AF will have something to say about this, I reckon.

Robots learning to draw blood for phlebotomy

Yeah,,,
That's what they want you to think.

Having had my arm stabbed a few times by a bonehead, give me the robot. That sh%t hurts.

I'm all for it; it means lower prices and higher consistency.

Just like I look forward to the day when I can walk into a fastfood joint and there's only 1-2 human staff; the ordering and actual creation of the food is entirely automated.

Long way off, but it'll happen eventually....and of course there will be those hailing it as "destroying jobs" =p

I'm sure they'll be using them to forcibly draw blood at DUI checkpoints in the near future.

I like this because it would allow for precision.

I know several blood donors have bad experiences with the phlebotomists, and now refuse to donate ever again. Some of the phlebotomists just lacked people skills while others were amateurs and did a sucky job at drawing the blood.

This still won't completely eliminate the need for humans. You have to be walked to the refreshment table (by a person), and they watch you until you get enough food and drink to up your blood pressure and blood sugar. The same goes for blood tests and plasma donations.

Draw blood? Pffft! Get back to me when they can paint sunsets ... :)

Also: Why is this Off Topic? We've got a brand-spankin'-new Science & Technology subforum for this kind of thing.

I have nothing to offer, HB.

The usual suspects have chimed in, along with a few technology boosters, whom I suspect are praying that they will not get culled before The Singularity is achieved.

Of course this will be used for evil intent at some point.

If perfected, could be quite useful in paediatrics. I start an IV on my 4 year old twice a week. When he was 3 and under we were back and forth to the hospital a lot; could bring earlier home care for oncology/hematology families.

Along with the added perks of easier forced dui blood draws, ubiquitous vaccinations, and inmate chemical sterilizations...

"I'll be damned if I'm going to let an emotionless robot stick that thing in me...."

is a sentence that no one has ever said in any situation, until now! :D

What's next, a fully automated and mobilized "fleshlight" robotic device that collects human sperm?
