i got pulled over yesterday for not wearing my seat belt. the officer asked for my id and proof if insurance. i gave it to him and he headed back to his car, paused, then came back and asked me why i didnt have my seat belt on. i said, "i think it is a personal choice. i would rather die by going through the windshield than by burning to death in my truck". he went on to his car and came back about 2-3 mins later and said he agreed and let me go with a "verbal warning". maybe he say my ron paul sticker on my truck too......

You were lucky. They usually claim it is the law and hand you a ticket. Usually, it doesn't matter what they think about the validity of the laws, but that they are paid to enforce them.

You could always get one of those fake seat belts that makes you look like you are wearing a seat belt. Sort of like those dickies people used to wear and it made them look like they were wearing a turtle neck sweater.

I remember when I was in the military, they made it a rule we had to have a tee shirt on when we were on liberty. It was nearly 100 degrees out and so hot nobody wanted to wear a tee shirt under their regular shirt. So, many of us just cut the bottom off of our tee shirts and wore the tops like a dickie. It worked too, nobody stopped us when we were leaving the base.

It is not a matter of safety, it is a matter of it being mandatory. Like the motorcycle helmet laws. If somebody wants to live dangerously, it is their prerogative, not the choice of the federal government. Luckily, the helmet laws are by the state government and not by the federal government.

So what about their rights? When I was a kid, I used to stand up in the back seat.
Yes, it is smart to wear seat belts, but it should not be mandatory. If the parent doesn't care enough about the kid, then it is the parents fault the kid got hurt or killed in an accident. The government should not be dictating how we raise our kids.

I was basically cut in half by a lap belt. Duadium severed, vertibrea pulled out of joint...It's only by God's grace that I am alive & can walk. I was in the back seat & wanted to be a good example to my children, 4 & 18 mos! Won't do that again.

They are over 18 and I let them do what they think is best.

However, if they are riding with me, I do request they buckle up. I don't want a ticket because they didn't.

If they are a passenger and you are the driver, it doesn't matter how old they are.
If you are driving, you will get a ticket if your grandma is riding with you without her seat belt on and they pull you over.

Well, seatbelts actually protect other drivers as well. If you weren't wearing one, and spun out, you'd slide around your car, or out the window, and the car could hit someone else. If you have your seatbelt on, you have the chance to regain control of your car, quite possibly saving someone else's life.

This happened to my grandpa when it was slick out. From then on, he wore a seatbelt when there was snow on the ground.

Yeah, I got in a wreck once and the cargo in the back seat crushed the front seat into the steering wheel. I went out through the windshield opening after the windshield had popped out.

I landed on the ground with an 18 stitch cut on the back of my head from where it was sliced open on the sheet metal that had been holding in the windshield.

If I had not been ejected from the car, I would have been crushed. There was a load of concrete blocks in the back of the station wagon. They had crushed the seat back flat onto the steering wheel.

There are times when seat belts save people and other times they kill people.
Probably most of the time, they save people.
