I was at a meeting of the Gaston County GOP executive committee last night, and Patrick McHenry decided to pop in and give an impromptu speech. I had previously only known him as the one guy to have an earmark challenged and actually shot down in the House, and otherwise didn't follow his career very closely.

During his speech, he started talking about the excitement of the nomination process this year, and went through all the normal spiel about the "Top tier" candidates ... pretty much what I expected to hear. Then, out of nowhere, he started talking about Ron Paul, and he blew me away.

I wish I had recorded the speech, because it would have gone great on the acclaim page at RP's site, but the gist of it was that Ron Paul stands for what Republicans SHOULD stand for. He noted that many Republicans feel that the RP movement is an invasion by libertarians, but that they are incorrect, and that we are helping to bring the party back to where it ought to be. I was hoping for an endorsement, which didn't come, but it is obvious that he really has a lot of respect for Dr. Paul and the revolution!

Considering we don't have a single endorsement from Congress, I wanted to share this with the board. Looks like we have a friend in Patrick McHenry!

He is District 10 - parts of Gaston county and all the way out to the Tennessee line. I believe it is a mostly rural district.

Oh there is nothing undercover about me. I was sporting my Ron Paul gear, and we had about 9 other supporters there last night. The local party is somewhat friendly towards us, but still a bit suspicious.

The reaction from the rest of the attendees to McHenry's speech was mixed. I noticed that most of the party officials kept quiet all the way through, but there were a few people who were not RP supporters who clapped quite enthusiastically along with us Ron Paul hooligans at a number of points in the speech. The one who stood out to me the most was an older gentleman who I believe is on the County commission who commented later that what we need to get back in this Party are true Conservatives. He joked that standing in the middle of the road will just get you hit by a car!

I was unaware of this endorsement, and the source for it in Wikipedia is not valid. But, if he endorses Ron Paul, that makes me happy as hell!

Yeah, I don't know where the source is, but I seem to recall it when it happened.
And he is a Liberty Caucus member, so no surprise.

I knew I always like NC, just didn't know why.

Interesting. He wasn't prompted to mention Paul, he just did so out of the blue. Well, Congressman McHenry is a young and abitious fellow and maybe he see the Ron Paul crowd as one he would like gather to his flock if he wants to run for higher office. We'll wait and see.

There is no way he was prompted to mention Paul, much less give a speech that lasted over ten minutes on Paul! It is possible he saw that there were several Ron Paul supporters in the crowd ... but we were so vastly outnumbered that it wouldn't have been in his best interests to pander to us.

Since he didn't give an endorsement, and he was speaking to a small home-town crowd, I agree that this is a wait and see situation.

Verify his voting record. If he isn't pandering to RP supporters, then help get him re-elected. Since you've done your canvassing (right??) you should know who your local RP supporters are. Let them know around election time that this our man.

I think this is another key to the canvassing. Identifying RP Republicans. Doing this will ensure the revolution continues.

Folks, you can still contact him. Many people regard Ron Paul as their representative in the house despite living outside his jurisdiction. As long as SOMEONE represents your beliefs, you have something to support.

Look into the funding of many of Ron's House campaigns: lots of out-of-state support.

Walter Jones has not officially endorsed Ron but I know he would like to. If he were not running for reelection I'm sure he would. He represents a district that has a military base. It took a lot of balls for him to come out against the Iraq war ESP. After the freedom fries thing. I really respect him and I hope he wins his election.
