Ron Paul Billboards (48 feet by 14 feet) need mockups!

Any final designs to share? I've got a few billboards here in Rockford IL I'd like to plaster with Ron Paul.

This thread has mentioned design for digital billboards, with your resources here I look forward to learning more about Digital Billboard Design.

*Imported OP:

Hello guys,

I want to put up some Ron Paul billboards in Rockford IL, the second largest city in IL outside of Chicago.

I was thinking 1 "Blue Democrat" billboard (this area is heavily Democratic), and 1 GOP-focused Ron Paul billboard in a more Republican neighborhood.

I am not asking for donations or chip-ins; I'll cover the cost myself. I just need designs. Please let me know where I can find some good billboard designs -- most important, not just designs but in formats ready for putting up on a billboard (large image size or raster art)

Either respond to the thread with links or send me a private message with your email/contact info so I can get in touch and get these things up pronto!!

Cheers,
Andrius

Designing for Digital Billboards

Contrary to the rules for traditional billboard design designing for an LED billboard is now a totally different endeavor. Much like a designing for print varies from designing for web.

Whereas with a traditional billboard you might battle the speed of travelers, when you go digital, suddenly there is a new element at play: your ad is now also only showing for 6 – 10 seconds. This means the rules just got tighter.

Clients who want to maximize the ROI on their billboard budget will often opt to create a campaign. That’s to digital technology you can now create a series of billboards showcasing a single concept. Each billboard would contain a new piece of info.

Digital Billboard Campaign Steps of Production I

Here are my suggestions for a rough set of Steps of Production for the Digital Billboards in Rockford Illinois that are being donated. Please, add to this with our hard won Billboard Development knowlege.

1. Political Market Analysis of the Rockford, Illinois area.

----- Market scope = potentially 150,000 unique impressions.

2. Fine tuning Market Analysis of the target area by studying the physical location and traffic patterns of the Billboards
- Determining and locking in the dimensions of the Billboard.

----- There are 5, 14'x48' Digital Billboards in Rockford, Illinois

- Determining the amount of time a "Story Slice" of a DigiBoard Campaign with multiple, rotating messages should receive.

----- Billboard cost is determined on a CPM basis, (Cost Per Minute)

3. Identifying key Ron Paul Campaign messages to which the target demographic will be most responsive.
4. Packaging, (copy editing), so that the message is spoken in the target demographics political jargon or contexts.
5. Mock-Up of Billboard Copy and Story Board, (multi-message DigiBoard Campaign)
- animated gifs may be the best tool to use to begin Mock-Up development
- (+ brings animation skills into the thread)
6. Ongoing technical study of Digital Billboard development throughout the development cycle.
7. A final and thorough political market analysis of the target demographic with respect to the current position of the RP campaign.
8. A selection of the best and most favorable designs, (rough designs)
9. A fine tuning of the design, (StoryBoard), and finished Mock-Ups in animation, (or Static Billboards at first ...)
10. Final production of products ready to be fed into the hardware that actually displays the media on the Digital Billboard.

+ Research political magazines published with good distribution in the Rockford area.
+ Try to study and find links to big news article headlines that appear in Rockford papers.
+ Drop links into the thread here that will give us insight into the Political market available in Rockford
+ Research political blogs on Rockford

Anybody with strong experience in Political Market Analysis, please, take the lead here because it is the crucial first step.

+++ Techniques to develop multi-message, rotating ad style, DigiBoards need to be discussed. I'm thinking animated gif, but creating something in Windows Media Maker might be nearly as effective at some point in the development cycle, but to Mock-Up I think animated gifs might be best.

Your THOUGHTS please, :-)

lamar has a tool on their website which allows you to UPLOAD a .jpg to their server and one can then see a MockUp of your image on a billboard while driving in a flash applet. It's about like those video games we played when we were kids ... oh ... say 40 years ago ... very Atari, kind of retro really.

http://www.lamaroutdoor.com/index.html

Creative Lab -> Test Creative -> Test Drive

- which should then open http://www.lamaroutdoor.com/Uploader.aspx in a new window.

- Then click the "Choose File" button
- Then "browse" on your local drive to the file you want to upload
- Click the "Submit" button
- Click the "Go" button, (put a nickel in the slot at this time)
- Select the "Bulletin" product, (don't know why they don't call it a Billboard ... )
- Road Type, Speed, then Drive

It provides an interesting perspective and is valuable but has nothing to do with "Digital Billboard" preview and creation, it is a static tool.

