The letter says:

We are deeply concerned that the Ukraine aid legislation reported by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee contains "reform" provisions that would unnecessarily double the United States contribution to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), part of the largest proportional increase ever, yet ultimately undermine our influence in that body in a manner that provides no actual relief to Ukraine.

As we understand it, this reform would double the funds the IMF can loan, involving a doubling of the United States’ contribution from its current level of $63 billion, while simultaneously reducing U.S. influence over how these funds are directed—and increasing that of Russia. Regardless of the magnitude of this change, this idea is antithetical to the driving purpose of the underlying legislation.

Most importantly, change at the IMF has no direct relevance to the issue at hand, which is assisting the nation of Ukraine as it tries to rebuild its fragile economy in a way that will enable it to become a partner to the free economies of the U.S. and Europe. The IMF is already perfectly capable of managing the task at hand, as estimates have shown that Ukraine aid would consume no more than 5% of its current resources.

While we are all eager to assist Ukraine on its path to freedom and prosperity, injecting IMF governance issues into this debate—and undermining U.S. influence on the IMF—is not the way to accomplish this end.

Sen. Cruz’s letter was signed by Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyoming, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, and Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kansas.

Everytime I read "Rafael Cruz" it makes me want to punch the screen.

Yes, I know this comment will only encourage certain posters.

I hope that Rand votes against this even if the IMF provision is taken out. It's still going to contain aid regardless and increase the deficit.

I'm pretty sure that is a given; seeing as one of Rand's legislative proposals for dealing with the Ukraine/Crimea situation was to end foreign aid to the Ukraine.

The name he is known by is Ted Cruz. The "Rafael Cruz" name is used in order to create a perception that he is illegitimate or un-American.

Or, to make the point that for political purposes, Rafael realized that his birth name has the perception of being illegitimate or un-American...especially in the Republican electorate, so he changed it to "Ted".

Just as "Bobby" Jindal changed his birth name for the same purpose.

This is the kind of thing that pisses me off. Manufacturing a 'crisis' in the Ukraine by playing into Putin's hands and then using it as a pretext to give more money and autonomy to the most evil, prey-on-the-poor banksters the world has ever seen.

I didn't think I had much use for Cruz, but if he keeps this up I might decide he's not so bad after all. And props to Rand Paul (and Lee, Enzi and Roberts) for standing up when it's difficult, but truly important to do so.

To hell with the IMF. This is the kind of thing we need to scream about until we actually get heard over the noise. The neo nazis be damned. Putin be damned. This we need to nip in the bud.

It is his legal name is it not? I'm going to refer to him as Rafael Cruz from here on out just to piss off up tight cruz fans. speaking of which, I wonder how many cruz supporters have made a big deal about obamas names; referring to him as soetoro and what not...

So you're suggesting Cruz has been planning a run for elected office since college?

Do you call Rand Paul - Randal Paul? That is his legal name. Or Ron Paul - Ronald Paul?

Nope. It's obvious what you guys are doing when you call Ted Cruz - Rafael Cruz. If you want to pretend it is about calling people by their legal name then why not be consistent with it?

He was born in freakin' Canada to a Cuban father... I don't know about un-American but he is not exactly American. Some call Obama: "Barry", and Romney: "Willard". If anyone wants to call Rand: Randal, or Randy that's fine with me. That is his name.

Wouldn't surprise me:
