Ron Paul/Barry Goldwater Jr. to be on the ballot in LA

Great news. Anybody know of any other states like this, where one need only pay fees or collect a few signatures for ballot access (without the candidate agreeing to be on the ballot)? It would be interesting to know if Minnesota is like this. We could easily collect the 2,000 signatures needed from MN voters at the Rally for the Republic next week.
We could run a Paul/Ventura ticket in Minnesota. Now this is more like it!

Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" can't hold a candle to this effort. :D

I'd love to see a Paul/Goldwater sign done with vintage style. Does anyone know what Barry's signs looked like in 1964?

Here is his dad's sign

We should revive the old slogan too..."In your heart, you know they're right"

Oh--and Brent was exactly right when he characterized this as a finger to the LAGOP.

When this idea was originally conceieved, by a few activists in the Baton Rouge area (myself included), it was a lofty goal. One man named Randall did the research by looking through election law and contacting the Secretary of State and Division of Elections officer--he would later tell us that it was actually possible. We could nominate Paul without him even knowing and all we had to do was find 9 electors and $500. This idea was shot down by at least one of the activists within this meeting (we'll call it the "Coffee Shop Conference" :) ). That activist left soon after and the conversation continued late into the night. We included ideas about VPs, what 3-word moniker would go on the ballot, what the stated goals would be, etc.

At the end of the Coffee Shop Conference, we had all embroiled ourselves in angry rants about the Louisiana GOP and John McCain.

History Lesson Starts Here:
For those of you who dont know the history here--Louisiana was the state that Ron Paul came closest to winning in 2008. The caucus, held in each Congressional District in LA, was an event attended by about 1250 people in each district. Our campaign (the RP campaign) was the only one to file a full slate of electors in every district. We mustered the votes and on the night of the Caucus, victory was very much at hand. I arrived around 6, when the Caucus had just opened, and was astonished at how many Ron Paul people were there. Immediately I was encouraged. I placed a call to every member of my family and a few friends (they would all later come and caucus). I went in and voted with my wife. I was a candidate for elector and had re-registered Republican on the last possible day. My wife, Stephanie, had re-registered two days prior to me. When we voted, I was allowed to vote normally, but my wife was asked to cast a "provisional vote" because her name was not on the Voter Rolls. We found this odd, but did it happilly--supposing victory was at hand.

It was around this time that we found out about the "Pro-life, Pro-family" delegate slate. This slate was the former candidates for electors of Fred Thompson, who had dropped out just a couple of days prior. This slate had been about half-full originally. This slate was "unaffilliated" and would eventually make up a full slate because they cross-listed many of the McCain delegates. We discovered that this slate had considerable strength from the Church that the Caucus was being held at (Jefferson Baptist Church in Baton Rouge,LA) and that their church members had been streaming in all night to vote for their friends. It was around this time that we started getting troubling reports that this thing was going to be close.

My wife would later leave, and family and friends would come and go--voting until about 9p.m. Around 10, the Caucus ended and the campaigns were each allowed to place a representative in the counting room. I personally watched the counting for about a half-hour and left the Caucus around midnight. I left just prior to midnight and was told by the State Coordinator (Andrew Axsom) and Regional Coordinator (Matt Chancey) that we were ahead in ALL Districts statewide, but with narrow margins in Districts 5 and District 4, which make up northern Louisiana. At midnight, they placed all of the ballots in a cardboard box and put it in the backseat of a LAGOP employees car--he drove to their office.

For the next two days, the LAGOP recounted the ballots, refusing to allow the campaigns into the counting and casting aside all "provisional ballots" (which ended up being in excess of 600 ballots). When the official results were released, we had gained only a handful of delegates to the State Convention, maybe 15 out of 100. Brent can probably give exact numbers, this is simply a personal account.

End of History Lesson

Back to the current story. We're at the "Coffee Shop Conference", late at night, and all of the activists involved (including members of the Libertarian, Constitution, and Republican Parties as well as one independent) and we're all ranting about how pissed off we are that the LAGOP screwed us the way they did. By all accounts, we should have won a super-majority of the State Delegates but were screwed out of it. It was around this time that the idea of putting Ron Paul on the ballot became a reality to us. We all agreed that we would do what we could do to make it happen and simply hope Paul would accept the Draft.

Fast forward a week. News comes out from Virginia that the Independent Green Party has nominated Bloomberg/Paul for President and that neither Bloomberg nor Paul is going to do anything about it. Word came, through Jesse Benton, "We're not going to take any action to get his name off," Benton said, "but at the same time we're not encouraging it."

The Coffee Shop Conference reconvened, this time via email and we worked quickly. Within several hours we had figured out what needed to be done and set out finding electors and explaining the situation to them.
Privately, we met and discussed the small-details again. The 3-word moniker that would appear on the ballot? We would eventually decide on "Louisiana Taxpayers Party". For VP, many were considered, including Lew Rockwell, Gov. Gary Johnson, Rep. John Hostettler, and Chuck Baldwin. We would eventually settle on Rep. Goldwater Jr. because he would have wide appeal to the Republicans who dislike McCain. The goals? Punch the LAGOP in the nose. Make them bleed. Don't let them forget we are here and that we will punish them if they support authoritarians. And do all of this while supporting our favorite candidate for President.

Is there a way to get that affidavit signed by Dr Paul at the Rally? If he sees support, he may fill it out.

If I am reading it correctly, that affadavit does not need Ron Paul's signature. It needs the Elector's.

It says "I _______[Candidate Name]_______ being sworn..." etc.

The candidate is actually the elector, though. The form says the same thing here in LA, but it is signed 9 times...by electors. The electors are candidates for the Electoral College.

For the website, I'v been asked to write the content. On the "About Us" section, I wrote this.

What does everyone think of it?

"We are a group of liberty-loving individuals who are unwilling to see the principles of freedom compromised in favor of big government. For every political issue on the national scene today, we believe the simple remedy of less government should be applied. We endorse the idea of voluntarism, self-responsibility, family, friends, and churches to solve problems, rather than saying that a monolithic government is going to. As a people who have a long history of distrusting state power, we seek to destroy the cult of the omnipotent state. As a nation that once praised the principles of federalism, we wish to bind the state down with the chains of the Constitution. We believe that the government, any government, does not have the power to dispense with the rights of the sovereign individual. We declare that the proper role of government is defined by the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and Bill of Rights and that any usurpation of further power by government constitutes tyranny. Most importantly, all laws should comply with the Constitution."

It leans heavily upon quotes and speeches from Ron Paul with a few other things thrown in.

Yes but it is not the electors' names that go on the ballot

"and I do hereby request that my name be printed on the ballot for the election to be held"

Fortunately, MN does not require affidavits of candidacy. We need only have ten electors and 2,000 signatures to put Ron Paul on the ballot.
