cited article indicates that it was either taken by a regular guy, or... is a conspiracy
