Ron Paul on Gay Marriage

The problem is, the communists have stolen the right hemisphere of our brains. Education in UsA is focused on left brain activity, facts, numbers, logic....and the right brain deals with religion/spirituality and true free thought. Right brain also is what processes what you folks call "conspiracy theories"...in other words, the ability to read between the lines and connect dots, intuition...the abstract rather than the concrete. I still have my right brain, and have always been a right brain dominated individual. To be a true sovereign individual, you will have to find a way to develop your right brain. Tones

Here is an example of how the communists have stolen the right brain. Music, art, dance etc...right brain functions, but they now have made those things left brain functions with formulas, computerized music...graphic computer art, the expression that "music is math'..that sort of thing. Music is NOT math. The expression of music came first, singing came first, free spirited dance came first..as a means of the expression of the soul. They have tried to force expression to be a LEFT brain function. Math is the way the music was put down on the printed page. The music itself, is not locked into what is on that page...the sheet of music is merely a guideline..for the expression of the music which comes from within . I read music fluently, but I am not chained to that page. you can not trap my soul in a box. tones

I'll say this one more time, if I am forced to vote on the issue..it will be NOT to redefine marriage...it will be to cement in my state constitution what ALREADY IS> TONES

I've never been forced to vote on anything. When has this happened to you?

Western music is math. The only kinds that aren't are the improvisatory types. Are you familiar with serialism? You're right that singing came first, but in order to be used effectively for any artistic purposes, notation was developed in the early renaissance (in western Europe at least-eastern Europe and other countries developed differently). IMHO, theory is a starting place, the rest flows from there. That's why we have to use expressions like "dolce"-the written notes don't express emotion. You know, contemporary composers have used mathematical reasoning in their art for almost a century. I think you should put a little more thought into what you write. I majored in music composition, so if you need clarification of this, let me know and we'll talk musicology. :)

Awesome! Couldn't have said it better myself!

I was always involved in music as a youngster and sang professionally from a very early age. The only thing that ever turned me off from learning the technical side of music (sight reading, playing instruments, composing, etc.) was the dull and dry way in which these subjects were approached at school. Is there a logical element to great music? Sure! Anybody who has ever listened to a Bach fugue or a Charlie Parker solo can instantly recognize that. But these very greatest of musicians, singers, and composers build the logic from a basic framework of appreciation of feeling, mood, color, and dynamics, and have never been known for putting the cart before the horse.

Music education in schools today (where it still exists and hasn't been defunded completely for the sake of padding the sports budget), is totally bass-ackwards. The only exception to the rule that I've ever known was at a private Montessori school I spent two years in as a child; in a wonderful music class where we just sang, learned great folk songs, and enjoyed the art. Those all-too-short classes always left me wanting more, and helped me build on my understanding of harmony, acoustics, the social aspects of music, and the wonder of art itself far more than any other time I ever spent in school.

Music certainly is math. If you don't believe me, you need to take some higher level math classes. Music is mathematics expressed as sound.

PROOF:

Boards of Canada - Music is Math

Exactly, and understanding something doesn't make it any less beautiful.

Music theory is a powerful tool for songwriting, but that's all it is; a better understanding of the relationships between sounds.

It's still up to the musician to craft it in an artistic/unique way.

A couple of people already on this post have had their right brains stolen. No matter what, written music is a guideline...the music came FIRST...and someone along the way came up with a mathematical FORMULA to write it down. make no mistake about this...music is right brain and it is NOT math even though you might get the GIST of it by writing it down with symbols representing a part of a "beat". I also majored in music, and I have taught it plenty. Music comes from a totally different space than math..i don't care what your canadian thingy says...sure they used a mathematical formulat to annotate it...but they can not write down quarter tones and note bending which is the very expression of the music from the SOUL..and not from a bunch of notes on a page. RIGHT BRAIN NOT LEFT BRAIN. Haven't you ever known a very well trained musician that can read the S**t off of fly paper, but what they play seems very stiff and sterile? I sure know some. I am well trained in theory...AND jazz theory, modes, and extended and altered chords. Sure , knowing how to read is a useful tool, but it is only a guideline. The music itself, comes from the soul...it's not just about A440. Tones

very nice buddyrae...

