Orlando GOP refuses Ron Paul supporters

Funny! To me, that founding fathers argument sounds exactly like the one the left uses trying disarm us.

I will not sell out any portion of freedom of speech.

They wouldn't have to because they never would of allowed it to get to this point.

The constitution doesn't forbid states and local governments from infringing on speech - this is a byproduct of the 14th amendment which also stripped religion out of schools and town squares.

Hmm, I'm a member of that meetup group and couldn't make it to that meeting because of work. Looks like i missed some interesting times.

It’s not just Orlando…

A group of Ron Paul supporters began attending the St. Johns County REC monthly Meetings last summer. We were passionate about supporting Dr. Paul – but always remained courteous & professional. It became pretty obvious that most of the REC leadership was not very interested in our involvement.

As we attended more and more meetings (as guests) we began asking about gaining membership. At first we were told we must attend three meetings - then we were told 3 consecutive meetings (we had missed one) – then we were told that we had to first be invited by an existing member. So then we began looking for members “sympathetic to our cause” who would “invite us” to the meetings. Now I have been informed that the REC is closed to guests & new members until July 2008 at which time they will entertain new applications.

I have sent repeated e-mails to the entire REC leadership team politely asking for the official REC rules on membership and for a list of open Precinct Leader Positions. I explained that I know of many young enthusiastic Republicans who want to become involved in the party and are willing to serve as Precinct Leaders. They continue to ignore me. I’m pretty sure they are reading my messages because I pointed out that the County GOP Website stated the following:

“The Republican Executive Committee represents St. Johns County on behalf of the Republican Party of Florida. The meetings are open to all interested Republicans. The Republican Executive Committee is not a social club. Its monthly meetings are primarily for the purpose of conducting official Republican Party business”

THE NEXT DAY IT CHANGED TO:

The Republican Executive Committee represents St. Johns County on behalf of the Republican Party of Florida. The Republican Executive Committee is not a social club. Its monthly meeting are primarily for the purpose of conducting official Republican Party business.

Possible Options:

1. Wait until July and try again…

2. Pursue formal complaints with the Republican Party of Florida…

3. Contact the local media and let them know that the local Republican Party is discriminating against certain Republicans – then show up in force at the meeting and let them physically stop us from attending…

Thoughts/Advice?

This seems to be the question of the day. Perhaps leadership at the national level has passed down this plan to exclude us in this way. If that has happened and 'traditional' republicans are going to continue to be excluded from these meetings nation wide, then we need to come up with a plan as a group on what our next move will be.

JSPat4, make sure you get a cached page of that website before they changed it.

I'd probably pursue formal complaints at this point; I even wonder if there is standing to take them to court for not following their own rules. Combine this with a media blitz as well.

I think it's time for option 3. I don't see giving in or trying to convince a corrupt leadership to change, I think you'll have more luck taking it to the public.

Hey guys, I'm the organizer of the Orlando Meetup. Please don't call Lew Oliver the County Chairman. That post was meant to only circulate to the Orlando Ron Paul people. We are on top of the situation and appreciate your support. But phoning is not needed.

I googled up Lew Oliver to learn about him and I found this article in the Orlando Sentinel. It looks like he is just another party hack. He has been accused of being a loan shark.

In a normal election year, the Republican Party chairmen of Orange and Seminole counties would be working together to elect a slate of Republican candidates.

This year, though, Orange's Lew Oliver and Seminole's Jim Stelling are at war in court, fighting over an $8 million land deal that has fallen apart.

One of Stelling's companies bought a 70-acre Oviedo plant nursery in 2006, intending to develop a housing subdivision.

Oliver served as Stelling's lawyer and helped put together the deal. He also formed a partnership with other investors and lent Stelling's company $1.7 million, the down payment plus closing costs, according to court and land records.

Stelling later discovered that the property was so tainted with arsenic that it could not be developed.

In November, Oliver's company sued Stelling and his development company in circuit court in Orlando, demanding repayment of the $1.7 million.

The case turned ugly last month. That's when Stelling and his company, Metro Orlando Development Group LLC, filed court papers accusing Oliver and his partners of being loan sharks. The loan by TG&O Holdings LLC, was illegal, according to those pleadings, because it charges more than 100 percent interest.

That same paperwork accuses Oliver's law firm, Granet and Oliver PLLC -- the one that handled the land purchase -- of being sloppy. It failed to dig up information about how much arsenic was in the soil, according to those pleadings.

Those allegations are false, Oliver said, but because he's the lawyer who helped put together the deal, he can't talk about it. If he did, he'd be disclosing attorney-client secrets, he said.

"It's very awkward," Oliver said.

The important thing, he said, is that he has done nothing wrong.

Stelling would not discuss the dispute.

Despite the allegations, both men say they can work together for the GOP.

"I would say that we're good friends," Oliver said.

Said Stelling, "Lew is a dear friend."

Able to work together?

At a GOP gathering in Palatka three weeks ago, Oliver voted to send Stelling as a delegate to the GOP National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul in September.