I can't design but I do have a message idea, and it involves the other candidates.

The general idea is a fat cat banker holding puppet strings over three heads: Obama, Romney, Gingrich.
Headline: "Don't vote for another puppet" or "Want another puppet?"

Subline: "Give freedom & liberty a chance." (with Ron Paul's larger picture). Or something like a reward-induced feeling like "Give Yourself Freedom & Liberty This Time" (keywords being "give yourself")

Something like this may have more of an impact as it immediately places the media controlled candidates as the same, while Ron Paul will give you freedom and liberty.

So ... the participants in this thread have done a great job of supporting and encouraging the more experienced and more talented participants to produce, refine and DO ! And we got some stuff done. Now we step into a new world, the world of Digital Billboards. Sure, most of us have scratched our chins and we are thinking where does the development of this media live in the creative strata. How far towards VIDEO and full motion can I go, or is it simple animation ... or a mix of static images, some animation with a touch of video for spice?

Digital Billboard creation is a GIGANTIC, wide-open area of creative media, there are no champions, no leaders to speak of and the sky is the limit. So learning about this new, advanced media is going to be a lot more fun than static billboards.

Here's a very good article :

Content Guidelines for Digital Billboards

And that article is written by a creative manager at Daktronics

Here's another very good website, a specialist in Digital Billboards : Digit-X

And this is an article written about Digital Billboard Technology, it's current limits and where it is now, and where it might be going by SignIndustry.com

I'm beginning to think that these giant billboards, the biggest, the best the awesome cannot handle full motion video, (like we see at a football game), and cannot handle true animation.

The giant screen we see at a concert, or a football game, that's not a digital billboard, that's a screen, or a giant computer monitor and is much more complex ... etc ...

So I, and I hope YOU are thinking about series of static images displayed for up to 8 seconds that tell a story, a story board, a "message campaign", rather than anything wild and incredible. Let us know our limits and execute some good things exercising our limits and learn and grow through that.

Let us remember, the Billboard companies are in the business of HYPING their Digital Billboards and the technology they desire is simply not quite there yet. There are some awesome things about digital billboards, like interfaces that allow a person to update a Billboard from an RSS feed on a webpage, and automatic updates via remote processes, but those are the exception, not the norm and those additional systems added to standard Digital Billboards are proprietary for the most part and they are flaky and mostly vapor ... vaporWare, you know the drill.

The more we push towards getting just a single digital billboard campaign designed, the more we will be able to look over our shoulders and realize our skills have increased so much that a static billboard as we have been designing up to this point will be second nature.

STORYBOARD CAMPAIGN - (Slogan Iteration) - 01

1. "END the FED" = 10 seconds = (looks like Ron Paul's book title, currency outline)

- 50 seconds later

2. "Cut $1 TRILLION" = 10 seconds = (In RED letters, ), 4 seconds

- 50 seconds later

3. "Bring them Home" = 10 seconds

- 50 seconds later

4. "Ron Paul R3VOLUTION" = 10 seconds with the "LOVE-box", in Stecil-A, etc ...

- 50 seconds later (series starts again with #1)

Thread participants, let's start developing short, powerful slogans to string together that then convey the spirit of the Ron Paul Revolution.

I know the participants of this thread can take this and run ... RunRonRun ... :-)

STORYBOARD CAMPAIGN - (Slogan Iteration) - 04

1. "-Inflation- is a TAX" = displays for 10 seconds

- 50 seconds later

2. "-Corporate Bailout- is a TAX" = displays for 10 seconds

- 50 seconds later

3. "0-0-0 - is NOT a TAX" = displays for 10 seconds

- 50 seconds later

4. "Ron Paul - is NOT a TAX" = displays for 10 seconds

- 50 seconds later (starts cycle again with Board #1)

In this series, the phrase "is a TAX" remains on the Billboard throughout the cycle. Only the words contained within the hyphens change. And the "NOT" appears in the "is a TAX" phrase on the last 2.

Working on a sign design

Maybe something like this

12x24-1.jpg

I like that, or 'who can you trust?' underneath.

I just got off the phone with the Lamar advertising account executive in charge of the Digital Billboards in Rockford, Illinois ... Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin.

There are 7 digital billboards in Rockford, Illinois. The account executive I spoke with was very, very knowledgeable. They recently went to the Lamar corporate headquarters for training with emphasis on Digital Billboards and this person is also a veteran of the industry.

The account exec is sending me an information package via email which specifically addresses Digital Billboards by Lamar.

