Senior Rand Paul campaign official says Trump 'is going to dive eventually'

IMO Rand should not focus on going after Trump, that play should be left to play out itself. Rand has substance, on style he could even emulate Trump a bit and get bit more reckless/fearless in facing/answering attacks. It pays to be bold with some convictions/substabce to back that up with.

Rand should not go after Trump at all, except for his flip-flopping. The Trump supporters are the independent-minded voters who might support Rand.

Absolutely agree with these statements. I cringed a little when he went on the attack against Trump. It's a miscalculation on his part. Like poster above said, let Trump mow down the establishment Repubs. Let's hope he pivots.

Rand should forget about Trump, and think about how to bring down Carly. she will get a bump into the top 10, and that puts Rand in danger.

Independent-minded ? LOL. They will switch in an instant for whoever takes their idol down. Especially when it is done without the help of the media machine.

Carly, the clueless internet censor ? This is going to be hard. :D

Honestly, if Rand was given the opportunity to debate Trump on the actual issues I seriously think he would dismantle Trump and do so easily. No he's not going to win a name calling contest, but from what I saw last night, Trump wanted no part in debating Rand on issues and substance which is why he simply commented that "tonight is not going well for you.." Well, duh, dipstick.. You're getting 7 questions to Rand's 1 within the first 80 minutes of the debate. In fact if fox news is not successful at taking Trump down for Bush I suspect they'll start a fight between Rand and Trump in the next debate. They know Rand is the only one with the intestinal fortitude and intellect to combat Trump in a policy/substance debate. I'm kinda hoping Trump is still leading when the next debate comes around because I think his will ensure Rand is on the debate stage. If they're successful at taking Trump down then they would have no use for Rand and I suspect they'll try to drive him out of the top 10. I sure hope Rand's team is prepared either way, they got their hands full.

I sure hope Rand is working the back channels with Trump. I could easily see Trump eventually saying something like, "I'm dropping out, but throwing my support to Rand Paul. Those other chumps were too afraid to even touch me, but Rand showed some guts. I have to respect that. He'd make a great President - not like those other losers. He's the only other one - besides me, of course - that will be able to beat Hillary."

Rand could have rode the anti-establishment wave with Trump. They are the two candidates on the other side of the Republican establishment with the largest targets on their back. Now was not the time to attack Trump.

Ron was wise to strategically have an alliance with Romney. He just took it too far now we see his son go too far the opposite way.

Trump is praising Rubio today and slamming Rand. It could have been the other way around since that would have been Trump's most logical choice against the establishment before Rand's attacks.

Listen carefully, son. If Trump weren't doing a job for them, they'd never point cameras or microphones at him. But they talk about him every minute of every day. So, obviously he's an integral part of their game. They aren't trying to use Rand to take down Trump. They're trying to use Trump to take out Rand. And Trump will only make an independent run if Rand gets the nomination.

Trump is there to absorb the votes of the many people who are sick of the status quo, and to absorb their energy. He is not there to win, though he will keep saying he is. They well know that someone that some people love to hate and who has no appeal but flamboyance and obnoxiousness can't even win the nomination, much less the general election. But they know how to tell everyone who thinks listening to Fox Radio is educational and entertaining who to love and make it stick.

Rand had to take Trump down a notch, and when the dust settles Trump will be revealed to be down a notch, because Rand told the truth. The people who rigged the game this way don't care what happens to Trump one way or the other; he's just one of their chessmen and they'll sacrifice him when the time's right. But Rand's job now is to use the publicity he will be getting to talk not about Trump, but about the nation.

Rand could not have ridden any waves with Trump. Surfing is not a team sport. Rand Paul had no choice but to rock the boat. None.

Rand will never be accepted by the establishment and scored no points for doing their bidding last night. They want him out of the race as much as they want Trump out of the race.

They baited Rand to attack Trump at this point in the race and he fell for it. It got him no where since they gave him little time, gave him weak questions and then slammed him anyway after the debate while praising Christie.

What should he have done differently ? You play with the cards you are dealt, not the ones you wish you would have.

Did you watch the same debate. Rand was not dealt the Trump cards. Rand went on the attack without being called upon injecting himself in a debate with Trump when it was not necessary like a puppet of the establishment. The same establishment that wants to get him out the race as soon as possible.

He even attacked Trump on a subject for which they agree, allowing insurance companies to compete across state lines. Trump shut-him down.

He also attacked Trump for admitting on stage that he buys politicians. Sadly, no one gave a shit.

Yeah, that was rather unexpected. I commented on this in a separate thread - http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?479765-Trump-won-t-pledge-to-support-Bush

Agreed, not a great moment here. Thanks for keeping score.

I'm surprised Rand chose this strategy because up until last night he was trying very hard NOT to attack Trump. I think he changed his strategy out of desperation because he knew they were going to ignore him all night. Rand did the best he could under the circumstances, and overall it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great.

As long as he continues to make the top 10 (or whatever the criteria is for the next debates), I'm sure he'll get better.

you watched a different debate than i did.

Rand got ticked at Trumps "No one has ever done anything about it but now im here to do something about it" lie on resisting a single-payer system...Paul responded "we've been against it for over 10 years"
