Paul: Justice equals peace in Baltimore

James Pilcher
May 1, 2015

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., a GOP presidential hopeful, said the charges in Baltimore case could bring peace to the city Friday at a Northern Kentucky Chamber event, where he also talked Brent Spence.

FORT MITCHELL – GOP presidential hopeful and U.S. Sen. Rand Paul Friday appeared to welcome the news that six Baltimore city police officers would face criminal charges in the death of a prisoner in custody, even if he didn’t say how he felt about which way the case should go.

“The sooner we get justice, the sooner we will get peace,” Paul said after a lunch meeting with minority and business leaders at the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. He did not indicate whether the officers in question should be convicted or acquitted of any charges, however. The death sparked looting and rioting in Baltimore earlier this week, although Friday, the Maryland state attorney announced she would pursue manslaughter and assault charges against the police officers in question.

Paul also said he regretted a comment he made on a national radio talk show about “not stopping during a riot” earlier in the week. On the nationally syndicated Laura Ingraham show Tuesday, Paul linked the violence to a “lack of fathers,” praised police in general and quipped that his train rode through Baltimore the previous night and that “I’m glad the train didn’t stop.”

“You always regret off-hand comments after you say them because people misinterpret them,” Paul said Friday. ““But people shouldn’t misinterpret my intentions ... I have been one of the few people traveling to our big cities trying to find solutions to poverty there.”

I personally don't think that Rand did anything wrong with this comment as he said what most people outside of Baltimore were thinking, even if they'll never admit it, but from an optics standpoint, this was probably the best thing to do. As Kyle said to Stan when his "Stan Ground" campaign was coming apart, "You really need to Bill Clinton this".

“The sooner we get justice, the sooner we will get peace,” Paul said

That is what I've been saying these past few days! Except when I say it, I get called a liberal for supporting the riots....

I think most on here agree with you're take on a need for justice... Where the digression occurs is that the riots hurt their own community and destroyed private property, which is not cool regardless of their gripe.

You weren't simply saying what Paul said, you were jumping on others for rightly criticizing the stupidity of the rioters. Furthermore, are you actually admitting that you were supporting the riots? Because if so, you were morally and objectively wrong in doing so.

Pssh, I got called a Marxist laden with white guilt for thinking suicide bombers were a reaction to American foreign policy or that rioters were a reaction to American domestic policy.

Short term justice will give short term peace.

Long term peace, needs long term justice.

There's a difference between believing that suicide bombers are a reaction to U.S foreign policy and believing that suicide bombers are morally justified in what they do.

There's a difference between believing that rioting is a reaction to American domestic policy and believing that rioters are morally right in what they do.

Idiom,
You didn't talk about blowback, you outright supported the rioters and criminals. You also do seem to have some sense of guilt and self loathing because you said that if rioters burned your house down and destroyed your property you would "have it coming." You justified the rioting, assaulting, and looting because the business owners pay TAXES for crying out loud. Don't come onto a different thread and try to spin what you wrote else where. You used Marxist reasoning to justify rioting and property destruction. You can play innocent now but what you wrote, and defended vehemently, says otherwise.

Yup, and those of us who see that distinction get called NAZIs by those who don't.

Justice means different things to different people. To some, it might mean all 6 of those cops getting publicly crucified. To others, it might mean, making the race baiters, and facilitators pay reparations to the store owners who have had their property destroyed by rioters who were given "space to destroy" by the mayor.
Im not sure if all 6 of those cops are guilty of a crime, but Im pretty sure that Obama, Al Sharpton, and the Mayor of Baltimore have their own crimes and evils to answer for in this matter.

Masterful statement by Rand.
