Starting research for buying a new vehicle...

Never buy new.. you loose tons of money/value

Buy with low miles and a warranty.

I have an HHR with 50k.. no issues at all. 30mpg

Don't get an Explorer they are not made to be worked on no grease fittings, if you need to change a ball joint you need to replace the entire upper control arm, things are positioned so that working on it is a PITA, the parts are expensive, ...

My new mechanic suggested a Jeep, for when I go car shopping in Oct. Im also gonna get a subscription to http://www.consumerreports.org and go through it with my mechanic before we go touring the lots.

fuel

I would look for something with alt fuel capability. A diesel that will run on vegetable oil, or a gasoline vehicle that will run on ethanol or propane.

I dunno. My jeep wrangler was nothing but problems. A couple transmissions, rear differential and a couple exhaust manifolds. Oh and an electrical problem that made the speedometer fail. All in the first 100k miles. Luckily I had a 100k extended warranty with a $100 deductible....that cost them. :)
Versus:
I got 350k miles out of both a Ford Bronco and a Ford Explorer. Only problems with those was 1 transmission on each at 200k and they both had been used to do a LOT of towing (RV) and other heavy machinery.

Ya I'm not sold on a Jeep myself but, my one buddy had a grand cherockee that was pretty sweet and he loved it and it was a decent ride.

What year Bronco/Explorer mine was a 2000 got it with 70K on it, at 150k now

I really dont feel like going into detail but Ive easily put 10K into this thing scince I got it, on top of the 10k I had to finance to get it I only owe about 3 k on it now and am eager to ditch it lol

I love the way it drove but ...

Yeah, maybe the cherokees are better and admittedly I was really tough on the wrangler (tj).

Bronco was an '88 and Explorer was a '96.
And the wifey got about 250k out of her '98 ranger before we gave it to a friend a few years ago, its still running last I heard.

Yeah I loved both of mine, but I'm very pleased with my element now as well. It only has 30k miles on it, I can only hope it lasts as long as the fords.

Well those are the same generation maybe I just got a lemon.

Did you ever have to change a starter in one of those, that was such a pain in the ass

I just bought a Tundra and also have a Nissan Armada. Not the greatest on gas. Nissan just averaged 19 mpg on a trip to Pa. Tundra only has city miles so far, around 16 mpg. Love the power in both of them
