Two former Republican legislators from Mike Huckabee 's home state are in Iowa this week criticizing Huckabee's record on immigration and taxes on trips paid for by Ron Paul, Huckabee's Republican presidential rival.

Paul's campaign said Thursday it was paying former Sen. Jim Holt and former Rep. Randy Minton about $5,000 each to go to Iowa for a series of radio interviews criticizing Huckabee's 10 1/2 years as governor.

Reading the AP article Paul Brings Huckabee Critics to Iowa, it's pretty clear that those ARK guys aren't going to be speaking on behalf of RP.

I have a feeling these guys are the surprise that the Iowa RP Chairman was talking about when he said they had a big surprise coming up.

Here's my read on the situation, RP is a very straight-shooter, not likely to go negative, but he wants the truth out there. But Huck & Romney split the religious and socially conservative vote. But Romney is going down in Iowa. Huck has stabilized. Would RP's staff "set the Huck story straight" with Iowans if RP's Iowa staff thought Huck was a 1st place lock?

No, it's a waste of resources, if you can't unseat Huck from 1st in Iowa don't bother, because RP needs Huck to whip Romney's ass in Iowa to make Mitt completely finished by the time he gets to NH.

Thus, there's something big afoot in Iowa alright. RP is going for Gold in Iowa and the RP campaign is convinced that that can and will happen, if they just make a few adjustments. This also suggest that they might have some polling done on Huck & Iowan voters. I bet that data tells Huck is paper thin and about to fall apart there.

[Of course, if the other candidates go negative on RP what do they have? He's TOO close to the Constitution? He's TOO much for financial health? He's TOO honest?]

The way to frame this is to point out that Huckabee was a failure as Arkansas governor and now he's "failing up".

W "failed up" his whole life, and we made him President and look what that got us.

Paul has made a pullout of troops the centerpiece of his campaign.

Mmm, I think the media did that.

But, this is good news. Paul's on the offensive. He's not going after Giuliani. I guess he didn't see him as much of a threat. :D

They got nothing that will stick to Ron Paul the Teflon Don!

He's too clean, really.. their attempts at character assasination would be viewed badly because they would have to stretch so far with lies..

They will attack his constitutional stance.. make it seem bad and too harsh or something, that's all they got on him..

The Constitution!!

and they will try to demoralize it as much as possible when we make it to the end..

They'll probably just try to attack us, the supporters, which would be like the usual ad hominem but an even bigger fallacy. Say, what's Latin for "to/against the supporters?"

Good find! I saw a segment on the evening news the other night about a republican from Arkansas going to Iowa to campaign against the Huckster. Ron Paul's name wasn't mentioned, but perhaps that was on purpose. :)

Best money ever spent!!! Finally the campaign gets on the offensive. I know people were getting anxious, but the timing was all planned. They didn't want RP to peak too early. I think we will see RP raise in polls dramatically over next couple of weeks. These guys are seasoned.

It makes the media call Paul a 'player' in Iowa which is a good thing.

This helps Paul's campaign frame Iowa as a 3 way race between Romney, Huckabee, and Paul. This raises his profile in the national media, which will help in name recognition in later states.
