Researching weapons

Guess what...

Shooting a 9mm handgun, is full of shit.

Might as well aim at the stars...

While wondering where the ceiling is?

Now, bear in mind that everybody will have a different opinion on this, (I'll spare you the "opinions - assholes" metaphor :) ) but for what it's worth here's mine.

If the option and funds you have leave you with the choices you mentioned above, go for a quality rifle over an abundance of ammo.

Very simply put, a broken, inaccurate or poorly functioning weapon is going to make the 10k rounds of ammo you have put back pretty worthless.

Get as much "quality" you can afford, stick with the most common rounds available, .308, .223, 7.62 x 39, or 9mm in a pinch, and purchase ammo as sales, bulk offerings or trades come up rather than plunking down hundreds if not thousands of dollars on ammo.

Oh yes, and also make sure you have some basic spare parts as well.

Well said and makes sense - thanks for the advice

If weight is your major concern then you might look at something like this. It's the only thing my girlfriend will touch. It's extremely light.

I wish I could get ahold of a cheap arms dealer.... why is it 3rd world rebels can get tons (literally) of AKs for next to nothing... and I have to pay $2,000 for a cheap knock off.

Wes,

If you are paying $2,000 for an AK that is too much. Contact me.

bumping an old thread

I actually picked up the .22lr version of the calico rifle the m100. It is fun as hell to shoot and I haven't had any feeding/ejecting problems with fed bulkpack ammo. Shooting from a rest with open sights the gun is pretty good @ 50yds with the same ammo. I really enjoy this .22(well all of my .22s since they are affordable to shoot).

Here is a link to a very reputable dealer with good prices.
I have both the AR and the AK and if ammo prices are your concern, stick with the AK, just my opinion. It seems like the 223 prices are going through the roof while the 7.62 is more affordable and accessable, IMO. :)

I used to be a total M1A man until I bought a AR15. Now I have seen the light and have realized that the AR15 has so many conversions that I could shoot 4 different rounds. I will still stick with my M1A in the SHTF scenario but the AR is just so much more versatile and accurate out of the box.

Pretty nice for the price!:)

I just can't go for those exotic guns...[it's just me]
I am not too crazy about all those casings collecting at my feet either.
"Walking on marbles"

If asked I'd say "Get an M1A for a goto rifle. .308"

If you are in a pinch, you can set yourself up with a good AK or SKS [7.62x39], as long as you have plenty of spare parts available [just in case].
Well, YES, you need spare parts for every rifle you own, but the probability of the import parts vanishing is a concern of mine and more likely to surface than not.

Whatever you get, have QUALITY ammo on hand for practice, dinner gathering...and those pesky zombies.
Practice a lot...then some more. It'll do you no good to have tons of ammo and a 2000 FRN rifle if you cant hit a barn at 50 yards...
practice is like therapy. ;)

Among other tools, I have the M1a, the Chinese SKS and the AR15 and I am considering getting rid of the AR15 because I favor the other two much more. They just suit me better.
I can see the appeal in the AR (that's why I got it) but after I compared the three, I think I can live without the AR.

Don't forget patriots... a good 12ga shotgun is a necessary tool for every home.
There are a lot of flavors out there, select what suits your build and environment best.
Saiga 12 anyone :D

Ar-10

Had to add my favorite, the AR-10

One word - versatility. Not to mention countless accessories. I do like the M1 but it lacks a bit in accessories (so i was told). The AR-10 fires a .308 and can be used as a long and short range weapon effectively. Oh, you can use it to hunt animals also:D

for side arm I have my trusty Witness 45 magnum, double action, extended clip. (no toy glocks or 9s here)

final back-up, 6 inch dagger.

Supply and Demand principle.

Supply and Demand principle.

and gov't intervention into the free market, by disallowing imported "assault weapons" along with the fact that the Fed gov't more or less has also outlawed fully automatic firearms. That means we can't import the same cheap AK's that 3rd world hell holes can. All new AK's must be made semi auto only and must contain enough parts to qualify as a domestic firearm, increasing labor and parts cost.