In a nutshell, so I can get the participants on this board informed as to the basics.

1. 7 Billboards available
2. All conform to the 14'x48' format. 5 are actual size, 2 are a little smaller by about 30 percent.
3. No more than 6 advertisers are allowed on any 1 Lamar DigiBoard over the course of a day.
4. Billing cycles, launches start on MONDAYS.
5. Cost is 12 to 15 cents per display.
6. Each display is for 10 seconds.
7. Our DigiBoard campaign would have a single, static piece of artwork displayed 1 time each minute ... for 10 seconds.
8. There are 86,400 seconds in a 24 hour period.
9. There are 6 advertisers on each board.
10. Each of the 6 advertisers on a board has 14,400 seconds available to them for display.
11. 14,400 divided by 10 seconds = 1440 displays of a static billboard, (in digital format)
12. Lamar guarantees 1,332 displays, (Amber Alerts, Public service messages, etc ... can detract from time)
13. So let's say there are an averages of 1400 SLICES, or display instances, (each lasting 10 seconds), for artwork.
14. Digital Billboard "Proof of Performance" indicates that no more than a maximum of 6 different messages/billboards should be displayed on any 1 billboard.
15. Again, Every minute, 1 of these static billboards is displayed for 10 seconds.

The information package I will obtain will have a tremendous amount of information about the Digital Billboards in Rockford.

The BEST news of all, is that the account exec I am communicating with at this time has access to every single Lamar digital billboard in the NATION and can facilitate DigiBoard campaigns on any Lamar Billboard in the United States.

It's not about Rockford, Illinois at this time, it's about national, Digital Billboard campaign strategies, starting with Rockford to get our feet wet and develop Steps of Production and knowledge.

More later as I absorb the electronic package begin sent to me.

*IMPORTANT*

There is NO animation there is NO video, there is NO moving imagery allowed and this is due to local ordinances and State statues in almost all locations nationally. Like I've said, Digital Billboard hype is for the most part VaporWare.

Digital Billboards are STATIC displays, up to 6 different static displays each day ... each lasting 10 seconds ... in a rotation of 6 advertisers.

Lamar Digital Billboard Template

The graphic you see below is from the Lamar advertising account executive I spoke directly with at length concerning Digital Billboard's in Rockford, Illinois.

Download this graphic, open it in photoshop, save it as a .psd, a photoshop file. Duplicate the file and use this as your template in the first layer.

PPI = DPI

Any image you find on the internet, import it directly into your project as it will be at 72PPI, (DPI).

AutoScale-BulletinDec2008.jpg

A maximum of 6, static Billboard designs are displayed on any 1 Digital Billboard ... we are shooting for 4 static billboards to display in rotation throughout the day, 4 billboards with related messages all tied together in theme for each "DigiBoard" Campaign.

Lamar - Digital Billboard locations in Rockford, Illinois

Location information for the Digital Billboards in Rockford, Illinois, (offered by Lamar).

I am refining and researching information provided in the Lamar Digital Billboard package which consists of a .pdf file with the locations of the Billboards marked on a fairly crude map of the Rockford area that is not as detailed as I would wish. An address is given for the Billboards, Billboard "Sets" and Billboard "Clusters" that allows me to find the Billboards in google and then provide you with these links and descriptions of what you will be viewing in google maps after clicking the links.

Please notice, as you change position and view the Billboards from further away, or as you pass through an intersection the Billboards CHANGE ... because they cycle every 10 seconds. 6 different advertising clients share the same Billboard. Their artwork is displayed for 10 seconds and then the next client gets a 10 second "Display Slot".

1 minute provides 6 Billboards, each displaying for 10 seconds ... each from a different client ... then the cycle starts again after 1 minute has expired.

The BEST Billboards are those situated at traffic signals for obvious reasons.

*LEGEND*

(Lamar's Billboard Number) - ([1st Billboard address coordinate] {xxx feet from} [2nd Billboard address coordinate]) - (Billboard location description)

=====================================================================

2050 - 5500 East State Street - You are travelling East on E State, Billboard is on your Right.

This appears to be a single-sided Billboard, not a Billboard set.

======================================================================
BILLBOARD SET, (East traffic exposure on one side, West on the other).
======================================================================

2051(Obv) - (Obverse) E State SL 200' E/O University Dr - You are traveling West on E State. You are approaching the traffic signal at the intersection of E State and University Dr., as you pass the Billboard you will be viewing the Obverse of the Billboard set on your left.

