In the highly unlikely scenario where Ron manages to just miss the Republican nomination by a hair (it's beginning to look like the tipping point for an escalated Ron Paul surge may be very near and he may win the nomination by a bigger margin than anyone suspects)...

Having said that..

Imagine the potential for Rand jumping into the 2012 fray as the Constitution or Libertarian Party nominee? And selects Ron as his V.P.... I think it would be a three way blood bath with the two elite vetted hacks of the Democrat and Republican parties in the general election.

would this have any advantage over Ron running as 3rd party?

Ah, good question. I was assuming that Ron would run full speed into "sore loser" ballot access barriers. And that these barriers may not exist for VP selections (though I don't know). Rand would be entirely unencumbered by "sore loser laws."

Plus the Rand addition pulls many traditional Republicans from the RINO.

And Rand comes off looking like the hero taking one for Team Conservative rather than the inexperienced brash freshman Senator running for the Republican nomination (speculation a few months back...).

Rand will endorse the eventual GOP nominee, even if it's not Ron. People here will hate that and comdemn him for it, but Rand will have to do that if he wants to have any chance at all at ever winning the GOP Presidential nomination.

I don't think this is necessarily true. Rand could win without party leadership support. In fact, the powers that be will be very disapproving of Rand. He will have to connect with the people, score high poll ratings, and win with the grassroots mostly. It will be a Kentucky-style campaign on a national level.

Rand will not run as a Constitution Party or Libertarian Party candidate.

He might become a hero populist by doing this. And he can easily spin it without pissing off too many rank and file GOP voters. It would really highlight the People's dissatisfaction with the current GOP. It would reinforce that he is a Tea Partier first and underscore his mantra that "both parties are to blame."

I think even a lot of grassroots conservatives don't like a candidate who doesn't have any loyalty at all to the Republican Party. I think it hurts Ron that he won't endorse the eventual GOP nominee. GOP voters don't see Ron as a loyal Republican.

They dislike his voting record more than his lack of willingness to support John McCain or Bush, I would think.

why have him ruin all the work of getting him elected and respected.. do you really want him pigeon-holed the way his father is everytime they bring up the time he ran as a libertarian.. this idea is TERRIBLE.. luckily Rand knows that.

Doubtful. Many mainstream Republicans would consider him a traitor. Think about how the media calling Ron a Libertarian has hurt him with some Republicans. No, if Ron loses and if Rand is smart, he will just keep his mouth shut and not endorse anyone, or he will endorse the Republican candidate. It's not like someone other than the R or D is going to win the election, anyway.
