Recently went to the dermatologist to have some issues examined. I had a spot on my back that in my head was getting larger. An actinic keratosis on my leg that had to be frozen off and an open sore on the side of my face near my ear. The spot on my back was nothing according to the biopsy. The one on my face was a basal cell carcinoma which didn't surprise me. I had one removed back in 2014. So I had to get surgery to get the basal cell removed no big deal. It was taken off with no issue or even a scar.
Okay now the fun part the bill my insurance company sent me. I have a high deductible plan. All of the cost listed are "after network savings." First the pathology service $296 I thought this was actually pretty cheap. Then the doctor visit and actual surgery where he cut it out and stitched me up $1604. Finally the follow up where the medical assistant took my stitches out the doctor then saw me and told me to come back in 6 months $714. The cost of the stitches getting removed caught me off guard. I can understand the surgery cost the doctor is basically preforming plastic surgery he is and artist a sculptor, but the stitches being removed come on. I actually asked the doctor after the surgery if I could take the stitches out myself and he said I should come to the office to have them removed, lesson learned.
Back in 2014 when I had my first basal cell removed it cost me around $500 dollars. The doctor charged me $300 for the surgery and the biopsy was a couple hundred. This guy didn't take insurance that is probably why his cost were so low. This place was a basically a med spa. This doctor was removing a tattoo for me and I had him take a look at the open sore on my forehead. I couldn't go back to this place because they have limited hours because of the current situation.
Going even further back in time to 2012 when I went to a dermatologist for the first time to have the 1st open sore on my forehead looked at by a physicians assistant not even the doctor. Before this I had the sore on my forehead for maybe a year? They froze the sore off and charged me $300 said come back in a few months and to wear sunblock. I went back again had it frozen off and was charged $300 once again. The spot went away until 2014 at which time I went to the med spa and had it removed.
During this whole process all I have been told is to wear sunblock and come back for a checkup in X amount of months. To me this is almost more disturbing than the medical bill. I have done my own research and found a supplement called nicotinamide . Which I take every single day and will continue to take for the rest of my life. I was talking to the latest doctor about nicotinamide as he was doing my surgery and he had never heard of it which surprised me. Nicotinamide has actual studies behind it. There are also other things a person can do. That is why I'm posting this I want people to post things they have seen that my help others. Hopefully peer reviewed double blind placebo controlled information not something from a random youtube channel talking about pH levels.
