Split: Questions/concerns about the Kent Snyder chip-in

I gave a donation but it was small compared to what I have given to liberty candidates and other liberty causes...$400k to me sounds like poor Kent got gouged by the hospitals and I didn't give more because I have no proof that this is not a hospital rip-off.

No switch-a-do-dad, it's always been the "official" Memorial "site", at least to me, the medical fund is just a component of the site.

I had mentioned in the notice something like "..help retire his medical bills. To donate visit KentSnyder.com".

Now the notice just mentions the site, but not the request for funds.

Well, whatever else might have once been on that page... the "medical fund" is now virtually the sole content (beyond the handful of blog entries w photos, etc) -- there is no "memorial fund" of any type even listed on the page (at least not anymore).

And at the bottom of the page it makes it quite clear that the only "funds" it is talking about are to defray medical bills, said money going to the vaguely defined "Family of Kent Snyder" for well... here's the paragraph:
All donations will go directly to the family of Kent Snyder for the express purpose of satisfying these medical expenses.
No mention of the purported "scholarship fund" (which I think was at von Mises institute) nor any other form of "memorial."

Well, since in my experience EVERYONE gets "gouged" by the hospitals -- indeed if you've stayed longer than 5 minutes in a modern hospital, you can be certain not only of being "gouged" (via overpricing... $5 per cotton swab, {aka unit code XC-76J-49PKV} etc.) but of substantial FRAUD as well (being billed for procedures, supplies and services that were never rendered, or being billed multiple times {under different codes} for the same procedures, supplies, services, etc.)

Most modern hospitals are pretty shameless in their billing practices -- a problem that can be directly attributed to the introduction of a third party payer.
The only people who can REALLY scrutinize a hospital bill is a fully recovered patient, with a detail-oriented forensic-accountant-type as a loved one sitting alongside -- and when THAT is done, somehow 1/3 to 1/2 of the items on the bill can frequently be made to go "poof" once the light is shined on them properly. (And because the effort involved is SOOO onerous, unless the family's own wealth is at stake... well, most people just practice "Rational-Ignorance" because if an insurance company or MediCare is picking up the tab there is just no ROI for the time/stress needed to scrutinize the bill.)

I never said memorial "fund", you did. I said memorial "site". The two terms are not related at all.

There's a good bit of memorial/memories content. For example:

Memorial Service

PCCA memorial service for Kent Snyder is planned for
3 p.m., July 17th, 2008

at Village Presbyterian Church

There's a good bit of "fund" content too. The site seems to be encompassing both functions.

Hey Mark,

Long time no see. I did PM Jonathan Bydlak with questions about who the family is and if any proof or details about the bills are going to be posted. He has been on the forums at least once since then but no response.

Yesterday morning for the site launch I put up a persistent notice on The Freedom Revolution site about the memorial site mentioning the bills and donations, but I just changed it to only mentioning the memorial site itself so as not to imply that we know what's going on regarding the donation request.

There may indeed be validity in the fact that there isn't anyone to "sue" over the bills. Of course, maybe his family just feel an obligation to pay them, who knows?

It would be nice to have a clearer explanation of the circumstances. I wonder if anyone has written the people who started the site and donation drive for further clarification?

If there is any truth to Tarzan's allegations, I would not expect any answer from them. Someone else also mentioned AIDS in the CFL comments.... I wonder how it will develop...

That is when the Personal Representative of the estate objects to the claim of the creditor hospital. If necessary, it gets set for a hearing and the hospital has to come to court and prove the claim to the judge.

Well, they deleted all the comments and blocked any further on CFL regarding KS. I guess they don't like these questions.

It does seem that they don't want us to ask questions or have them answered. I hate the term sheeple but am starting to think they want us to be the "Ron Paul sheeple". Isn't examination of the facts and unbiased questioning supposed to be a trademark of the R[evol]ution?

It is hard for me to believe that a group as enlighteded and broad-minded as the Ron Paul folks would try to cover up the fact that he died of AIDS. Maybe he was a smoker and/or had weak lungs to begin with. Someone I knew recently died of pneumonia that started out as a case of the flu and went downhill from there. Life is more fragile that we think sometimes.

I have contacted someone who may be able to get further information about this situation. If the intentions of those organizing this are honorable we should have no trouble getting answers once they are aware that people have questions.

Yes.

And I'm getting rather disheartened all-around.

I hope his mother and sisters don't start paying money out of their own personal funds to creditors. They first need to seek legal help in the state in which he was a resident when he died. He was not a pauper and almost certainly had a will and a personal attorney. If I were his folks I would be talking to this person.

Well, I pretty much predicted "blowback" from that the "story" (BECAUSE of it's false assumptions, euphemisms and secrecy) being pushed out about Kent Snyder's health, death, and the resulting large medical debt.

And now it's here (albeit in a small article): OpEdNews

Copied and given wider audience via: Huffington Post

And with the "RP Sheeple/mob" following the expected "lash out without thinking" (or even reading) here: http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=145735

The OpedNews/HuffPo article assumes that the "story" being put out by CFL, etc contains everything necessary to explain the episode -- and in THAT light, the OpEdNews' author's criticisms are entirely valid, as are the statements of several people who posted in response there, including the following:

How can the self-reliance creed gain any traction...

in such a terrible tragedy as this. He [Mr. Snyder] is not a martyr to the Libertarian cause, because their position is that there would be no such outcome under a Libertarian system. He has, however, quite involuntarily, put forth the strongest argument I've ever heard against Libertarianism.
and
A $35 million dollar operation can surely afford a few hundred thousand for the family of the man who made it happen. It wouldn't even contradict their beliefs, as it would be them doing it and not government.

The REAL problem here is that they are critiquing a partially FALSE scenario. False in that many people are ASSUMING he had a wife and kids (this is "implied" in the story of the "family being burdened with debt" that the CFL is pushing out) -- rather than the fact that he was single and it will be an "estate matter."

False in that the ACTUAL total bill is probably not even known at this point (despite the nice round number of $400,000 being touted... the man died barely a week ago; it is unlikely they hospital has even sent the final full bill yet).

False in that the "pre-existing condition" which certainly played a part in his decision (poor decision IMHO) to NOT purchase health insurance (or which perhaps made it inordinately expensive).

False in that the self-same "pre-existing condition" is likely the REAL cause that the pneumonia proved fatal (pneumonia for a middle aged 1st world citizen is a nasty road-bump, NOT a fatal end).

AND likewise that "pre-existing condition" was the REAL cause that the hospital bill was so inordinately high (treating patients with that particular "pre-existing condition" is significantly more complex AND expensive).

Thus the campaign needs to learn the TRUTH of the age-old saying from Sir Walter Scott:

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.

Because in order to NOT let the "full truth" of Mr. Snyder's "condition" out -- and in order to "idolize" him rather than be honest about Mr. Snyder's poor decisions -- instead RP and the CFL group have "constructed" a deceptive story ...one that plays right into the hands of the "universal health" advocates in multiple ways, and to the detriment of the liberty movement.

An because they (RO & CFL) are VERY unlikely to come out with any additional "corrections" or "explanations" (instead being focused on the "Kent Synder as Hero" -- aka Tim Russert redux) -- this will come back to haunt them even further in days and weeks to come.

they have for quite some time now.

...and then wonder where the magic went (lol).
