Rand Paul Challenges Bernie Sanders To Hour-Long Debate On Socialism vs. Capitalism

I'd think many of Sanders supporters are just confused about politics and social/economic systems (a good many are in college after all), so Bernie would stand to lose many of them when someone offers more than free stuff. Liberty and Capitalism are empowering, and provide many more opportunities than free indoctrination.

Sounds cool but would never happen. I think Rand is just saying it as a fun theoretical thing but even he knows it won't happen.

So I guess Rand is trying to make a play for Bernie's supporters. If Rand did well in this against Bernie, do you think it's possible he could capture a lot more of the youth vote?

I am sure Rand would win many votes based on looks alone. Add the wives into the equation and you have about 25% of his supporters before the debate even starts.

how do we apply pressure to Bernie?

Reddit.

Right now this is the top post on reddit.com/r/politics most of the reason why Bernie Sanders is doing so well is because he has a huge web presence. Also The left is still having trouble convincing Bernie Sanders supporters to support Clinton if she wins the nomination.

this wouldn't be allowed by the DNC or RNC most likely

will have to wait to fall 2016 :p

Bad idea. Every single argument Sanders will make will be based on emotions. Americans don't think critically, they think emotionally.

While most of this is true, Rand could easily win the emotional argument as well as the logical one. Socialism is a heartless system of destruction.

"Senator Paul, why would you rather let this single mom with three kids working 83 hours a day die of brain cancer just because she can't afford health insurance?"

"Senator Paul, why would you rather give the 1% a tax cut instead of paying for working class kids go to college and get their degrees?"

"Senator Paul, why do you want to eliminate funding for wonderful organizations like Planned Parenthood which provide tens of millions of women with the essential healthcare they need to keep their legs open?"

"Senator Paul, why do you want to stop sending foreign aid to Africa? Why do you want children to starve and die of AIDS?"

Rand would handle all of those questions with absolute ease. You don't think he'd ready for such absurdity?

This debate would be a great means for the DNC to finally sink the Sanders ship and rally all democratic voters behind Hillary.

Old nutjob Bernie would get his ass handed to him.

That he'd give fantastic answers I don't doubt. What the American public would hear is something else.

I agree to an extent. Rand often answers questions in a blunt, logical way that sometimes comes off as being harsh. While it is the reality, much of the country are a bunch of whiny biznitches. To cater to the people you're referring to, he needs to find a way to add some emotional attachment to his responses. Rand has done this before when he talks about criminal justice reform and mentions the story of Kalief Browder. If he can find a way to craft answers to various types of questions in the same format, it would resonate better with those people.

Like this would ever happen.

I wouldn't discount it... CNN picked up the story.

http://edition.cnn.com/2015/11/13/politics/rand-paul-bernie-sanders-debate-challenge/

Washington (CNN)Sen. Rand Paul challenged Sen. Bernie Sanders on Thursday to a one-on-one debate on the merits of capitalism versus socialism, describing himself and Sanders as "really the diametric opposites of viewpoints in our country."

"We've been saying what a fun, dramatic, and informative debate it would be if Bernie Sanders and I could have an hour-long debate," said Paul during an interview with Iowa radio station WHO NewsRadio 1040.
"Can you imagine," he continued, "debating over what rights are versus what obligations are, and debating socialism versus capitalism?"
The two presidential candidates represent the ideological extremes of today's Republican and Democratic parties -- Paul, on the Republican side, is an avowed libertarian, while Sanders, running for the Democratic nomination, is a self-described democratic socialist -- and have premised their presidential bids on the need for a shift in their respective parties' philosophies.
Besides staking claims to ideas outside the political mainstream and serving as colleagues in the Senate, however, the two have very little in common.
Paul went on in the interview to criticize Sanders' socialist beliefs, saying, "Bernie says, 'Oh, I believe in a benign form of socialism, democratic socialism.' But here's the problem -- if a majoritarian takes away your rights, it's not any different or less bad than an authoritarian taking away your rights."
Sanders' campaign did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment Thursday night.
Truth In Media reported on a similar challenge in August when interviewing libertarian activist Donald Meinshausen, who told the organization that Paul had said to him he would be willing to debate Sanders "anytime, anyplace."

Some of these responses.... I don't.... What has happened to this place? We all clearly disagree with Sanders on the role of society and the individual. We disagree with him on whether civil liberties are individual, or whether they are granted by society as it changes.

We are very passionate about our beliefs. Sanders is one of the people who really believes what he says though! One of the few willing to say things that he knows will piss people off because he means it.

Why are we talking about him like he's a dementia having old psychopath? I just can't believe the responses. /rant

Uhm because the beliefs he is passionate about involve stealing from others and violating our inherent rights?
Sounds like a psychopath to me.
