Paul / Carson 2016 ? Carson speaks about Rand

I would recommend we avoid bashing Carson as he is actually probably close to Rand on many issues probably more so on foreign policy then most realize. Paul should probably be doing some joint appearances as well as Carson has higher favorables amongst Republicans and Carson has to be a top 10 prospect for VP.

Please stop posting these old videos as if it aired today. This is from Mar 2013, when Carson was new on the political scene. It doesn't mean he will be an ally to Rand, after more than a year now. The politicos and the lobbyists would have had their way with him by now.

I recognize this is an old clip, but we have to understand how to build coalitions. No need to throw potential allies under the bus. We are not competing with them. We are working with them. I'm not sure Carson could handle a VP slot, but he is certainly an asset to us.

Whatever you do when discussion Carson with someone who may support him or like him, do NOT bash him. If Carson develops a following, his camp and our camp could easily join forces. (Unless we behave like we have in the past and piss in their Wheaties because their guy isn't as cool as ours.)
 
How does a social conservative like Carson help Rand in a general election? Rand is already cautiously catering to the religious right for the nomination.

I'd be careful about applying foolish labels. Carson may be socially conservative, but that does not mean he lacks broad-based appeal. He is also economically conservative and constitutionally conservative. (Notice how I use adjectives instead of nouns? It prevents you from throwing individuals into buckets.)

How does this economic and constitutional conservative gentleman bring additional votes to Rand Paul in the general election?

You say he has "broad appeal" but I gather what you really meant to say is "appeal to conservatives."

I really doubt Rand, who we must keep in mind has only been in office since 2011, will pick a man with zero political experience. Carson is a nobody, essentially created by Foxnews. He is famous for talking at an Obama breakfast, come on guys...

But he is probably better than any of the likely VP choices, but better might as well be worse in politics:( I don't like his views on the Constitution though, an we don't have a clear picture of what he really thinks on most issues.

Like I said, I don't think he is ready for a VP slot, but Carson is the real deal. He is not Herman Cain redux. It is true that he advocates a moral life, but I think that misses the point.

I've read two of his books (I also watched the Cuba Gooding Jr. movie) and I understand where he is coming from. I think many of us would like his take on personal responsibility and personal liberty.

As for his gun control comments, I think he fell victim to having a philosophical discussion on TV. It's happened to Ron and Rand, too, in different ways. As for his appeal, he has a calm demeanor with a compelling life story. It cuts across the political spectrum.


But regardless of any of that. Why would you want to ostracize his supporters? That is just dumb. If he runs and drops out, I'd like his supporters to feel welcome in this camp.

he's not a gun advocate, and supports the drug war...

but he has a nice voice, and speaks well just like someone else we know...

It may be going a bit too far to say he supports the drug war. But his answer to Greta Van Susteren about legalization in Colorado came off as naive, which is very surprising since the man is obviously exceptionally bright.
 
I'm not sure Dr. Carson is ready for prime time, and I plan to keep bashing him on gun control until he comes around. So far I do think that there's still hope for him though.

If he doesn't support legalization/de-criminalization, he supports the drug war. There is no gray area.
