Scope Advice?

No problem there at all, but a rifle zero between two different shooters is likely to be juuust a little off.

Yeah, I would assume as much. Both are meant to be survival rifles really though, with the AR being mine and the .22 being hers. So we'd zero those to each of ours. But I'd rather have her familiar with my rifle, even with the zero off slightly, than not be familiar with it at all (and vice-versa) :)

Thanks again!

A few questions for anyone more familiar with Appleseed based on their "How to Prepare" lists on their website:
1.) It says to bring 10- or 20-round mags. Is there any problem with 30-round mags? That's all I have (10 of them) and don't really have any desire to buy smaller-capacity ones.

There is the tendency to use the 30 rounders as a monopod in the prone position. That may not always be the case in real life. Fight the urge to rely on that yo provide increased stability of the position. The goal is to create good habits because under stress your body will regress to what it knows best.

If you are going to bring a cover for foul weather, it helps if its transparent. The line safety officers have to be able to see the safety engaged, chamber flag in place, and magazine removed between each stage. Opaque covers take longer to check.

If the event is not sold out, I suggest you bring an extra rifle if you have one and set up the extra rifle and shooting mat on the line. If the event is filled, there likely won't be space to do that. Most shoot bosses will only let you bring rifles to the line in the morning and during the lunch break.

Well my rifle has iron sights already because of the fixed carry handle. If I get a see-through mount for the scope I could use the iron sights for shorter ranges, while still having the scope for longer ranges. At least that's my plan currently.

How far do you want to shoot? With open sights on an AR with a little bit of training you should be able to shoot accurately out to 500 yards. I can't see a SHTF situation where you would need to shoot out past 500 yards. Spend $80 and go to an Appleseed for the weekend. If after that you still think you need a scope, Nikon, Leupold and Vortex will suit your needs.

Eh, the right optic will always increase your precision. Could be the difference between 'center mass' and 'between the eyes' at 350yd. Also, people get old and their eyes don't work as good as they used to. I've been a 10 for 10 iron sight shooter at 500yd for the last 22 years. My next rifle is getting combat optics, because my eyes are not getting me the long range precision they used to.

This seems like the ultimate combination....

Thats badass. Scary badass.

For plinking woodland prey and defending yourself, I say stick w/ Iron sights. SHTF you're not out hunting the mega buck who won't come within 650 yards of man. For better dusk dawn, upgrade to tritium / tru-dot front sight. No shame in a nice laser flashlight combo for SHTF home invasion. Like others have said, I'd stick in the open ret, 1.5 or 2 red dot or 1.5-6x32 on a scope for your needs; SHTF, chances are you're not defending a fortified position and you're not invading an enemy's either... likely you're dealing w/ issues under 100 yards in your own yard or on the move.

If I were you:

Maybe a $50 flashlight/laser combo. Call it done.

buy bullets. buy lots of f'ing bullets. fire them.

repeat.

A simple red dot sight is probably your best option. Magnification of any kind, even just a 2x ACOG makes it harder to acquire targets quickly. If you are looking for a defense weapon against other armed people, being able to shoot them before they shoot you is essential. Target acquisition is key. Magnification is for sniping and game hunting to make the quickest or most humane kills. In a firefight battle, who cares if you kill them clean. You just want to hit them first before they hit you.

I pretty much agree with everything you say, except to say that with some practice and using the 'both eyes open' technique, you can get 1.5x acquisition down pretty durn quick. But it no-joke takes some work to get there. If you have been hefting the same rifle for years until it points like a finger, you can even get dam quick on a 2x with both eyes open, but really I wouldn't go over 1.5x for the kind of furball you are describing, for exactly that reason. That's why I like the 1.5x6 so much. At 1.5x and a bit of practice you can acquire dam near as quick as irons; and you can still dial in 6x when you need to be crazy precise.

There is a real technique involved in acquiring as quick with a 1.5 as with irons though, and it involves keeping both eyes open. It's not for everyone, and it can cause headaches.

The intent of this weapon is primarily as a SHTF gun... whatever scope I decide upon needs to be relatively rugged as well... engagements up to 200 yards or so (300 at most).

If you have the cash, ACOG.

/thread

PS: if not the cash, EOTECH. I have a 553 on an AR. No magnification - great acquisition, easy to dial in, etc. Less $$ than ACOG, but I'd still like to get one.
