Report From an Iowan - DELEGATES!!!!

So far, this thread....2 delegates and 2 alternate delegates. That's awesome! I can't wait to find out how many more we have!

MessyTessy, I wish I could give you all the details... but ive never been to a convention. I assume that yes.. its just a larger caucus basically w/another straw poll and then district delegate elections.

Oh one more thing...how do the county conventions work? Do you all just do another nonbinding straw poll type vote and then fight it out for delegates again, or is the vote more officially tied to number of delgates?

Not sure how it works other places, but in Wyoming we had caucuses in December - like what the Iowans had tonight and there we chose delegates to go to the conventions (except PCs were automatic delegates). I became an alternate and will be at my county convention, but will only be able to vote if one of my PCs don't show. (Anyone can be voted to become a RNC delegate however)

Our conventions take place Saturday. At the conventions we will choose 12 of the actual delegates that will go to the RNC. And we will choose people to attend the statewide convention where the final 2 delegates are chosen in March. I'm on the list to be voted on to go to that too.

So, if Iowa is roughly similar to Wyoming - then their caucuses were where the delegates to go to the conventions were chosen, and at their conventions they'll vote on delegates to send to the RNC.

Sorry for spamming this thread BTW, I just want everyone to be clear that Iowa is kinda funky. Don't read too much into the straw poll ... we got a bunch of delegates to the various county conventions from what it's looking like.

Are there any figures on how many delegates we have vs. what other candidates have?

Also, what are alternates good for?

BUMP!!! +9999999, if only everyone on the board was reading this we'd have a reallllly positive board right now

Yeah... any figures? Will the campaign trumpet their committed delegate numbers in a press release, because that would take the wind out of CNN fast!

OK, there's some confusion here so I'd like to clear it up (for my meetup group meeting here)

How many delegates does Iowa have? I've seen 37, but is that state or local or what?

Seems like if preciencts have multiples each, that would be more than 37. Can an Iowan help me (us) out?

MORE MORE! im addicted to this news of delegates. we've been preaching to each other about this all along, and i do remember the post about dean having the majority popular vote but had almost no delegates to show for it.

i would like to see a lot more of these types of threads from Iowans reporting back from caucus!

40 -state- delegates (I'm pretty sure)

These people voted on precinct delegates, though. These people go to the county delegate convention in March to vote on who becomes state delegates - those are the people who count.

Also - Alternates are used at the county convention quite a bit because apparently a lot of the delegates don't show up. Alternates are used to vote for the state delegates when the regular delegates don't show.

This is important because being a delegate puts us inside the party, helps us shape the platform and gives us a right to claim a stake in the party. Good work!

So how many precinct delegates in total, and how many did we get?

So 40 total, and we have two (confirmed.) That's 5%.

Hopefully we're not getting news on this right now because our Iowa guys are out there caucusing and gobbling up those slots.

Our precinct chairman said if you're an alternate, its a 99% chance you'll be called down from the gallery to participate. That many primarys don't show up I guess... so it's VERY IMPORTANT for all of the Iowans who are delegates AND alternates like myself to show up to the conventions.

I realize we're all busy with work/life... but I can spare a few hours and some money.
