If that was a muzzle flash I don't see how it could have come from anywhere but those stairs visible in the frame -- and from strangely close to the floor of that landing, or stairs below it. The light from the flash takes a different path than the bullet, and anyone who has played pool ought to be able to figure out about where it came from.

Here's a view of the scene where you can see the layout of buildings in the direction people are saying the bullet came from. I see two roofs it could have come from and hit the right side of the base of his skull*, but I don't think anyone on that high roof could have seen him under the tent.

*If so, that was the muzzle flash, it could only have come from the low roof with the handrail, though I don't think whatever was reflected was that high or that far left.

If it is true, it's a good indication that the shot came from their right. They did stand back.

It looks like the only building to his right that could see his little stage is the Fugal Gateway. The official story is he was shot from the south corner of the Losee Building, and the shooter jumped down from the center of the north wall.

They didn't need to turn toward the shooter to signal him. It would have been suspicious and revealed the direction. A shooter on about any part of the Fugal Gateway could have seen the signal. But I agree that I can't think of a reason they'd need to. Who knows, though?

So, one counterpoint -- I'm not saying this "deboonks" anything, just giving a possible counterpoint -- is that maybe they are concerned that releasing the particular evidence that demonstrates his factual guilt could be construed as tainting the jury pool, and end up with a mistrial or some other legal procedural technicality. I'm not an expert in law, but I'm wondering if that could be a factor here.