"I take for granted that my duties and obligations for the party, as well as Jim's, will be unaffected," Oliver said.

Is it a good thing to have two county chairmen engaged in an ugly court fight, one accusing the other of unethical and illegal business practices?

"If I were a Republican inSeminole County or Orange County, I'd be a little worried that the county chairs wouldn't be able to play nice and work together," said Aubrey Jewett, associate professor of political science at the University of Central Florida.

But they may be able to, he said. Much of the work done by county chairmen is within the counties they serve, he said.

State Sen. Lee Constantine, R- Altamonte Springs, represents a district that includes both Orange and Seminole counties.

"It's not unique for county party chairmen to dislike one another," he said. "Inside the political parties and the political-party structure, there's a great deal of infighting."

Still, he predicted Stelling and Oliver, longtime political veterans, would work hard to support GOP nominees.

Who knew what, when?

The 70 acres at the center of the dispute, formerly Gateway Gardens Nursery on Oklahoma Street in Oviedo, is vacant. Stelling's company had planned to transform it into Hammock Reserve, 240 single-family homes and town homes.

In June, Stelling's company sued the seller, Charles H. Cox of Winter Park, accusing him of keeping secret how serious the arsenic problem was.

Cox would not comment, but in paperwork filed by his attorney he alleges he provided Stelling's company with plenty of details, including a chart that makes clear arsenic levels exceeded state standards and that Stelling's company would need to clean it up.

Last week, Stelling's company gave up that legal fight. Its attorney, Damon Chase, said the two sides had settled but would not discuss their terms. Neither would Stelling.

Still pending, though, is Cox's counterclaim. He had lent Stelling's company $6.5 million -- everything but the down payment -- to finance the land purchase, according to county land records. In court pleadings, Cox alleged that Stelling's company was in default.

Cox has asked a judge to sell the land at a public auction at theSeminole County Courthouse. He also has asked that Stelling's company pay his $48,000 in attorney fees.

Stelling's partner in Metro Orlando Development is hisSeminole County GOP protg Chris Dorworth, 31, of Heathrow. Dorworth was elected to the Florida House in a special election Nov. 6.

The very next day, Oliver's holding company filed suit, alleging that Metro Orlando was in default of the $1.7 million loan. The suit names Metro Orlando as well as Stelling and Dorworth. The two men and their wives personally guaranteed the loan, according to court records.

Dorworth would not answer questions about the dispute. But by e-mail, he said he looks "forward to the day we are vindicated in court."

I have contacted the Orlando Sentinel in hopes of them doing an article about this situation.

Make the membership blockage a media story. Make them "famous."

The media and activist groups like stories that are analogous to "voter suppression."

Emphasize how the suppressors are harming the GOP's image and hence electability.

I am not fighting for porn. I am fighting for the right of the people to publish anything they so choose. The ultimate goal here is supposed to be freedom and liberty.

For those Ron Paul Republicans who want to work from within to change the Republican Party, but who can't--for reasons of principle, or for reasons of resentment for the way that John McCain treated Dr. Paul--bring themselves to vote for John McCain, Bob Barr could provide a nice alternative. Many of his views can be tied to what the Republican Party claims to believe in. He and Ron Paul appear to have some mutual respect for one another. And a vote for Bob Barr (quietly, if you're trying to work within the Republican Party), would not seem totally hypocritical (although a vote for Mike Gravel might). It all comes down--in my view--to where one stands on the libertarian spectrum. For those who tend to be more conservative (economic) libertarians, Bob Barr makes a lot of sense--as does/did Ron Paul. For those who tend to be more leftist libertarians (with less emphasis on economic issues), he may not be quite such a good fit.

Look, no local executive committees is going to roll over and play dead for us. Even if you somehow managed to win a seat on your local party's executive committee at a party meeting, your term will only last until November 4, 2008. It is far, far better to save yourself the headache and win a four-year term of office by concentrating now on actually winning your own seat at the ballot box. Qualifying will be in July, but check with your local Election Board. Don't be deceived, all executive committee seats will be open.

I would hope the Ron Paul campaign would help in organizing those who qualified for their local executive committee elections. A few dollars for a few signs and a name list of all Ron Paul supporters in your jurisdiction would go a long way in helping you win your election. But don't count on it. Go out and make your own signs. You will probably only need four or five signs.

The name list would be very helpful. Organization over the Internet is where the present GOP leadership will be vulnerable and where we would have the advantage. And don't hide your message. Shout it out. Run proud. But most important of all, have fun.

The Republican Party in Florida is devoured by John MCCain - I can't find ONE SINGLE PERSON who claims to have voted for him and yet he WON in the primaries? I wonder how much McCain sent to Deibold to rig the machines?

I get email from the RPOF and this morning I sent this replay to one of the emails I recieved...

I too SUPPORT the Florida Borders Act 2008 http://www.free-press-release.com/news/200803/1204678183.html

Of Course, this is contrary to John McCain's history of SUPPORT for Illegal Immigration and the amnesty bill that he has sponsored... http://www.newswithviews.com/Taft/john29.htm
