Romney "Suspending" Campaign

What exactly forces a delegate to vote for the candidate he/she is bound to?

Fear of arrest?

Will a dissenting vote simply not be counted?

What?

Delegates are selected because they are loyal to the campaign.

Top contributors, hardest workers, closest to the candidate, etc...

This is also how the electoral college works...the best workers who brought the candidate the most votes are usually awarded with the privelidge.

doesn't matter what it is, we can't influence if he drops out or stays in.
what counts is that we have to use this situation to our advantage.

"now there are three" minibomb ? :)

If you saw how Romney was looking at the moderators at the last debate while Paul was speaking, then you know that this would never happen.

I love the title. I am going to throw out some WILD SPECULATION of my own...

Romney dropped out due to his latest facelift gone awry.

They don't call him flip flop Mitt for nothing!

He can just flip on all his position to fit with Pauls! lol

Just speculating here but to me "suspending" means he isn't going to actively campaign.

- His name will still be on the ballots.
- His delegates will remain in place.
- You won't see or hear any more paid advertisements or paid campaign workers.

I think this is about to get interesting.

Keep in mind that he is just "suspending" his campaign.

This is the part that concerns me:

Suspending a campaign has a different meaning depending on the party.

On the Republican side, decisions on how to allocate delegates is left to the state parties.

Part of me is thinking that this may open the door for McCain to take the number of delegates in the remaining states needed for the automatic bid. The other part of me hopes that Romney supporters will break to Paul and Huckabee. But how many of the remaining states are winner take all?

But if it goes to a brokered convention, aren't most delegates bound to their candidate in the first round? And if no one gets 51% of the vote then they are free to vote for whoever they want?

How is Huck and Paul going to pull off 50% of the votes in the first round?

The debates will be GREAT! An IQ of 160 vs two with 80 does not add up to equality!

The whole cowboy west will go 99% Ron Paul. Imagine the support in Nevada!

It depends on whether he suspends his campaign or drops out. If he suspends his campaign, he could start it back up the day before the debate to steal air time.

Mitt's supporters will not all just run to McCain. Too many of the conservatives absolutely hate McCain. They were really just going to hold their noses and support Romney but now they will have to do a little soul searching.

With the contenders narrowed to Mac, Huck, and Paul, we are going to get a LOT more attention soon. Most of the media doesn't give a damn who is at the top of the race. They just want to see a good fight so that they can get some ratings.

People love an underdog. Mitt dropping out is huge news!!! McCain and Huck will not survive the coming debates when Ron Paul gets more time. Plus.... I think all of Mitts delegates will be free to vote for Ron Paul if we can convince them before the convention.

Holy smokes! Ron can actually win this thing!

I think you underestimate the media's ability to continually ignore the 2 ton elephant in the room.

He did not drop out exactly. He suspended it- so his delegates go to their respective state party who decided what to do with them.

Ah, this makes sense.

Even still, is there anything that forces delegates to vote for their candidate, even if they are bound to do so?

I honestly don't know.

Well, forgive me for having some hope as a fellow Mormon. Remember, we do believe in direct revelation from our Heavenly Father and modern miracles. So, I will pray and hope for the best and be prepared for anything. :)

No! It means romney keeps his delegates, which is good for us......... i think.......

Only if you think his delegates would go to McCain. I think they are more likely to go to us. So now we have less chance of obtaining delegates on the first vote at a brokered convention, and also people might continue to vote for Romney going forward...

If RP can get the Romney people to vote for the only remotely conservative person in the race then this will be good, but I am thinking this is a plan by the GOP or whoever to try to avoid a brokered convention.

This is NOT good !!!

Why? = Probably means that McCain will get 51%+ of the Delegates = NO BROKERED CONVENTION.

Yup.

We're doomed, barring unforeseen ...

Of course, with Citibank going bankrupt and the war in Iran, Ron Pauls message might start looking really good.
