I found Ron Paul in an unconventional manner as well. I stumbled upon a video of him criticizing the Federal Reserve back in late 2006 from Digg.com, not by direct mail, robocalls, or a door to door volunteer. So please keep in mind that I know full well that unconventional tactics have brought a lot of good people into the movement, myself included.

My original point still stands, that our focus should now be on conventional political strategies. We've built our base, and now we need to effectively utilize it.

I reject the notion that we should just let people do what they are comfortable with. This is the future of our country and our livelihood is at stake, and we are already at a huge disadvantage. We have a moral obligation to win. With that in mind, I will do everything I can to influence others to use their resources toward what history has shown to be the most effective methods and strategies for winning.

i reject the notion that republicans in the gop can nominate ron paul unless we get folks outside the gop to join the gop asap. many levels of marketing wil be neded to get ron paul the gop nomination! If we are counting on republicans as is. then do not worry the gop as is? is not smart enough for ron paul yet. we need newbies!! and marketing at all levels is still needed!!

And I reject the notion that a blimp will bring more than a handful of people into the party. Indeed, it could have the reverse effect.

I agree completely. What we seem to disagree on is what methods are the best use of our resources for recruiting more folks to join the GOP.

I have only two words to consider when we think about the list presented in the OP: opportunity cost

Here in Boulder I am leading the charge to bring liberals into our camp, getting them to change their party registration. I am all for building the party, but blimps don't build parties. PEOPLE DO. If you handed out just 10 Ron Paul Flix cards, at the cost of about 10 cents, more people would be interested in learning about Ron Paul than if thousands saw a bloody blimp, at WHAT COST?? If blimps worked, we'd be running a RE-election campaign today.

In order to win the nomination we need to:

Win over a large percentage of the GOP base. Obviously we don't want to alienate true conservatives, but neocons would never support us anyway.

Win over independents and get them to register as Republicans (or vote in open primaries). These are the people who turned off by politics as usual, an can only be reached by unconventional means (We should have a RP commercial during every South Park rerun, World of Warcraft game time raffles, free beer, stuff like that).

Lastly, we need to win over former Obama supporters and democrats. Either to have the least terrible Republican get the nomination (hedging bets, as it were), or sabotage the GOP with the 'weakest' candidate, thus ensuring a 2nd term. I don't care what motivates them, as long as they help Ron win the nomination.

I'm well aware that the odds are against us (I'm certainly not advocating LEGALIZE HEROIN bumper stickers), but we need every vote we can get, from every source possible.

Nobody's buying a blimp this time, ok? It's a stupid idea and cost way too much. It didn't get much coverage at all. I'd say the majority of people agree with me on this, so thankfully this tomfoolery is not likely to go through this time. If you are serious about Ron Paul, hand out flyers and such. Those are way better and way more informative than an oversized, flying yard sign. One-sided, I might add.

Peace, Peace. Let the blimpers put up their own blimp. Let the rest of us proselytize as we will.

There is no need to break into factions. That will only weaken us.

REPOST FROM THE MINI BLIMP POST:

"See I got banned last time for saying the blimp was a waste of money. My personal opinion is these gimmicks don't go anywhere or accomplish much. Ya the blimp was on the news for one day and a few local channels for 2-3 minutes - how did that work out for the campaign? 5th place, 5th place, 5th place, 2nd place.... etc. Knocking on doors, tv and radio ads are what get votes not kites, blimps, mini blimps, sailboats, airplanes and you tube videos. Have we not learned anything from 2008....gimmicks don't work."

EDIT: Austin is 100% right!

Personally I like the Ron Paul related music videos. For instance I've seen a number of Ron Paul raps that were awesome. If that idea could be expanded to include more genres like rock, country etc. I think it would be very useful. It's yet another campaign method that seems to be fairly unique to Ron Paul.

Hmm... oh I don't know... perhaps they WIN ELECTIONS!!!

Just a thought...

Historically they(ordinary campaigns) have won elections but I should point out that methods which take advantage of social media and the internet are relatively new to politics. What has worked in the past may still work, but that doesn't mean other methods should be ignored. Obviously traditional campaign methods are very important but multi-level marketing as speciallyblend said would be even better. The internet and social media are used on a much larger scale than during the last Ron Paul campaign.

I don't want to add fuel to the fire here because I don't like conflict, but there have been statements that I can't help but wonder about. The notion that the "boring stuff" is what wins elections is somewhat untrue. It is a necessary part of the elections to saturate the media with the name of a candidate so that people know the name and know it well, IF you can afford to do it. Ultimately, the media are the main factors that determine a candidates support. Usually they leave it to vote when they get it down to a few different candidates they want but if anybody thinks that they are going to back Ron and not slander him at every turn, you are kidding yourself. Sure he will be in the debates, sure he will get interviews but as we have already seen when it comes down to who they are saying is going to lead the republicans to victory it is NOT Ron Paul they are talking about. Usually, they don't even bring him up with exception to laugh at him and say he has no chance to win.

It is my opinion that we are in a serious battle for public opinion which makes David and Goliath look like child's play. The other candidates are able to have those redundant and shameless commercials because they are receiving MILLIONS more in donations from special interests than Ron Paul gets from us. If he spends that money on those lame commercials and "boring" methods, he will flat out loose. Financially, it is not a level playing field. If all the supporters went bankrupt trying to compete with other candidates, we still wont even come close.

This is the exact same issue I was talking to my meetup about back in 2008. The only chance we have at spreading his liberty message is to use unconventional means to get his message out and make it known that there is a conscious effort by the media and special interests to keep him out of the race. They need to know that he is not bought by these interests which is why they are trying so hard to discredit his message. It is my opinion that if we do not do this effectively we are dead in the water with no hope of getting Ron in the White House. Unless one of us buys Fox news of course. Although I do believe in unconventional, I did think that the blimp idea was way way too expensive and accomplished little. Maybe would have been better if it was at the Super Bowl. We could have sent DVD's with a personalized message to everybody in New Hampshire for that kind of money. Would have been much more effective. However, I feel people should do what they want. Something is better than nothing.

how about we just buy an hour of tv on all the national networks at 8pm and have ron paul explain just how fucked we are and why everyone needs to vote for him.

You know so whatever channel you put on its ron paul talking for an hour on primtime CBS,NBC,ABC,FOX.
