Oklahoma bill would put an end to marriage licenses
Oklahoma state Rep. Todd Russ, R-Cordell, has filed a bill that would put an end to marriage licenses in the state. Under his plan, a religious official would sign a couple’s marriage certificate, which would then be filed with the court clerk.

Failed 43-71, I picked up 42 votes from the Democrat Caucus.

The NC "Christian Right" vehemently opposed my plan, one man even threatening to have me "lined up against a wall and shot."

My floor argument was that they were harming the very cause they were trying to protect, and that we would have state sanctioned gay marriage in NC earlier than had we simply left it alone. My prediction has turned out to be 100% true.

95% of my opposition when I ran for NCGOP Vice Chair was on account of my position on the Marriage Amendment. My position that 1) turns out to be 100% true, and 2) is now the only viable option left for protecting traditional marriage.

Under his plan, a religious official would sign a couple’s marriage certificate, which would then be filed with the clerk. Marriages would no longer be performed by judges. If a couple did not have a religious official to preside over their wedding, they could file an affidavit of common law marriage.

“Marriages are not supposed to be a government thing anyway,” he said Wednesday.

Government would still be involved.
