online debate is becoming impossible

I tell you. I am used to being ridiculed and insulted on forums. There has never been a time I can recall when there were too many places I could go and disagree with someone and be answered in a way resembling the way someone would in real life respond. Especially during the Iraq war, I was grateful to not get banned. I've been banned TONS of times, and never for insulting someone or using harsh language.

Lately it seems to have gotten worse. It's like, the people are insulted you are even there commenting on their article. I've taken the time to write a response and then had it deleted. One guy actually changed my response and put something stupid in it's place.

This board is different for me but that's because I am a libertarian and there are so many things we agree on even in the different areas. We're all generally small govt etc.

I LIKE debating stuff. I think most other people don't.

I know some people use swearing and stuff to make a point and that arguments can get heated but...it's just words on a page on the friggin internet!! we aren't world leaders at a summit. I WANT to debate with socialists and neo cons and democrats. I want their views to challenge my perception of reality.

I've realized something lately, there's a difference between defending your position/belief, and proving something to be true.

There's a youtube with Mark Dice trying to convince people to sign his petition to repeal the first amendment to curtail hate speech against the President. It's chalk full of some great humor.

I know your pain. Keep up the fight, it's a war of ideas for sure. It seems there's a preliminary war first, which is getting people to ACTUALLY THINK.

True, but to convince people that an activism idea is a good idea there will always be some debate on the subjects.

As long as the debate is amicable, it can help further the mission of moving forward with good objectives. Otherwise, we might end up on some bush doctrine of "Staying the course" regardless of differing opinions.

Sure there will be. It's just not the primary focus of the forums. I don't think some people understand that.

It's my opinion that discouraging debate does not encourage activism.

Encouraging activism encourages activism -- organize and energetically promote a great idea, and activists will jump on board.

I was just talking about this the other day, it can be fun, challenging and eye opening to debate civilly but it does seem that most just want to scream back and forth like children as if only the loudest and most obnoxious can win. This forum isn't so bad because we actually want to learn and teach, not just scream our biases at each other...tis why I don't venture much from here.
