Republican presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said Wednesday that he would support rival Donald Trump if he was the GOP nominee, adding "We're a long way away from that."

The remarks are a reversal from his comment in October that Trump as the GOP nominee would be a "disaster" for the party and the country. Paul's most recent comment also came after he was booted to Fox Business Network's undercard debate.

In an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday, Paul said he thought the Republican nominee nedded to be someone who "says we are a welcoming party."
When Paul was asked if he would support Trump as the nominee, he seemed hesitant, but said that he would.

"Yeah, I think it would have to happen," Paul said. "I think we are a long way from deciding who the nominee is. The reason I say I will support the nominee, when I won and beat the establishment, they all came around and supported me. That's the way party politics work. They group around the nominee."

Paul noted that he didn't think Trump would win in Iowa.
"We are a long way away from that," he added.

Not a flip, Rand has said from the beginning he would support the nominee (though, I don't think he should but that's his call).

More spin. He didn't say that Trump wouldn't be a disaster. He signed the pledge and will honor it, regardless. I just hope that if it gets to that point that he'll run as an Independent.

yup...debate 1 in the question was asked, Rand didnt raise his hand and only trump did.

The only thing Rand HAS said regarding it, is he would NOT accept a VP offer.

Rand has always been clear that he would support the nominee, he did in 2012 and the first thing he did in the first debate was call out Trump for not being loyal to the party. Might not be what we want but he hasn't flipped.

the pledge also included not running as a 3rd party....to honor it he'll keep his word on both.

There is 0 chance he runs independent. If he doesn't get the nomination, he is still a sitting GOP Senator up for reelection.

I think it's a strategic error to endorse Trump (his Presidency would be a catastrophe, best to not be associated with it), but I understand why he thinks he might have to.

He chose to work from within the GOP...sometimes you have to lose a battle to effectively fight the war.

Donald would be a disaster but the other democratic bitch would be even worse is what it comes down to.

Right, that's the conventional wisdom, I'm sure that's what Rand's thinking, and 99% of the time I'd agree (I had no objection whatsoever to the Romney endorsement). Trump is a special case, though. If, as I predict, a major opposition movement gets going within the GOP if/when Trump gets elected and starts showing his true colors, it would help Rand to become a leader in that opposition movement if he was unique in having pointedly bucked convention and not endorsed this particular Republican nominee: "I told you so." Again, though, I'm not too upset about it, I get it.

@ OP

6 posts, just joined RPF this month?

Not a good start, grasshopper
We seem to get a lot of those every election. With all these years of practice, we have gotten pretty good at spotting them.

LOL, I guess some people are afraid that they gave Randal a boost with the whole debate exclusion brouhaha; so now they are trying to temper the new found enthusiasm with some bullshit.

good luck burn in hell, you bastards.

He said he would do this right from the get go, he signed the pledge. Essentially he's doing exactly what I expect Donald to not do, namely keep his word. I'm not going to hold it against Rand for endorsing Trump if he's nominated, but I'll sooner throw myself off the Franklin Bridge than cast a ballot for Trump, or Hillary for that matter since that's who he's working for.

To the author of the OP: I'm giving you a pass on negative rep since this is your first offense, but put any garbage like this on here again and you'll be in red territory in no time.

Partisanship > principles.

I'm not really sure what's worse. That he ever agreed to endorse Trump, or that so many of you are apologizing and making excuses for him.

It's a non-issue with most of the Rand supporters.
