So I just quit Facebook and Twitter....

So I just quit Facebook and Twitter....

You are being reported to Homeland Security. If you had nothing to hide you wouldn't have quit. So what's your crime? Selling drugs? Trafficking children? Are you a domestic terrorist working with Al Qaeda?

Well, up until today I had a Ron Paul bumper sticker on my car*. I replaced it with my new R(omney)OFLMAO(bama) one, though, so I'm really not hiding anything.

:D

*Sign of a terrorist according to DHS.

Yes that is true. Maybe I am just defending myself, because I have held on to Facebook as a way of checking up with friends/family. If I don't really post on it, is it still dangerous having?

Honest answer?

I don't know.

I'll let someone more tech and FarceBook savvy answer that.

I'd think that less activity is better.

something like facebook it useful, it would be better if there was a no-profit alternative that preserved privacy, but that seems almost impossible, since users want to save their information, and if it isn't destroyed, it can be requested when the government needs it.

Twitter is somewhat usefull; group wise instant messaging. I use it once a year when going to a certain techncal conference, specifically to score free beer. It awesome for that.

Facebook on the other hand, I will never, ever sign up on that crap. I see so many people at work, mostly under 30, on that crap constantly. Like a friggin rat slapping a switch to get another intra-cranial electrical stimulation.

Doesn't mean you have to make it easy for them, or have employers, or ex spouses, or asshole neighbors, or whomever, digging around in your life.

Fuck a bunch of FedBook.

Throw it in the woods.

Yeah, but now they will wonder about you if you don't have a facebook. They must figure you are up to no good. It may be a vain attempt to reach the sheeple on facebook, but I am going to try anyway. You can't change this nation by hiding in a closet.

Good luck.

I'll stick to my closet.

LOL

You just inspired me to delete mine(been thinking about it for a while). I think I'd been on there since '06?

I never posted political stuff just because I think it's super annoying and unhelpful, but the Brandom Raub incident sort of freaked me out. I think I'll be a lot more efficient without it. I also hate that subconscious consideration of how something you're doing will look on FB. No wonder we're a generation of kids with aimless identities.

If you worry about how things will look to other people then how are you ever going to tell them about the truth? Speak the truth and don't worry about how it looks to other people. Idiots are going to be idiots regardless what you do or don't do. Don't let them stop you form expressing yourself. If you want to be free, you have to first act free.

Well if it wasn't for Facebook i wouldn't able to find my lost best childhood friend in which i did find him.

Well said and totally true.

I don't know if you're alluding specifically to liberty/freedom type political posts, or just freedom of expression in general. Regardless I posted rarely. What I was trying to explain is that FB is so merged into society now (or at least among young people) that padding our virtual lives becomes a motivator for the decisions we make in the rest of our lives. It's not that I greatly fear expressing myself or struggle with this aspect, but that it irks me when people whip out cameras at parties for the sole reason of showing off their weekend, or learning hobbies just to add to their social resume, even if it's just in their subconscious. At least if I'm not on there, I don't really have to let it cross my mind in real life that I might somehow get tagged or something and have to play along. Part of it is just me being cynical, and over-thinking it, and being under 25. But I at least need a break (on top of privacy concerns).

I'm not anti-FB - there's good uses for it. :)

A lot of people are religious, not because they truly believe the same faith as their friends and family, but because they fear being ostracized by those that know them best. Facebook is as much of a tool as religion, but Facebook is the whole Flock of Sheep that will bite at you for going in a direction that is different than the rest. I have found it is much less painful when I am the one that cuts my ties to the flock than to have the flock tell me to leave.

Again, Facebook is not a tool of communication. Facebook is a tool to MONITOR communication, and by which, is a measure of control over those that use it to communicate.

If you are truly done with facebook, then dont even let them watch where you go online. Copy this code into your HOSTS file, or system equivilant thereof. But be forewarned, this may speed up your internet connection speed.

I can't vouch for your host list (no reason), but yeah, FB is fucking everywhere. So is google.

Okay, find a better one, cuz that list isnt great. HOSTS files unfortunatley dont support the * character to function as a Wildcard, which makes things a lot more difficult. For more technical people, you could use your firewall to prevent access to these IP Address pools:

Code:
Following IP address ranges are known to be used by Facebook:
66.220.144.0 - 66.220.159.255
69.63.176.0 - 69.63.191.255
69.171.224.0 - 69.171.255.255
204.15.20.0 - 204.15.23.255

Additional IP ranges which may be assigned to Facebook Inc. (Optional)
65.201.208.24/29
65.204.104.128/28
66.92.180.48/28
66.93.78.176/29
66.199.37.136/29
67.200.105.48/30
74.119.76.0/22
173.252.64.0/18

Those IP's may be out of date, and Facebook is not public about its ip ranges, which makes them even more difficult to completely block. Difficult, but not impossible.

I'm just agreeing with you without endorsing a giant list of IPs and shit. But between that and adwords/adsense all over the place, I'm not interested in IP lists. I'm not saying yours is bad, which is why I said "no reason." I'm just in agreement, but unwilling to screw with your host list. That's all.

Instead of a better host list, I'd suggest you find a VPN. How about that?

Why bother? My list works fine for me. If you compiled your own list, with competent computer skills, Im sure it would be just fine for you too. BTW, what are these so called "ads" you speak of? I get incredibly few ads. Not because of some list I subscribe to, but because I am the one that maintains it, just as you can as well. The reason that I put mine in the HOSTS file is due to the way firewalls work. They can block your outgoing requests to specific sites, but then your browser "waits" for those connection requests to time out. By redirecting to localhost with a HOSTS file, your own system responds immediately that the ad or service isnt available, which speeds up browsing. The disadvantage to using the HOSTS file, as I said in an earlier post is that HOSTS (thats just the way its spelled, all caps, not trying to shout) files dont support Wildcard * characters, so an entry has to be entered for each host. Firewalls will accept *.facebook.com, *.fbshare and *.fbcdn.net, but those do cause timeouts, which can actually go slower.

There is a point to this as well. Facebook doesnt give a fuck if you've said you quit their service or not. They dont even give a fuck if a court came down and said you are expressly prohibited from tracking this individual forever, they are going to do it anyway. The only way you can protect yourself from Facebook's intrusive technology is to make sure your comptuer doesnt talk to facebook's servers directly, which is about as much as you can do. They can still acquire information about you in other ways, but that is well beyond the scope of this post.

Ive made my privacy rants before, and will refuse until the end of time to use facebooks services for plenty of reasons which obviously many many people could care less about. Just as many people think the Federal Reserve is actually a part of the US govt and think we need it, they are the good guys, they actually prefer for someone else to do their thinking for them, which is exactly what facebook can help the Govt and Corporations accomplish. I dont really care if anyone else thinks that I have a Right to stop private company from tracking me, I am going to stop them. At the same time, I am not going to make that decision for you or anyone else. If you want to be used by facebook, that is not my business to make that decision for you. Facebook unfortunately does not feel the same way. They dont think that you have any say so in your privacy and should be told what to think. If you want to stop them from tracking you, then I can and am willing to help. And yes, facebook has even infected this site as well. Try doing a netstat -a and oh, look at that, facebook shit even here because of what I believe to be poor decisions by the person(s) running this site, but doesnt work at all unless my computer talks to facebooks computers.

And for the record, VPN's dont help as much as one might think.

No, you can be tagged anyway. Tagging just puts a name with each face. People tag all their relatives and friends in group pics. Do a Google image search for yourself and there may be more pics of you on the net than you realized, some of which are from FB tagging.
