RP Booths at Iowa County Fairs

That sounds great. Have you communicated with the official campaign? Have they outfitted you with materials that you might need? You might want you set up a webpage, maybe your facebook, with pictures of current Ron Paul Campaigning at Fairs. I'm not sure exactly what the benefit would be, but it could serve a positive function. Have you seen the Iowa for Ron Paul facebook page? http://www.facebook.com/RP2012IA

Lauren and Jill-- would love some help with Wapello Fair. Am setting up a booth there with a 10' x 10' tent either today or Friday evening, I dont have anyone helping me except friday night and I cannot do all five days as I have to work in Fairfield. I have a box of slim jims from the Campaign, and a banner. We're having a meeting on Friday in Fairfield with the Ron Paul regional director- you're welcome to come. Details at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=189512121097508 and http://www.meetup.com/Fairfield4RonPaul/

Iowa fairs updated

If the fair is bolded, that means we have a active Meetup in that county or orphaned supporters and they are not on our list of fairs that we are doing. These folks could use a nudge...

If peoples names in brackets after a fair are bolded, that means we have people doing that fair. Sometimes that is followed by the word ORPHANED and a link to their waiting list where they can be contacted to get additional help.

The OP hadn't beenupdated in a couple of weeks, so I thought it would be helpful to put things in perspective and we could get working on landing a few more volunteers and fairs.

A leading (A) means we have/had a Meetup in that county.

Marion Co.

I just talked to Marion Co, and he said he got an email from somebody re: a Ron Paul booth yesterday... is that anybody from here?? The fee is only $100 for the entire week (July 15-21). They sent me an application form. The official campaign said they could help with registration fees, but then all the merchandise we use must then come from the official campaign. So I'll email them next. Anyway, it's in Knoxville and has 75,000 attendance! So that's pretty good. I could handle two full days out of 7/18, 7/19, 7/20 and 7/21, but obviously we'll need lots more volunteers! Anybody willing?

I put you down for it.
This is sounding like they are not going to come through with the promise to do the 25 county fairs with the largest attendance. Annoying about the their stuff only rule, but at least we now know they are supplying stuff for the fairs. Could you ask when you talk to them how the top 25 thing is going? Also, they have never told us if they are doing the State fair. Someone had a application - I think it was IDefendThePlatform.

I thought I heard that they won't allow it at the State Fair? I thought somebody said they don't allow booths for individual candidates, but they have booths for the parties. I volunteered at the Republican booth last year and hope to do it again this year and make sure Ron Paul's literature is out in front. :) It's a good location too, right at a main entrance of the building. Hopefully campaign representatives will stop by a lot too and even Ron Paul himself! :) I think there might be sort of a straw poll at the state fair too -- or a corn kernel poll or something. Don't quote me on that though.

How do we deal with this insurance requirement thing at a lot of fairs? Is that something the official campaign needs to take care of?

Ask the fair to refer you to a company that covers that sort of thing. It should be pretty cheap, but yes, ask the campaign to cover it. Do make an inquiry to find out how much it costs before taking that to the campaign. There is simply not that much bad that can happen in a 8x10 booth where you are not selling swords or doing fire eating... :)

Here is a place that sells it - more expensive than I remember...

Does this mean we already have a booth reserved for Hardin county? I called them today but it was just a message. It's pretty far for me, but I'd be willing to help out there if needed.

I'll try to keep this organized:

Michelle:
Yeah, that was me that emailed Marion county, but if you are getting the app and want to take the lead on it please be my guest! I think having the campaign pay the fee and supply the lit would be great, personally.

And yes, we have a space reserved for the Hardin fair, so if you can come that would be great! Also please let me know if you are able to recruit any other volunteers!

Tangent:
Yes, I applied for the state fair and was turned down cuz they don't allow individual candidates. But I called the state Republican office and they said we would be allowed space to display Ron Paul literature at the Republican party booth as long as we send them the literature ahead of time so they know what it says. I'm forwarding that on to the official campaign as well, and will let you know what I hear. Michelle, if you volunteer for that again this year that would be awesome.

Badger Paul I've got you down for Allamakee, but at this point we definitely need more help before we are able to commit to a space, IMO. If anyone else can help with that, please let me know.

Wapello Fair started today. 30,000 attendance. BrianH is doing the organizing and pretty much everything for that one, so I'm sure he'll let us know how it goes.

Excellent. Glad to see us off to a good start.

