Ron Paul HQ Launches Mail Iowa Program!

Thank you Birdlady. It is definitely better like that. The Straw Poll invitation was definitely out of place.

Here is the changed letter. I think I will print the whole thing and then handwrite the P.S. and sign it. How does that sound? It is pretty time consuming to do it by hand.

""Dear Mr. /Mrs. _________________,

My name is Mitch, and I am a volunteer writing to you in support of Congressman Ron Paul. I am not affiliated with his campaign, I'm just a regular guy who feels that Dr. Paul's message for the advancement of personal freedoms and protection of the Constitution is more than worth the time it will take to write this letter. Ron Paul is a 10th term Congressman running for President and despite the lack of major media attention, Paul's unique and consistent message has taken the Internet by storm. He leads all Republican candidates in official site visits, social network supporters, and video views, is attracting tens of thousands of loyal supporters, and now has more cash-on-hand than McCain.

If you're eager to learn more, I would recommend his website, ronpaul2008.com. If you believe in tax reform and protecting our Constitution, I believe that Congressman Paul is the only man for the job.

I would like to invite you to join his supporters at the Iowa Straw Poll in Ames on Saturday, August 11th from 10-6 PM. To RSVP for the straw poll, go to his website and click the Iowa link at the top. There is a fund being raised for those who cannot afford straw poll tickets ($35). Please visit ronpaulstrawpoll.blogspot.com for details.

I hope you can join me in my support, and I am VERY thankful for the time you took to read my letter (and poor handwriting).

Sincerely,

Mitch Port

P.S. If you have any questions regarding, you may e-mail me at ____. I think Dr. Paul is the best candidate since the Founding Fathers. Maybe I can convince you of that "

Yeah that is much better. You don't need a comma after your name though.

My name is Mitch and I am a volunteer writing to you in support of Congressman Ron Paul.

I was wondering if I should add a part to convince people Ron Paul isn't as "long-shot" a candidate as the media says.

Basically as follows,

If you think Ron Paul is too much of a "long-shot" to win please consider:
He has more money on hand than McCaine, 3rd overall.
Among people in the military donating to campaigns, he received 30% of the total money donated to all candidates, and 50% of the total donated to Republicans.
He drew one thousand people to a rally in Iowa, while simultaneously all the other candidates debating across the building only drew 600 people.

And if it is beneficial is there any thing else to convince casual internet users that he is a real contender?
Also I'll polish it before I start writing.

This is just my personal opinion but I wouldn't mention that much about the media or the internet and social sites. People who care about those types of things probably already know about dr. paul, and complaining about the media attention comes off as well complaining. If someone reads the letter through they should want to 1) like what they read, 2) want to find out more.

Things that are important to have in the letter:

1. Ron Paul's name in some form or fashions as many times as possible (In my letter it says his name 8 different times in three paragraphs)

2. Talk about Dr. Paul. His voting record and his family/professional life.

3. The website/1-800# (remember not everyone has the internet)

4. Be sure to give info about the straw poll so they don't forget to go.

5. Close the deal. Ask them to vote for Dr. Paul in the straw poll. I even go further and give them my email and phone number and ask them to email/call for bumperstickers.

Also I see nothing wrong with the invite at the beginning, if you follow it up with a request for a vote at the end. Using the car example, I believe it would be prudent if you were going to send a letter for a car dealership to have in the opening paragraph an invitation to a sale, for example, "We would like to invite you to our dealership for our Easter sale to learn about all the great things that we have to offer blah blah blah blah the new Chevy has x y z and even a, blah blah blah So why don't you come test drive one at our Easter sale. Then after the test drive, the salesman will try to sell you. For us, offer the invite, tell about the features of Dr. Paul, ask for the RSVP and the vote. And then hopefully they will come test drive Dr. Paul at the poll, and he can seal the deal with the speech that he will give.

Here is my letter (It is not perfect and I'm sure it can be better):

I hope you are having a great day. My name is Dustan and I am an unpaid volunteer writing you in support of Congressman Ron Paul. He is a Republican running for President and we would like to invite you to the Iowa GOP Straw Poll on Sat. Aug. 11th from 10am to 6pm.

Ron Paul is in his 10th term in Congress. He is also an OB GYN, an Air Force veteran, a father, grandfather and has been married to his lovely wife Carol for 50 years. As a member of Congress, Rep. Paul has never voted to raise taxes, has never voted for an unbalanced budget, has fought against amnesty for illegal aliens and has never voted for a bill he considers unconstitutional, regardless of merit. I invite you to visit www.RonPaul2008.com or call 1-800-Ron-Paul to learn more about him and his positions.

If you truly believe in tax reform and protecting personal freedoms, then please support Dr. Paul by voting for him in the Ames Straw Poll on Aug. 11th. To RSVP or to get more information, go to www. RonPaul2008.com and click the Iowa icon in the upper right hand corner.

We hope to see you there and I appreciate your time.

Thank you very much,

I included all the other stuff you mentioned, but yeah it does sound like whining now that I think about it. I haven't sent any out yet. I'm still working on a rough draft.

Thanks for your tips and opinion!

Ames text

Please feel free to use any or all of this text in your Ames efforts. :)

"Protecting the rights of even the least individual among us is basically the only excuse the government has for even existing."

Is our government protecting our individual rights and the traditional values of the Constitution? The answer is most clearly "no."

What are Constitutional traditional values?

Looking across history, they are most certainly not aggressive bloated government, a collapsing monetary system, weak borders, wire-tapping, or preemptive wars. America desperately needs leadership to reverse the size of government, lower taxes, encourage free trade, and get out of foreign entanglements, our bank accounts and our bedrooms.

