SPOILERS -- The Force Awakens Discussion -- SPOILERS

It was a Marvel property that some people knew about prior to the announcement that it was getting made. And we all went "They're going to make a Guardians of the Galaxy movie? Seriously? Well, lots of careers are going to end."
It was a corny 1970s idea that got resurrected seemingly to hitch on to the Marvel gravy train and for no other reason. So I went into it expecting a mind dump.

What I got out of it was something Star Wars got away from. There was a lot of storytelling in that movie that didn't rely on bludgeoning it into your head. Case in point: Nebula gets clocked with a missile. Then she's shown getting up all broken, and her joints put themselves back together and make mechanical noises in the process. Three seconds of film told about ten minutes of story there, and most of the story was told to yourself by your mind.

It didn't do this the entire time but like I said, expectations were in the toilet with that film.

Star Wars has a different problem. It's called The Empire Strikes Back. The series has one favored son, a decathelete chess master neurosurgeon philanthropist that all the rest of the kids are always going to get compared to. And also one older son that's only a golden gloves boxer lawyer. So when dad started pumping out trailer trash in 1983 of course everyone was going to make comparisons.

The series had nowhere to go but up. And given that Lucas had almost nothing to do with the favored son, and E7 was going to have absolutely nothing to do with Lucas, it was all sounding good. They didn't even have to try to bring it back up to the level of watchable. So the fact that I'm only hearing that it was a vast improvement tells me a lot.

Cabal, would you say E7 was better than GotG?

Well, I'm very biased when it comes to Star Wars, and I didn't really enjoy GotG much at all. So yes, I'd say, at least for me, E7 was better. Even I will fully admit that E7 wasn't totally fantastic--it has its problems--but I still enjoyed it regardless of the few issues I had with it.

OK, so a movie buff friend of mine gave me some possible insight into the story. I think it's a pretty good theory considering some of the foreshadowing and plot reveals so far.

Basically, he concurs that Rae is likely a Skywalker. He thinks she's Luke's daughter. He also speculates that perhaps Obi Wan may have had a daughter on Tatooine while watching out for Luke, and that Luke fathered a child with this person.

What's more he thinks Luke trained Rae, which would certainly help explain the mega-Force powers (even moreso than heredity) but I was like, "How? She clearly thought the Force was a myth along with Luke." Then he waved his hand in front of my face and was like "Jedi mind trick". Why didn't I think of that!

We're already told Luke trained others but went into hiding. We know she had some kind of vision/memory when encountering the light saber. We know she displayed wicked Force powers. That Luke wiped her memory and deserted her for her own safety is quite plausible.

Anyway, thought I'd share. I know a lot of people had problems with Rae having such power. Surely the writers are aware we'd notice. So there must be some explanation.
That would be a good explanation. I think it also could be that she was learning by modeling Kylo Ren. Monkey see, monkey do. Also women are supposed to be more intuitive than men ;)

Luke could have wiped out her memory. Also why didn't Leia/Han Solo recognize her? What happened to her mother? Whoever left her there knew she was special. That is all I know for sure. I am a bit concerned that Disney will not treat the story as seriously as George Lucas did. George Lucas was seduced by the power of 3d animation and tried to fit a complex story into 3 films. Disney, I think is more interested in making a buck so I have a bad feeling they might not do the source material justice. I think it would be more powerful of a story if she was Luke's daughter.

Well, the only problem with the theory is the "no boom boom" rule for the Jedi. For Obi Wan, or Luke to have kids both of them will have to have violated the no lovey dovey rule of the Jedi. Stupid rule, imo, but they made a big deal out of it with Annaken.

Some Jedi were allowed to marry in the Old Jedi order and it was allowed in the New Jedi order under Lukes head. ObiWan had love interests in the legends books.
