Ron Paul campaign in Florida

Florida Republican Liberty Caucus just endorsed Ron. People have been sending mailers (I've read articles about them). They may not be doing the full press GOTV and TV, but the campaign shouldn't give media soundbites to say that they wrote off any state, even though Florida is probably the one they should spend least on....

I kinda think it's better for them to say they wrote it off. Then MSM can't say he didn't perform there. Kinda like how Huntsman's last in IA and Perry's last in NH is a non-story.

Bad move....I agree the campaign should not be spending a lot of resources here in Florida...but they should do something here rather than just completely ignore Florida. How do you think us Ron Paul Florida supporters here feel that the campaign has basically told us we are on our own, you aren't worth it, no support from campaign?

Nah. I'm glad that we're not contesting Florida but the media will use our poor showing as an opportunity to say that we're done for.

You say that just before Florida, if you say it. You don't say it just before New Hampshire.

I live in Orlando an I am A OK with them skipping this state. Resources are much better spent elsewhere.

Maybe, I don't know for sure. Maybe it's better to lower expectations now? Florida is going to be the biggest money pit of the race. Realistically who is going to emerge from Florida? Ron, mittens and maybe the grinch. Everyone else is done.

Huntsman not being on the ballot in other states, Santorum not being on the ballot in other states, helps us in New Hampshire. They have no organization to go the distance. We don't want people implying that. Florida is an UNUSUALLY expensive state for the delegates, but I was hoping they'd at least touch the out of Miami markets, but maybe we'd need to get them more money for that. If they are passing, I understand, but I wouldn't say it now, is all.

Florida wouldn't make sense to go after. Let the other campaigns waste their dollars there, if they make it that far that is. Romney may take the first 4 states... but I think we have a chance to take the 3 after that.

POLITICO's James Hohmann reports:

Campaign chairman Jesse Benton said Sunday that the Texas congressman will focus his efforts on states with February caucuses after South Carolina.

He specifically cited Louisiana, Nevada and Maine as places where they are bulking up their operations.

“We’re focusing there to win those caucuses,” Benton said in the spin room after Sunday’s debate.

Benton guesses it would cost about $9 million to run a comprehensive program in the Sunshine state. He said they will not run any television ads there, send any mailers or do any phone banking.

Because the state moved up its primary in violation of Republican National Committee rules, Florida lost half its delegates.

“It’s such an expensive state, and with their delegates cut in half the math just doesn’t make any sense,” he added. “We’re a delegate-focused campaign. We’re focused on winning the 1,150 delegates to secure the nomination. And the amount of resources and time it would take to compete for those 50 delegates just didn’t make sense to us.”

I think this is a good move.

I fear the big media will rip Ron Paul to shreds over this....When the MSM uses these words against Mr. Benton in ways he doesn't like - if Ron Paul isn't contesting Florida he shouldn't be in the Florida debates, Doesn't the Paul campaign know you run to be President of all 50 states?, etc. don't be surprised.

Even if this was your strategy, stating it publicly is foolish, as Romney and RNC will not spend money on direct mail attacking him now *sigh*

I would love to see him focus on Minnesota more. We have 40 unbound delegates for our state, 10 less than Florida which is winner takes all. We tend to lean independent in Minnesota which is his strong point for pulling support to his campaign. If he spent a couple weeks travelling the state, he could no doubt win Minnesota and get the delegates.

They will. They have already opened an office there and have had one rally where they signed people up for caucus training. 3000 people attended. He'll be there, for certain.

Maybe this is disinformation on the Campaigns part. Sort of surprise the MSM. They're playing this like a poker game.

I agree about the resources being better spent elsewhere but we don't want a poor showing here...we don't want another 3% like in the 2008 primary. 3% here again and the MSM will start with the he's unelectable nonsense again.

I expect you to feel the same as those of us in states he is unlikely to do well in. That would be to appreciate that his campaign is being tactical and practical. Would you get more jazzed up over a decent 3rd place finish in FL or a win in two of the three states he mentioned? I have been saying all along to forget FL, get a headstart in NV, LA, ME, CO, MN, ND, etc. As the resources will go 10x further in regards to delegates.

Don't worry Im sure while all the other idiots are focusing on the cash cow of Flordia, Ron will be going to Nevada, Maine, Minnesota and Louisiana.

When is the Florida primary? What day?

January 31st.

Hmmm, dunno if this is good or bad, considering what I've heard about Florida and how a lot of people love him there.

The campaign is not going to spend a lot of money here, but the grassroots efforts of several regions are still in full swing. There is an attempt to at least make a good showing. There are very very very very very VERY slim chance rumors of FL going back to proportional somehow, though I don't know how that'd be done. More than that, Florida's votes breaking in any large part for Ron would be a huge boost to the campaign in other large population-heavy states. We are registering voters, we are getting the message out, there have been some mailers, and so on.

florida only has 50 delegates?? damn puerto rico has 23 delegates and only 200 people vote in the GOP primary down there....

There isn't much interest in the primaries in Puerto Rico. The citizens there cannot vote in the general election.

I feel that it's a very good idea, and that it just means we have to do our damnedest on our own, which we've known for months now.