Who can begin reversing decades of bloated and corrosive legislation from the administrations and parties who have lost sight of our Constitution and traditional core values?

We must elect a candidate, who will pursue a humble defensive foreign policy and who will bring our soldiers home and I mean all. That means saving almost five hundred billion dollars a year. A half-trillion saved and not spent. Compound that annually.

Saved for entitlements, federal pork and earmarking? Don’t even think about it!

In his 20 years in Congress, Ron Paul has not once voted to raise taxes or congressional pay. Professional lobbyists do not even darken this Congressman’s door. He is known amongst his colleagues as “Doctor No” for refusing any legislation that spends tax money on anything not endorsed specifically by the Constitution.

He wants the money to stay with you, to be spent locally, to prosper your own State and local community. It’s your money. Improve and use it to take personal responsibility for your own lives and local communities. In your prosperity, give to community charities instead of demanding the Federal government help the poor and unfortunate amoung you.

This was the strict and liberating intention of our founding fathers and the Constitution.
There was no income tax…none. It worked so well for so long, that our country’s prosperity exploded exponentially and was the envy of all other nations of the world.

Stop being a good Republican. Stop being a good Democrat. Start being a good American.

As the only Republican candidate who solitarily opposed the war in Iraq and loudly protested the corrosive effects of the Homeland Security Act upon our Civil Liberties, let's give Ron Paul a chance, to lead us out of this mess. Our country is literally going broke trying to sustain a policy of policing the world and a bloated Federalized system of government.

Please go this weekend to the Ames Iowa Poll and cast your straw vote for Ron Paul.

Thank you so much.

Someone please PM me one Iowan address, I hand wrote my 20 letters and have only now realized that two of the people are married since they are at the same address with the same last name. I'd rather not send both of the letters to the same house since they are the same and it just seems like it would take away all the authenticity of my handwritten letter. So someone please PM me one of the addresses so that I can send them my unique letter along with yours.

Thanks, I know its not that important but I'd like my 20 letters to make the most impact possible.

I will have to disagree with you on the invite in the beginning. It sounds really tacky. Iowans have been getting a ton of mail from other candidates. If you just flat out say "come to the straw poll and vote for Ron Paul", you haven't sold them on anything at that point. I would be willing to bet that your letters will be thrown out. Ron Paul is no different than Romney, Giuliani, or McCain to them because you haven't told them anything. You first need to show how Ron Paul is different to those others and THEN invite them to the poll.

Your example of the car dealership is incorrect. You said, "We would like to invite you to our dealership for our Easter sale to learn about all the great things that we have to offer" Yes you are inviting them to the dealership, but you are comparing apples to oranges. In your letter you are telling them to Pick Ron Paul at the straw poll! You aren't saying come to the straw poll and see which candidate you want to pick from. A correct example would be "Come to our dealership and sign on the X to buy a new Minivan!" Those are two different types of invites.

It's not a broad invite to the straw poll. It's an invite to come AND vote for Ron Paul. The invite is conditional. We are basically saying, if you don't want to vote for Ron Paul, then disregard this letter.

In sales you need to give people incentives or reasons to take time out of their lives to do what we want them to do (whether that be buy a new car or come to a straw poll and vote for RP). We aren't offering free straw poll tickets or a free ride to Ames, so we need to sell them on Ron Paul. That is why the invite should be at the end and not at the beginning. You need to "win" over your audience rather than shoving it down their throats. We need to let them decide on their own what they feel about him. All we are doing is planting the seed and moving on.

Edit: My husband is writing the letter tonight or tomorrow morning and he does sales copy/marketing for a living. He said he would let me post it up here once it's done. Stay tuned!

No reread the letter. It says in the beginning we "invite you to join us at the Ames Straw Poll on Sat. Aug. 11th from 10am to 6pm"

It says nothing about asking them to vote for Ron Paul, just asking them to come out to the straw poll.

It does not ask them to vote for Ron Paul until the end of the letter.

I also do sales for a living, and have a degree in pyschology. I am not saying I am an expert at this or that my letter is the best. Just that the invite is prudent and gets to the point. If a letter is to wishy washy they either aren't going to read it or are not going to know what they are supposed to do with the info. Remember repetition is crucial.

Also I have had success with this approach calling the Iowans. Many times the person on the list will not be the one to answer the phone, when their spouse ask why I want to speak to the other person, I tell them flatly "I want to talk to them about the Ames Straw Poll", I've gotten the other person on the line every time.

Edit: I have found in sales that if you have a good product (like Ron Paul) you don't have to give incentives, only when your product is lacking are incentives needed. Now getting name recognition is different, and we have to do that through the letter, calls and getting people in front of that fabulous speech we know Dr. Paul is going to give.
Just my two cents, all the letters are great and better than no letter at all, just laying out my opinion.

I agree with you. There's nothing tacky about inviting these people to the Iowa Straw Poll. It's an invitation. I don't see what the big deal is. Besides, mention the most important things in the beginning such as the straw poll. People might not bother reading the whole letter.

Everybody's writing style will be hit or miss. Just say what you believe, do it effectively, and get the mail out. It doesn't need to be Marketing 101. I don't even think a few grammar mistakes matter too much. They are supposed to be "real" statements from people.

I got lettergrams 66 to 82 done tonight... There will be just slightly less than 100 when I finish the list. I did consolidate some name combinations, that had the same address.

Mine have pre-printed addresses, but I write my return address and there is just a hint of hand written ink from inside the page. They look real, although I think if I do any more I'll use stationary with some color on both sides.

I received 100 names today, just asked for the yesterday. 24 of them were duplicates so I asked for 50 more. That should keep me busy for a while. These are all Republicans from HU- JE.
A friend of mine asked for 50 also. I wonder if any campaign has ever tried this before.
