In Newsweek's most recent publication ("How They See It") they feature an interview with General Petraeus. Talking about Afghanistan, they eventually turn to the topic of negotiations with the Taliban.

Petraeus says, and I quote "There has been a willingness [to reach out]; I gather that Karzai's brother met with Mullah Omar or his close aides in Saudi Arabia."
This is page 58 of the magazine.

I did a double take when I read this. Omar is the leader of the Taliban, at least "officially", and is supposed to be a wanted fugitive with a reward on his head, in hiding. How the hell did he get all the way to Saudi Arabia, if this is true?

If he did, I only see two explanations...

1. The Saudi Monarchy aren't the American puppets they pretend to be, and are in league with America's foes. They offered Omar shelter.
OR
2. The U.S. Command knew about this, and let it happen. They let the leader of the Taliban slip through, perhaps even giving him protection. This would mean our leaders are engaged in treason by Constitutional standards ("aiding and abetting enemies during time of war")

there was a report in the telgraph that the US is working with ex baathists in yemen!

politics = bullshit if you hadn't figured that out I feel sorry for you

I'm begining to take Jesse Venturas opinion on the matter into consideration, that we really don't want to find Osama Bin Laden.

they missed a chance to get zarqawi pre iraq invasion, if you'll recall

Also, stated in one of Paul O'Neil's books, the first on George Bush's to-do list was invading Iraq.

Here's a good one for all of yous..
Back in 1998, Osama Bin Laden warned us that if we were to keep our on-going strong presence in Saudi Arabia, the battle would come to our soil, America's soil. Two years later, we deployed more miltary personnel over to Saudi Arabia, and the official amount before September 11th, 2001 estimated to seven thousand. Were we that foolish? Liberators? Or, instigators? Not to mention, the sanctions we once were imposing on Iraq led to many casualties, and many among children under five years of age. And yes, our aircrafts were being shot at by Iraq militants, but it was only because we were bombing their homeland. What's funny is how we never take a look at our own actions, just the foreigners actions after we commit our ruthless amount of actions.

it's easy to get all vague and say broad statements. I want to know people's thoughts on this specific incident, and what it could mean/tell us about our military/intelligence establishment

Should be pretty obvious.

Let's see, (1)we aid their rise ($$$), (2)they give us an excuse to blow shit up ($$$), (3)soldier$ spend a few years playing cowboys and indians ($$$), (4)we hide the "chief" in exchange for (2).

btw, our government had nothing to do with 9/11.

^were you his personal physician? At his deathbed yourself, were you?

Maybe Petraeus is so caught up in his own image he let his tongue slip

or the "terrorist" organizations in the region are quite resourceful, so they were able to help this guy navigate his way to saudi arabia once he met them at the Afghan border.

with the new, corrupt, and relatively weak governments of Iraq/Afghanistan, which leads to very lax border control, if any, it'd be easy to sneak almost anything in and out, with Iran or Pakistan holding a "blind eye" to the activities.
the Taliban could have used Pushtun help to get their guy to Pakistan's beaches, where they launch off to Saudi Arabia.

if Iran looked the other way, they could have made their way through Iran, then a short boat ride to Saudi Arabia.

there's a million and one explanations i could think of, none of which include US Government conspiracies.

but beware, the governments of Pakistan or Saudi Arabia should NOT be trusted as allies. they, like Israel, use us for their own purposes.
