Rand Paul filibusters Patriot Act renewal and yields floor after 10.5 hours - Official thread

Spoiler: A clean reauthorization, which is what McConnell wants, won't pass. He is putting up a show of fighting to keep the dollars flowing from the military industrial complex. However, the Patriot Act will be extended through the USA Freedom Act.

Since the House break is just one week, they could theoretically come up with other alternatives, but it won't be a clean reauthorization.

Anyone got a highlight real or anything for those of us that have been too busy all day to follow it?

Imagine all the things you and many American's thought were absolutely wrong with bulk data collection, no-knock raids, warrant-less searches, lack of due process, agencies requesting built-in backdoor access and general misdeeds. Then hear someone talk about it for 10.5 hours on TV in front of a lot of people.

Great synapsis! I'll add that he talked about civil asset forfeiture and the over the top EPA regulations about wetlands and the crazy court cases and sentences of people that "violated" these absurd regulations. And he somehow managed to relate it back to the issue at hand relating to the NSA and the Patriot Act!

The only person on TV I've heard talk about this tonight is Rachael Maddow.

Of course the majority of the gay left-wing media isn't talking about it. They know this is an issue that will resonate with a lot of the electorate and score Rand extra brownie points.

The most important thing is that it hit the top of Drudge. I'm sure talk radio will hit on it too. If the social conservatives and middle of the country "Tea Party" come out for Rand in the primary he will win.

anyone got a full tally of Senators who showed up to support the effort? I saw Wyden, Manchin, Heinrich, Daines, and Lee... who did I miss?
