Poll: Mike Bishop leads Tom McMillin in GOP primary to replace Mike Rogers

LANSING, MI — The first poll in the Eighth Congressional District Republican primary has former Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop with a double-digit lead over State Rep. Tom McMillin.

Bishop leads by 12 points, according to the poll from EPIC-MRA. Of those polled, 45 percent say they support Bishop while 33 percent support McMillin. The remaining 22 percent were undecided or refused to answer.

The automated telephone poll was conducted between July 19 and 20 and 804 likely Republican primary voters were questioned. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent. This is the first public poll released in the race. It did not include the four candidates running in the Democratic primary.

EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn said U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, who is not seeking re-election, has an influence in the race. When those polled were told Bishop is endorsed by Rogers, 7 percent changed their support to Bishop, giving him a 20-point lead.

Both candidates are also liked by the voters polled. Bishop has a favorable rating of 62 percent and McMillin 59 percent.

“It’s not that they dislike McMillin, but they are choosing Bishop,” Porn said. “I think Rogers has a lot to do with that.”

That's unfortunate. Let's hope the liberty-minded folks are more motivated to get to the polls than the NEOCONs in that district.

It's hard to tell. If they elected Bishop for so long, a lot are probably establishment Republicans and NEOCONs. The best bet is to get all of the liberty-minded folks out to vote and make our turnout exceed theirs.

I don't think it really work that way, the seats won by Ron Paul, Justin Amash, and Thomas Massie and Rand Paul. Had more to do with organizing and having funds than anything else. I am pretty sure all those seats were held by Neo Cons at some point. Incumbents always have an advantage, their records are their vulnerabilities, but it is hard to beat them in larger races.

I know I am right, but that is what's so frustrating. We don't have enough funds to win most of these races. McMillan would be leading in the polls if he had raised more than Bishop.

Not really a surprise, given Bishop's backing compared to McMillin's. Liberty folks so love to talk of grassroots fundraising, yet the die hard old guards just laugh them off. As much as people want to play off groups like the Chamber of Commerce, they're the ones that bring in huge dollars.

I know I am right, but that is what's so frustrating. We don't have enough funds to win most of these races. McMillan would be leading in the polls if he had raised more than Bishop.

We have nothing to sell but freedom. Unfortunately, that doesn't get as much funding as the promise to peddle influence. On the Democratic side, they are promising free stuff (and peddling influence).

As much as people like to criticize Rand (and a few things he has done lately have frustrated me), he is one of the best I have seen at branding and packaging freedom in a way that is acceptable to a lot of the public. We need people who can do that.

I think one thing we need to remember is slow and steady wins the race. If we have more people coming over to our side than last year, we have more elected representatives supporting our idea, and we have growing educational and homeschool institutions popping up, then we are on the right path. If we happen to lose a battle, take it as a learning lessing and keep the full-court press on!

There were bad polls against Bentivolio and Amash when they were trying to get elected too IIRC. So I wouldn't get discouraged about this poll. Just make sure you send him some money and don't abandon him. He's a great candidate.

Good question. It sounds like it was a push-poll intended to help Bishop.
