It wasn't always that way. And every so often someone tries to force everybody in school to say the POA despite Supreme Court rulings to the contrary. Schools are allowed to push it, and yes students can abstain (now), but they feel social pressure to go along.

That said, many Christians feel a "sacred duty" to say the POA as most don't know the socialist history behind it. Opposing that mindset is what I'm pretty sure TC was talking about.

No, I was saying exactly what JMDrake said I was saying, that those of us who are Christians should only pledge our allegience to Jesus Christ and not to any flag or country. I think the pledge of allegience and the reverence for the flag can be seen as a form of idolatry. But I have no idea how you interpreted what I said the way you did.
