At the same time, I'm not sure about it. Isn't this how a lot of European elections work with run-offs?

And to answer your previous question, I think TPTB are going all in on the democrat party.

I do think there are some figureheads in the GOP who are still useful to their ambitions (McConnell, Graham, etc), but there's no easy replacement for them that won't be scrutinized by the grassroots. The Democratic party is, by comparison, much easier to control and get everyone to fall in line without thinking.

(hence the narrative about the GOP being full of chaos at the moment, and unfit to govern)
