Requesting information on ak47

I've seen it mentioned a few places here, I was considering getting one based on some of the critiques. I have done a few searches on local gun shops, but they all offer traditional pistols and mostly deer rifles. Could it be a state restriction or are they hard to find? And also, what type of license would I have to attain to buy this weapon?

In most states you don't need a special license - it's just a rifle. If you are just looking for an AK-47 in general, look online at such places at gunsonthenet.com or atlanticfirearms.com. There's often decent deals on the Internet. Again, it depends on where you live. Obtaining a fully auto AK47 is obviously much more difficult and would require a special license.

They're pretty readily available here in Minnesota..

You might find that you'll have better luck at a gun show than a gun shop though.

I'm personally partial to the AR-15, as it's essentially the same rifle I had in the Marine Corps, but I'm giving the AK more thought having spoken with a friend of mine based primarily on the cost. An AK can be bought for roughly half of the price of an AR, and ammo can be had for dirt cheap.

Thanks for the resources. Yeah I assumed full autos would require special licenses, I'll definitely look into the semi auto variation.

Yes I'm very concerned about prices. Some of the weapons that companies like H&K offer are just way above my means. I'll admit I'm not an avid gun collector, but I'd like to dabble in it, and for the reasons you mentioned, the AK seems like a more reasonable choice.

I have to reply to this again. gunsonthenet.com is a great resource, I'll be checking the other site soon. I must say I'm impressed by the selection and prices, I hope it is as reliable as it seems.

www.gunbroker.com
and
www.gunsamerica.com

are good for getting a 'lay of the land'. Right now Romainian AK's are reasonably priced, 350-400.

What state are you in? In kali you can no longer buy an AK. Same goes if you are living in cook county, ILL (where as most of the rest of ILL is ok).

Yes I've seen some pretty decent AK's there, and really I'm surprised at the prices. I've seen pistols go for that much. I'm currently in Virginia, I don't know the exact policy on rifles and such. I'm assuming they may have passed a ton of legislation since VTech but I could be wrong.

No not at all, most Virginians realized the actions of one maniac with two pistols shouldn't be a call for more gun laws.

In VA you are good to go with AK's and SKS'

Really? Does this include fully automatics? I hope so, I must admit the temptation is great.

If you want to jump through government hoops, red tape and pay a big tax stamp to the ATF you can get a full auto... if all your paperwork is perfect and they sign off on it.

A semi-auto you can buy off the rack like any other hunting rifle or shotgun as long as it meets all of your state's restrictions like barrel length, capacity, etc.

full autos are thousands of dollars (some are tens of thousands) because the govt made it illegal to produce them after 1986 (IIRC). Therefore the demand heavily out-weights the supply. And to get the license you have to submit finger prints and get paper work signed by your county sheriff (the sheriff can say no and not sign it) and a tax of $200. So really full auto is only for the rich and powerful.

so stick to semi auto and be glad your in a friendly state.

and if you really want to have a taste of full auto, learn to bump fire... which is legal. Though not to much because your wallet will soon be crying :)

I see. Its really not worth even the trouble then, much less the price burden. I know how long it takes the gov. to do things so I'll just toss that idea under the bus.

I'm assuming most of the guns here on gunsonthenet.com are semi autos, which I'm very content with. I was considering getting a pistol because I'm not sure if I will be able to keep my family's .45 and/or .357, but I've always wanted to get into rifles nonetheless, specifically AK's. And from the under $450 range, it almost seems like a steal.

Is there anything in particular I should look out for in regards to purchasing AKs from this website or in general? (Other than seller's rating, most users here have A+s here anyway.) I'm no gun guru but I gotta start somewhere.

In VA I'm sure AR's and AK's are common. VA is a gun friendly state. You should join the VA Citizens Defense league. They are very active in keeping your states gun laws decent.

And don't worry about not being able to get a full auto. If you ever needed it for self defense the "spray and pray" automatic mode will just give you a false sense of security. Most of our troops only have single or 3 round burst AR's. In Vietnam when they had full auto M-16's they were just spraying ammo and then they would be out of ammo before the fight even got started without hitting anyone. Being a true marksman/rifleman is FAR more effective.

I prefer AR's but I do want to get an AK eventually. They are reliable and also cheaper than an AR.

So true.

Even utilizing select fire (burst firing) requires technique and practice.

FALs, mini-14 are a great alternatives to an AR imo.