2051(Rvr) - (Reverse) E State SL 200' E/O University Dr - You are travelling East on E State. You are at the traffic signal at the intersection of E State and University Dr. After proceeding through the intersection the Reverse of the Billboard set will be on your right.

The Reverse of this Billboard Set provides a MORE effective exposure as the nearest lane of traffic to the board is Eastbound traffic. I will attempt to discover if the same content is displayed on both boards synchronously. I do not think this is the case, but it could be.

It is possible that ONE side of this SET is digital, and the other side is Print.

Reverse and Obverse are arbitrarily applied here. The Obverse exposes Westbound traffic to the Billboard set. The Reverse exposes Eastbound traffic to the Billboard set.

=====================================================================
BILLBOARD SET - Details pending on synchronicity ... ??? (Obverse and Reverse)
=====================================================================

2052 - N Second WL 100' S/O Hwy 173 - The Billboard is located on the Southwest corner, intersection of N Second and Hwy 173.

You are proceeding South on N Second approaching the traffic signal at the intersection of N Second and (Hwy 173/Ralston Rd), Billboard is on the Southwest corner of this intersection.

There are obviously 2 Billboards here in a set, an Obverse and a Reverse, details and analysis pending a call to our Account Executive.

Again, one side could be digital, and the other side is print. I don't know yet.

=====================================================================
BILLBOARD SET - Details pending on synchronicity ... ??? (Obverse and Reverse)
=====================================================================

2053 - E Riverside NL 100’ W/O Forest Hills Rd - You are traveling West on East Riverside approaching the traffic signal at the intersection of East Riverside and Forest Hills Rd, the Billboard is past the intersection on the right.

Again, one side could be digital, and the other side is print. I don't know yet.

==================================================================
BILLBOARD CLUSTER - (On the same corner of the same intersection) - (Single Panels)
==================================================================

2054 - Alpine Rd WL 20’ S/O Center Terrace - North You are travelling South on S Alpine Rd. You are at the traffic signal at the intersection of S Alpine Rd and Center Terrace, the Billboard is on the right after passing through the intersection, (the traffic signal).

2055 - Alpine Rd WL 20’ S/O Center Terrace - South You are travelling North on S Alpine Rd and you are approaching the traffic signal at the intersection of S Alpine Rd and Center Terrace.

Billboard 2055 is a double Billboard, each is 10.5 feet by 36', (same proportions as 14'x48')
They are side by side, (two smaller Boards)
=====================================================================
BILLBOARD SET - Details pending on synchronicity ... ??? (Obverse and Reverse)
=====================================================================

35710 - Perryville Rd WL Across from Cherryvale Mall - The Billboard set is passing by on your left side, you are travelling North. You are directly across from the Cherryvale Mall.

This Billboard set exposes Northbound traffic with one panel, and Southbound traffic with another panel.

Of note, if you proceed North from the link location given above you will encounter a second Billboard set. The information Lamar sent me is not sufficient to determine which of the 4 panels of these 2 Billboard sets closely located are digital, if they are all digital ... or what. I will presume that the Billboard set closest to the Mall, more "across from the Mall", has at least one digital panel, (either the Obverse or the Reverse).

=====================================================================

Rough analysis: I count 10-11 panels total. Questions I have for our account executive are:

1. Do Billboard sets display the same content synchronously in any sets?
2. Are some of the Billboard sets digital on one side, and static print on the other panel?
3. Are the CPM, (Cost Per Minute), fees less for Billboards with less favorable lane exposure placement? (The West facing obverse of a Billboard set that is on the North side of the road), ... could be a CPM bargaining chip.

In the .pdf file, a brochure really, that describes the locations and the pricing and display plans for these Billboards, there are several packages. One is a Billboard Blitz of sorts where all 7 of their digital Billboards carry your Billboards for a week ... and there are other plans. I will post an analysis of these plans but let us understand Lamar has done extensive "Proof of Performance" studies which indicate which packages perform best.

And yes, only the ONE DigiBoard can be selected to run your Billboard Campaign but any Campaign must encompass a full day, and there is no deviation from the 10 second display interval, displayed for 10 seconds out of every minute. So there are minimum fees.

=====================================================================

Candy bars WERE HARMED ... during this analysis and report.

DigiBoard S 01 Board 01-04 v04 MILESTONE 01

ROUGH DRAFTS for Digital Billboard "Campaign Series 01"

These are DRAFTS. These are "IDEA" boards.

