Independence Day is filled with parades and picnics, fireworks, fairs and other festivities. Amid these celebrations, however, it’s important to remember that the Fourth of July commemorates a very important historical event: our nation’s declaration of its independence from Great Britain.

The quiz below, from the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio, provides an opportunity for you to test your knowledge of the Fourth of July and the Declaration of Independence.

A. Bunker Hill
B. Fort Ticonderoga
C. Lexington and Concord
D. Long Island

2. Congress temporarily set aside this man’s June 7, 1776, resolution that “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States”:

A. Light-Horse Harry Lee

D. Richard Henry Lee

I will admit I did not do so hot by their scale, but I think the trouble here is the Quiz has the same problem as Public Schools have. There is a greater importance placed on specifics without addressing why those specifics are important. So here is a question. Who was the President of the United States (POTUS) in 1776? Next oddity that may commonly come up is that George Washington had TWO Birthdays. This is because there were two calendar systems in place at that time. Wait, why is that important, and is George Washington the ONLY PERSON with TWO birthdays? Would not the same problem affected everyone else? Its the deeper meaning of what Tests like these fail to address as being truly important. Facts ARE important, very important, but should never be used to undermine anyones sense of self determination or purpose. So if you scored like shit like I did, it does not mean you are a terrible Libertarian or even American. If you only judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, the fish may believe it is dumb for its entire life. Thats a metaphor for people who score poorly on this test. It is only done in the Spirit of American History, and how little our own history is held on to by our culture.

Enjoy the Free of Work Holiday today for those of you who are granted a day off with pay. But take a moment and remember why we had a Revolutionary War to begin with. Enjoy what little freedoms you have left while they last.

They missed a few historical events of much greater importance, like the Federal Reserve act of 1913.
