After a tough vote, a new GOP attitude.

HERSHEY, Penn. — In New Hampshire yesterday, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul told a group of supportive Republican legislators that the country needed some immigration fixes. A few hours later, I asked whether, if elected president, Paul would move to overturn the Obama-era executive orders that have essentially legalized millions of immigrants.

"I’ve always been of the opinion that we should do things the proper way," Paul said. "I am in favor of doing immigration reform, but it should be done in the proper fashion." He cited the the need to tighten border security before attempting anything else, but added that "the 11 million, I think, are never going home, don’t need to be sent home, and I would incorporate them into our society by giving them work visas and making them taxpayers."

I don't know why people hate mexicans so much. For a country that was pretty much founded by immigrants there is too much hypocrisy to consider debating on that front. But personally I know many Mexicans some "legal" others not. They are all very stand up men and women. They work hard and do not complain. Most are not interested in handouts, they only want a better life for their families. Many are more respectable than Americans.

I'd politely ask you, in English, to shut up already about the ones who are here. And focus on the bigger problems. Frankly I don't view immigration to be a problem. It's the govt who makes it a problem.

I think the problem is different depending on your geography. There is a big problem in certain parts of the country. But yes, I would certainly agree with your second statement. If it weren't for the government's welfare state and drug prohibition, most of the "problems" would go away on their own.

Bingo

Agreed. I find most people who are staunchly against immigrants tend to be both ethno-centric (oftentimes downright racist) as well as ignorant about the actual effect of immigrants on labor (I'm so sick of hearing how they will "take our jobs"). I love multiculturalism and having the ability to interact with people from around the world within my own country. Immigration is a very positive thing, imho.

Obviously, crime & and handouts would be the always negative aspects, but I believe it would be hard to prove that these people are any 'worse' than the average American citizen.

This is one issue I just don't discuss with everyday people. I agree with Rand on this topic, but it is not a popular position with red meat Republicans.

Immigration isn't the problem. Coming here illegally IS. Becoming a criminal coming in, is not really a very good start, nor makes you welcome. Good fences make good neighbors.

Same here. I actually posit that one of the major reasons Repub's in general dislike immigrants is because they tend to lean left politically. Pretty unfortunate, but it's true.

I think you are stretching here. Do you really just dislike the fact that they are here because the law says they stayed illegally, or is it more true that you just don't like them and the law supports you. ( I for some reason doubt I am going to get a honest answer here based on your posts. ) Do you pick and choose which laws you like and dislike? What is your stance on federal drug laws? Shouldn't immigration and resident alien issues be more up to the states?

People don't hate Mexicans per se but rather the demanding mob aspect. Dump 10 million Americans into the heart of Mexico and major problems would ensue.

Probably, due to the sheer numbers. You just can't take millions of people with distinct cultural imprints and spontaneously move them into an occupied area. It's like poultry but on a much grander scale. Ever try to introduce a new chicken to an existing flock? It's not pretty.

Yep. I'm an open borders kinda guy anyway. The problem isn't immigrants, or even illegal immigrants. It's minimum wage laws and social safety nets -- for anyone.

I applaud anyone who spits in the face of dumb government policy.

What mob?

Places prone to mobs and congestion of people have mobs of all types of people... What about mobs of black people, poor white people? Rich people?

Why single out the mexicans?

And there is a fairly large population of mexicans here in eastern nc, but I've never had a "mob" issue...

And why is nobody fussing about all the Burmese people that our govt had shipped in?

Yep. They definitely are not low profile. You could argue that the Hispanic lobbies in Congress are some of the strongest in the country. You get the feeling from these political groups that they almost revel in sticking it to the existing citizens, whether it be Obamacare, pre K education and an assortment of other benefits. The whole social justice angle is disgusting.

The validation of rights is one thing but demanding the citizens of a country that you just entered illegally for material assistance is audacious to say the least. It's kind of like inviting a guest into your home and when you return later that night you discover that they are planning to renovate your basement.