well yes i know they are all frequencies, that is the SCIENCE Of it..that is not the heart of it. smh...RIGHT BRAIN RIGHT BRAIN. You can teach anyone the notes....you can not teach them how to express them...ain't no way. music is feeling...you can't teach feel, you can't teach what swiing is, you can't teach improvisation., you can't teach someone how to be in the pocket. tones

Yep! In fact, A440 is a relatively recent standard-and it has changed several times over history. Do you prefer an Aug 6 chord or Secondary function (or something else) as a pre-dominant function, tones? ;):)

a tritone sub. lol. I went to University of North Florida in jacksonville in jazz studies..tough tough for a vocalist and I'm glad I had been through the Armed Forces School of Music...a lot of theory and ear training classes there. Jazz theory...I sailed through theory one but jazz theory 2 just about killed me. I'd say it's much easier for piano and guitar players, horn players and singers..tough. you just can't apply those extended and alterd chords to horns...sure you can play the changes and I usually just work with a blues scale or pentatonic scale...and repeated pattern..etc. a lot of chromatics thrown in there..modes of the chromatic minor scale kicked my butt. I remember alot about :

I
Dont
Punch

Li NO NO LOCRIAN!!!

I have a recording of me playin A Night In Tunisia on my website:

A substitution? depends . maybe 5 of 5. maybe a tritone. where did you go to school? I went to univerrsity of north florida in jacksonville in the jazz studies program...it's a bit tough as a vocalist..but I do play some piano...and mostly horns..flute and soprano sax. tones

Did most of my studies at Scottsdale Community College, but my fave were the upper level theory and comp I did at Mesa Community College. :D I have all the knowledge that a music minor would, but I didn't waste the money at a "big name" university. :) I took piano and double bass in College, but prefer guitar, electric bass, harmonica (especially chromatic in C), and soprano recorder (flauto dolce).

btw, in Schenkerian theory, 5 of 5 (V/V) is just another name for "secondary dominant" or, in the broader sense, "secondary function". Theory kicks ass.

Yes..they just call it different things in the jazz world. i quite like the Nashville Number System..interesting and effective. kinda like Figured bass was all improvised over the bass figures under the staff. Have you ever looked at the Nashville Number System they use for studio work? Tones

I haven't heard of Nashville Numbers till now. I looked it up, and it does seem rather practical for many things. Does the method allow for polytonal (aka "serial") methods?

No, you've got it all wrong. The musicians are expressing math as sound, without even realizing that they are doing so, in the same way that a person drawing a circle is expressing the number pi without ever taking a geometry class. In the same way that a building looks correctly proportioned, without the observer needing to know anything about the golden ratio.

I'd even go so far as to say that music without math is not music at all, it's just noise. A kid banging on a drum without any rhythm is not music. If that same kid divides time into regular fractions and only bangs the drum at the dividing points of the fractions, then magically there's a beat and you can dance to it.

Okay, here goes..

Personally, according to my morals and religious traditions I am very conservative, but politically, it is not fair to assume my way is right.

Why do people not understand that God told us (Christians) to love our neighbor as ourselves, not to judge, and to dang sure not hinder someone's spirit. There is a such thing as understanding without agreeing.. .Why must we assume that just because God stated his rules to us that that was personal permission to push others around?! This really ticks me off.

I am not homosexual, do not associate with anyone who is, so I do not see how someone being gay and wanting the same rights as a human being has anything to do with me.

Funny thing is...people seem to only remember God as this vengeful, judgmental, cold hearted ruler, and completely forget about the parts of the Bible that tell us to live our lives without judging, to love EVERYONE, and to lead people by living humbly and spirited... Every think the reason people hate Christians so much, or want to get rid of our churches is US? Because we are mean, cold, judgmental, assume our way is the only way, damn an unbeliever to Hell, and try to butt into everyone else's business?

Maybe we should all, Christian, Atheist, Jewish, Agnostic, and everyone in between should take a hard look at ourselves and decide if maybe the one thing we are trying to be is the one thing we are farthest from.

Sorry, off rant... you can be as you wish, but just remember we become that which we are surrounded by...to those of you who choose to throw stones and live in glass houses, I hope for your sake, what you become isn't ...::gasp:: gay.