Is everyone else good on their slots?
Any other volunteers?
As to orphans where we lack staffing or lack doing the fair at all, anyone willing to do some coordinated contacting?

Got an email from the campaign:

"Michelle,

The campaign can cover any registration costs or fees but be sure to pass along that information to Steve Bierfeldt. He holds the power of the purse and could probably reimburse you for Boone County fair if you have already paid. On second though, you could probably take any Ron Paul stuff you want, both FEC approved and other. However, when you display items at the booth, just makes sure its the FEC approved items. Then you can distribute both items, but if anyone asks you about it, just say you're a grass roots supporter. Before you go to the fair, check in with us and you can borrow one of our large banners or a few of them. banners are expensive and I wouldn't want you to take on any extra costs. As long as they are treated well, which I'm sure they will, all will be fine.

As far as republican registration goes, that's totally cool. I think the GOP would be thrilled, but again, not necessary for our purposes, but feel free to do so. It's peachy keen with the campaign and the party. We can print out some website info for you to distribute as well. Most likely it would be a screen shot of the website printed on paper, but it should provide all the info they would need. We also have yard signs availaible at the office. Feel free to come by whenever and grab whatever materials you'd like. I'll be sending out a mass email tonight reminding everyone of upcoming events."

Sounds pretty good, huh? I'll go ahead with Marion county's app and Poweshiek county's. Hopefully we can get enough volunteers for both of those though... I did have 3-4 people willing to help out possibly, but they aren't sure about dates/locations yet. One I think is going to take care of Adair county because it's her hometown. Still not sure about insurance though, and some of the fairs require you to bring your own tables/chairs -- is there any way to get a table??

I hope Wapello county posts pictures and updates. :)

This sounds like good info! - who sent it? I posted some info on folding tables earlier in the thread. We need to buy a few.

Also about insurance - which from that company is more expensive than booth rental. Depending on fair.

We need more volunteers and to focus on that! On many we only have one person - and that equals burn out.

Ryan from the campaign sent it. I'll have to go back and check the info about the tables. I can't afford to spend much more though and don't really want to have a table I won't use for anything else... There's also a lot of overlap between fairs -- why do they all have to be at the same time??

As for insurance, Steve B just emailed me back and said the exact same thing (that it's more than the booth!). The person in charge of Poweshiek co's fair said that it's usually businesses and they already have their own. She suggested checking with a local insurance company so I'll try that tomorrow. Not sure if she means in the town of the fair or locally as in Ankeny (where the campaign headquarters -- and I -- are). I'll try getting some information tomorrow.

I agree on the volunteers. I can send out another email, and maybe we could post something on the Facebook groups?? (e.g. Iowa for Ron Paul; Ron Paul 2012) Ryan also told me to let him know if I need help and he can email supporters. But I wanted to have a definite list of the fairs we will have booths at before I did that... I guess we can always cancel and apologize later. So which fairs should I request volunteers for? Boone, Hardin, Marion, Poweshiek....?? Thanks!

Is there ONLY one HQ in Iowa? If so, that is woefully insufficient, there needs to be at least 3 HQ in the top three population centers...in and around Des monies, Cedar Rapids and Davenport...maybe even Sioux City cause it is one city on the very west side of Iowa...anyone know?

The same with NH, is there only HQ in NH?

As to the ones where we have volunteers names after them, it should be the volunteers that know what's set. Best to contact them. They should all be go's.

The campaign said they were going to do the 25 with the highest attendance. It's sort of sounding like they are not doing this, but that needs to be verified and if not, the grassroots should make a push to do the more populated ones. The campaign hasn't said anything more about this so maybe they are fully staffed and paid for and maybe they have done nothing. That you are doing one of those and the campaign is willing to help you this way, suggests they have done nothing.

Then there are the ones on the list where the fair name is bolded meaning that we either have a Meetup there or orphaned supporters. These are ones that the local Meetup may be doing and we just don't know about, or where they could do it with a little nudging.

When next you talk to Ryan, could you also ask if they are only willing to help with fair costs and materials if the fair is on the top 25 list? as well as which of the top 25 ones they have confirmed and staffed?

Also, Lauren and Jill said they had applied to a number of fairs and were waiting to hear back from them, but didn't indicate which fairs.

The only fair where it looks like we have good staffing is Wapello. We could use additional people everywhere else.

So I guess the best answer to your question is fetch a blindfold and some darts and...