Please contribute by commenting on this DigiBoard Series. In your comments include WHY you say what you say.
Include in your comments HOW what you say will benefit the forward motion on this Design Series.
Nothing is written in stone here, this Series is to get our feet wet in this Digital Billboard paradigm.

"I don't Like (that)", is counter-productive. WHAT (that) you want, where, and why ... (that) ... IS productive and is required in your comments.
The designer cannot process and bring into being, "I don't like (that)". A "negative" cannot be brought into being in the design.
The designer needs to hear WHAT you like and WHY.

Time is short, we have a boot on the ground, a boot with money waiting for these designs in Rockford, Illinois.

DigiBoardS01Board01-04v04.jpg

WHY?
-----

1. The URL used in each panel is in the SAME font and the SAME color as the logo at the top of the pages at www.ronpaul2012.com. This provides branding and cross-marketing with information already available on the internet.

2. The Pictures used have top rankings in the google images section, they are "believable". A wide variety of facial expressions is one of Dr. Congressman Ron Paul's trademarks, we leverage his countenance here. This is "product BRANDING". Your suggestions with LINKS to pictures you think may be more effective are encouraged.

3. There are four, interconnected "slogan-talking point-keywords" used. These keywords in the central "message box" tell a story.

4. The "Punch Line" is the last "message box slogan-keyword", the rest is "Slogan Framework". The "message box" is the central eye-catcher and should be the word the viewer sees FIRST and remembers LAST.

5. This addresses the issues of TAXES, the ECONOMY, WAR and DEBT. These are Central "Hot Button" issues the next President of The United States of America has been talking about for over 30 years, and talking about them consistently.

TEAR THIS APART, but say WHY, and provide the designer an alternative to explore. Add to this with your "that".

SERIOUS comments ONLY.

If you think it's good, If your gut feeling is positive, and just want to express that, then please do so.

Negative comments without supporting direction and support for WHY you believe your directive is productive is required in your comments.
If you have not had the opportunity to read this thread from Page 19 to this point, please do not comment. Please, read the thread. We are going DIGITAL here, Digital Billboard campaign ... POWER.

1st EDITS - ROUGH DRAFTS for Digital Billboard "Campaign Series 01 v01"

ROUGH DRAFTS for Digital Billboard "Campaign Series 01"

DigiBoardS01Board01-04v04.jpg

Design edits under consideration.

1. The "message box" will take on more of the physical shape of a traffic signal, and emulate the color and progression of traffic signal, or traffic signage, and this will be very, very slight, not overt. The series starts with a "Yellow Light", as we progress through the series, we are at a Red Light, then a Red Light with Yellow Caution, and finally, the last board, the "Punch Line" is a GREEN LIGHT, it is a release, a calm after the intensity ... Go forward, begin moving forward the consistent "LOVE" the last board, and the picture of Dr. Congressman Paul and Mrs. Carol Paul together represents.

2. The LAST BOARD, I'm going to use 2 silver coins, and a gold coin, (the Ron Paul gold coin), instead of zeros. These design changes will be up shortly.

---------------------------------------------------

1. Same?
2. Yellow MsgBox interior, Red Border for MsgBox, White Letters
3. Full Yellow BackGround panel, (right side), Red MsgBox border - Yellow Border sandwiched - 2nd Red interior border on MsgBox
White MsgBox interior - RED LETTERS, cut corners a tiny bit of MsgBox to emulate a traffic sign, (stop sign).
4a. White BG panel.- Green MsgBox - MsgBox piped in the URL color.
4b. 3 coins, Silver-Gold-Silver in Green Message box instead of numerals. (Ron Paul Gold Coin in middle)

a. Walking Liberty Half dollar
b. Ron Paul Gold Coin in middle
c. Franklin Half dollar

5. "Hyperlink Blue", line under all URL's.

6. Sharpen and color correct images where needed, dodge Dr. Ron Paul's face in the "couple pic".

7. Consider more effective and connected series of fonts for use in the Message Box.

8. Dodge Jaw Line on Board 02.

9. Add "Mouse Hand Pointer" over "M" in ".COM"

*DO YOU HAVE A BETTER COUPLE'S PIC of Mr. and Mrs. Paul ??? Please send me a link.

* ! - Franklin Half Reverse, (Liberty Bell) - Ron Paul Gold Coin - Liberty Half Obverse, (standing), or Liberty Dollar Obverse

*! Sisyphus helped me decide on the obverse and reverse of the Silver Eagle, and the Obverse of the Gold Eagle, 2011 mintage. I really want to use that Ron Paul Gold coin as well, in the middle ... decisions ...
